S C O T T S V I L L E U N I T E D M E T H O D I S T C H U R C H The Scottsville Spirit April 2017 A Word from the Pastor Remember Jesus Christ, who was raised from the dead.... This is the Good News I preach. --2 Timothy 2:8 Because I live, you also shall live. --John 14:19 Pictures with the Easter Bunny. Baskets of chocolate. Brightly colored eggs. An obligatory hour in church. Dinner with the aunts, uncles and cousins. A few days off from school. Jellybeans. Daffodils and lilies. And, this plastic, grass-like stuff that seems to show up all over the house for the next several weeks. For most families, some or all of these are included in the celebration of Easter. Even non-church families find themselves caught up on the festivities and the joy. For Christians, Easter is not just a holiday, it is a Holy Day. Let me state the obvious: Easter is the day we celebrate God s greatest activity since creation the resurrection of the Christ bringing salvation and eternal life to all who believe in Him. A choir director s instruction many years ago rings in my mind this time every year. He reminded us, Your words are singing, And did He rise but your hearts are shouting, DID HE EV- ER! This Easter, as you are finishing your taxes and preparing for dinner, listen to your heart shout, Christ is risen! Christ is risen, indeed! Know that this is a celebration that begins now and lasts through all eternity. 3 Set your calendars now for our next Adult Fellowship Retreat Weekend - October 6-8. The crew enjoys dinner together in Somers Point Friday night, followed by Serendipity. Saturday includes games of all kinds, and a family style dinner. A Fall block party is also scheduled on Asbury Avenue between 9am and 4pm, and fireworks will be set off over the ocean that night. Sunday morning we share a very special worship hour together, have lunch, and straighten up the house before departing for home. Newcomers are encouraged! 3

The UMW held their annual Fellowship Breakfast on February 25. More than 25 ladies were in attendance. Breakfast was delicious. A great BIG thank you goes out to the cooks. This get-together happens every year about this time, so plan on joining this special group next year Secret Sisters were revealed. Wednesday, April 5, 9:00am - Ladies of Scottsville, on the first Wednesday of each month we meet for breakfast at Michael s Restaurant on Street Road in Bensalem. You are encouraged to join us. Wednesday, April 19, 7:00pm - The UMW will gather for their monthly meeting in the Adult Lounge. All women are invited to attend the book review of, Giving Our Hearts Away. Enjoy a night of fellowship and light refreshments. Saturday, April 22, 8:30am - Noon - This year the Conference UMW Ingathering will be held at Janes Memorial UMC (41-59 E. Haines St. in Philadelphia). There is a bin in Fellowship Hall for LUMINA, a mission project in the Lancaster area. This is an after school project where children are taught to cook without spending a lot of money. Collection items include: rice, beans, cans of tomatoes, cooking utensils, bowls, Pyrex, and pot holders. This is an ongoing mission project for the UMW. Thank you for your donations. Thank you for all your positive feedback on new musical arrangements presented by the choir over the past several weeks. We are certainly enjoying the new challenges. We as a choir are humbled by the responsibility we have been given in worship. Our role, through song, is to create an atmosphere of worship... be it praise, prayer or commitment. While your expressions of gratitude are appreciated, your experience in worship is more important to us. Sometimes responding with a solemn silence or a quiet "Amen" would be the most appropriate affirmation that our message is being received. We are currently working on our Easter Cantata entitled, Because He Lives...Amen! We will be having two Sunday rehearsals immediately following morning worship. Sunday, March 26th and Sunday, April 2nd. Our regular Tuesday rehearsals will continue. Thank you again for all your support and encouragement. Keep Singing! Patsy Keller 4

SCOTTSVILLE UNITED METHODIST WOMEN S FAMILY DINNER TO HONOR MOTHERS Saturday, May 6, 2017 at 5:00 p.m. Scottsville Family, The month of May will be here before you know it, and so will Mother s Day. This year we are hosting our family dinner honoring Mothers on Saturday, May 6 th at 5:00 p.m. This dinner is open to the entire family. Everyone is invited! If you have come to our church on any given Friday night throughout the year, you might have noticed that our parking lot is full. That is because our church hosts several groups who need the support of their group. For this reason, we do not want them to cancel their meetings by having our dinner on a Friday night. Instead, we decided that we could have it on a Saturday night and enjoy an earlier dinner. This also makes it easier on the cook. Our dinner menu this year is: Bacon wrapped Stuffed Chicken Breast with Bacon Potatoes (gluten free) Scalloped Potatoes Green Beans Salad, Bread Individual Apple Pie (not gluten free) Ice Cream (gluten free) Coffee, Tea, Iced Tea, Milk The cost for dinner and entertainment is only $13 for adults, $7 for children, and free to children ages three and under. At the time of this letter we are still working on a program for the night, but we wanted to get this information out to you because of the change of date and time. Hope to see you there. Don t hesitate to call with any questions (215) His Servant, Georgeanne Toner, UMW President 5

EAST DISTRICT UNITED METHODIST WOMEN DAY APART AND INGATHERING APRIL 22, 2017 Church Family, It is that time of year again when the East District of the United Methodist Women hold their Day Apart and Ingathering. This year it will be held on April 22, 2017 at Janes Memorial United Methodist Church in Philadelphia. For those of you who are not familiar with what this is, let me explain. For several weeks prior to Day Apart and Ingathering, church congregations collect new items of clothing for Women, Children, Youth, and Men as well as diapers, Depends, and any special requests received from the selected agencies receiving the items. The day begins with a Walk for Mission where the attendees who want to, get pledges for their walk, and the money raised goes directly to the East District United Methodist Women s Pledge to Mission. As churches are arriving, they are bringing the clothing their respective church has collected and boxed up for tallying. Of course, being United Methodists, there has to be food involved. The host church always has a wonderful Continental Breakfast spread to start the day. After the walk, the Day Apart portion of the day is a spiritual retreat with worship, invited speakers and leaders, and fellowship. We will be collecting items until April 16, 2017, Easter Sunday. As I have said in the past, prior to going out and buying items, check your closets. If you ve had items hanging with tags still on them for a long time, and you think you will never where it, donate it. We are collecting all sizes for both genders. While out shopping, check the sale racks, it doesn t matter if it is winter, summer, fall, clothing... anything is helpful. In the past few years, our Scottsville family has collected over 2,500 items. Last year our congregation donated the most with 875 items. Your United Methodist Women s unit would like to thank their church family for their giving of these items. His Servant, Georgeanne Toner, UMW President 6

Red Cross Blood Drive Saturday, April 22 8:00 AM - 1:00 PM Did you know that one blood donation helps 3 people? Can you give of your time to touch someone with your help at our Spring Blood Drive? You can help in two ways: Donate - Schedule an appointment to donate online at the Red Cross website: You can search for our blood drive by zip code (19053) and date. OR use the sign-up sheet that will be posted in the Narthex starting Sunday, April 9. Help with Registration or in the Canteen - Greet others from the church and community by helping donors register as they arrive. Or meet the donors after their donation as you distribute drinks and snacks. A sign-up sheet will be posted in the narthex starting Sunday, April 9. In the past year, we have helped 186 people with blood donated at our Blood Drives! Help us continue our success. I look forward to seeing you! Helen Robinson Scottsville celebrates with a pancake breakfast when Daylight Savings Time begins in the spring, and when it ends in the fall. This is made possible under the direction of Jeff Smith. As usual, breakfast was delicious. IHOP has nothing on us! Special thanks to everyone involved. All proceeds will support the various ministries offered at Scottsville. Thank you Ruth Irwin and the Fellowship Team for hosting the Game Night on March 11. Kids of all ages had a great time. Scottsville holds a food drive every year during the months of February and March. The donated non-perishable food items are distributed to food pantries throughout Bucks County. There are so many people in our community that are in need of these necessities for nourishment of the body and soul. By donating, you not only help feed those less fortunate, but you also let them know that someone out there cares. Thank you for your generosity, for time spent collecting, sorting, and delivering. Kudos to Jeff Smith for organizing the food drive. The Neshaminy Valley Music Theatre is pleased to announce one of the best loved American musical comedies of all time, Hello Dolly. Show dates are March 31 and April 1, 2, 7, 8. The performances will take place at the Neshaminy High School, Theodore Kloos Theater (2001 Old Lincoln Hwy. in Langhorne). Please see Joy Crosbie for tickets (215) Adults $20, Seniors $18, 18 years of age and younger, $10. 7

Service (Missions) News April s Mission offering will support Native American Ministries. Your Service (Mission) Team would like to share with you a little information about this month s special offering to Native American Ministries. Native American people fall at the bottom of the economic ladder in the U.S. with many reservation areas considered the poorest parts of our nation. This mission provides college scholarships for United Methodist Native American seminarians. The primary goal of this project is the development of leadership skills for Native American United Methodists. Long term impact will be an increase in the number of these people taking on leadership responsibilities and having a positive impact within their local church. Pull out your box of donation envelopes. Inside you ll find mission offering envelopes, one per month. The only way your donation will actually be applied to the monthly mission offering, is by using this envelope. Our Joyful Noise is a second collection each Sunday. Usually kids come behind the adults with bread tins to collect your loose change and bills that go to a specified mission/service project. This month, your donations will support Scottsville s Vacation Bible School. Each summer our devoted congregation offers a one week Vacation Bible School (VBS) for the kids of our community. In order to offer this great program free of charge, the leaders depend on your generosity through the April Joyful Noise offering. This collection will take place each Sunday in April. 100% of this offering will go directly to our VBS program. You have five Sundays to be generous towards this extremely important program that reaches directly out to our community. A Woman s Place is helping women and families not only escape dangerous situations, but they also help these families set up new homes. They have asked if we would be willing to help by donating full size items in addition to our long time trial-size toiletry collection. We would like to collect tissues, small (not kichen size) waste can bags, air fresheners and small laundry baskets. You can place your donations at our Mission Possible service collection site in Fellowship Hall. Happy Birthday!
