3 Sports Ministry Happenings The year 2006 was a busy one for sports ministry. We will strive to make 2007 an even more eventful year. We are currently in the throes of volleyball. The fall 2006 season is winding down and the winter 2007 season is ready to get under way. Any one interested in joining up for volleyball can either sign up on the sports ministry board or contact Clint Kelly or Randy Nye. Cost is $20.00 for league fees and you must be at least 18 years old or have graduated high school. Besides volleyball, 2007 saw Highline participate in basketball, soccer, and softball leagues. Special events included night time golfing, hiking and a bowling tournament. Unfortunately, the ping pong tournament was frozen out. The bowling tournament was a successful event for friends and family to gather for fun and a little friendly competition. The results for the tournament are as follows: Women s scratch game: Donna Schaller 182 Men s scratch game: Bryan Allen 233 Women s handicap game: Pam Heaven -230, (scratch was 144) Men s handicap game: Chris Terry 235 (scratch was 135) Men s scratch series: Clint Kelly 571 Women s scratch series: Barb Bennett 437 Men s lowest game: Mike Stampalia 68 Women s lowest game: Karen Berg 81 All winners received gift cards to Star Bucks. A big thank you goes to Becky Stampalia for organizing the tournament, figuring out the handicap scores and getting the prizes. The ping pong tournament will be rescheduled for February 10, This will give everyone time to mark their calendars and hone their skills. If people are interested in some casual ping pong, we (Continued from previous column) now have a couple of tables available at the church to use. I will have a sign up sheet on the sports ministry board for those interested. If enough people show interest, perhaps we can have regular get togethers for more fun and fellowship. Highline sports ministry is always looking for more ways to get members of the church involved. We currently need people to head up soccer teams and basketball teams. (There are leagues available if enough people show interest.) If you have other sports or events you would like to see us make available, please contact Clint Kelly or Bill Gross. Our phone numbers are in the church directory or use our mailboxes in the mail room or feel free to contact us directly. May your New Year be God Blessed. Your Sports Ministers Clint Kelly and Bill Gross Video Study Continues Starting January 7, 2007 all adults are invited to join us as we continue our study That The World May Know. 1/7 Jerusalem (and the Temple) 1/14 Jerusalem (and its History) 1/21 Mount of Olives (Lamb of God) 1/28 Capernaum/Gethsemane (Weight of the World) Please contact Chris Check if you have any questions. 3

5 BUILDING UP... REACHING OUT What s Happening with the New Building? In the Worship Center: Sheet rocking is nearly done! The interior doors are ready to be delivered as soon as the sheet rocking is completely done. The new chairs are expected to be ordered this week. In the Education Wing: The 2 nd floor walls are done and we re planning to install the roof trusses this week. Praises: We only lost one small tree in the wind storm and had no other damage. Night Watchers. Continued thanks to those who have volunteered to stay overnight at the church building. We ve had no thefts or vandalism in the five months we ve been doing this. Safety. We ve had no significant injuries or accidents. Prayer Requests: Upcoming interior design decisions (especially Atrium & bathroom tile). One two three My Aunt Ola was in her nineties and physically frail. She, who had helped others her entire life, became dependent on others for basically everything. Everything, that is, but prayer. Believe me, she and God were close. After her death, her daughter, my cousin Gwen, told me about being near her mother s room one day and hearing her praying out loud. She was having a very personal conversation with God. Part of it went something like this: God, you know that I have loved you all my life. I ve tried to do whatever you needed done. Now I m ready for you to take me home. I would like for you to take me now. Ready, Lord, one... two... three. God did not take her at that moment. Perhaps God knew that the dear saint who had taught countless others how to live, might also teach others how to die assuredly, faithfully, eagerly, joyfully as though the best of life was yet to come. Her hope to join all the saints in heaven reminded me of St. Paul s writing to the Philippians saying that his desire was to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better (Philippians 1:23, NRSV). Charles Ferrell The old family Bible A little boy opened the big family Bible. He was fascinated as he fingered through the old pages. Suddenly, something fell out of the Bible. He picked up the object and looked at it. What he held in his hand was an old leaf that had been pressed in between the pages. Mama, look what I found! the boy called out. What have you got there, dear? asked his mother. The young boy answered in a voice hushed with awe, I think it s Adam s underwear. 5

6 SUMMIT SEEKERS 2007 meetings start up January 7th at 6:00 p.m. Hope you have John 1:1-5, memorized. Bring your Bibles and I ll see you there! Chill Out! Winter Overnighter January 14th 4th 6th graders Get your permission form today Winter Retreat February 16th 19th TRAIL TREKKERS 2007 meetings start January 4th at 6:30 p.m. Remember to bring your Bibles, and Memory Verse Cards. Hope you have been working on memorizing 1 Timothy 4:10b. We have put our hope in the living God, who is the Savior of all men, and especially of those who believe. THANK YOU We had so many of you volunteer to help with the Living Nativity this year that it was overwhelming and I want to say Thank You to all of you. With your help we were able to have a great return of the nativity and reached some people with the true meaning of Christmas. What a wonderful gift to Burien. I ve heard of stories from different people about the how the Living Nativity has touched their lives. One family shared they are at Highline because of the nativity of the past and their daughter was able to be in the nativity this year and it was so exciting for them. Another story is from a family in the Tacoma area who traveled here by invitation to see the Christmas story acted out. The mother and her two daughters stayed for two and a half shows and talked about it to this day. Do you have a story of how the Living Nativity has touched your life or the life of others? Be sure to share your story with someone else to share what God is doing through this ministry at Highline. Again, thank you to everyone who signed up to help this year. You are a special blessing.
