Sunday, June 24th Outdoor worship service at 10:00 Midsommar activities start at 11:00 There are many ways that you can help: Food preparation in the weeks before (cookies, fruit soup, ost kaka, lefse), food runners, sound system, games, greeters, servers, food setup, and kitchen and outside cleanup after the celebration. If you are interested in helping, please contact Sandy Hanson or Maja-Lina Lundell. The family of Delma Berg would like to invite everyone to join them in celebrating Delma s 90 th birthday after church on Sunday, June 3 rd. Cake and a light meal will be served. Everyone is invited to stay to wish Delma a belated Happy Birthday!

2 From the Pastors... Pentecost Sunday was a day to celebrate the movement of the Holy Spirit out into the world! On that day, Jesus sent the disciples out with his gift of the Holy Spirit to share the Gospel. Since that day, the followers of Jesus have been spreading the good news all across the globe. Here at Spring Garden, we do talk a lot about our connection to the wider world because we know that God is active everywhere! And when we lay our eyes on what God is doing in different parts of the world, even as we see what God is doing near to us our faith can t help but be inspired! We actively celebrate our connections to the Lutheran Church of Guatemala in part because we have four young people who were born there. But we connect because we have a unique Lutheran faith connection and well trained medical people who have answered a particular call to help in the Health Promoter s Ministry of ILAG. I ve begun to include in our prayers in worship the Christian community in Cambodia in part because Chuill was born and baptized there and I once had the chance to preach in worship at the Jesus Life Church in Phnom Penh, where Chuill attended. Since then, the Lutheran Church has become active in Cambodia, working to grow congregations and work with an organization called Life With Dignity, which supports people working with agriculture. And not only that, the ELCA s ministry efforts are led by a young woman by the name of Stephanie Olson. We met Stephanie s parents, who have Cannon Falls roots, at a funeral last spring. In the coming months, when Stephanie comes for a home visit, we are hoping she can join us for a day to learn about the Lutheran Church s work in Cambodia. Small world, huh? And finally, we include in our prayers our friends at Kiomboi and the Central Diocese of Tanzania, even as we share regular offering with our medical missionaries, Steve and Bethany Freiberg. When we were re-engaging that partnership about 20 years ago, I remember one of our Swedish Singer women (Betty, Lucille, Idella, Marjorie or Ruby I can t remember which one) told me how back in the s, the Augustana Ladies Aid Society had supported missionaries in Tanzania. They said: Of course we should support our work in Tanzania we helped start it so we should stick with it! Well! We were thankful for their strong witness in building on this partnership in the Gospel, for Pentecost s sake! Sometimes, we get to see the fruits of our prayers and our partnerships. On Sunday June 3, we welcome Tanzanian Pastors Deborah Lyanga and Emmanuel Kaghondi for worship! Emmanuel is studying for his Ph.D in Music Education at the U of M. Deborah is here in our synod to connect with congregations. I met Deborah when she was a seminary student at Kiomboi about 15 years ago. Since then, she has worked in congregations and more widely for the national church with women s issues. It is as if they come as missionaries to us from a church in Tanzania that is growing rapidly and about 7 million members strong. The church is alive everywhere and Pentecost faith is growing followers of Christ around the globe. I am thankful that from our perch in Southeastern Minnesota, we get to be a part of Making Christ Known! See you in worship! Pastor Nick

3 How fast the time flies by...another Sunday School year has come to an end. We ended on May 20th with the Sundae Funday. The kids gathered with Pastor Cindy and sang songs and then gathered at the tables and played board games and enjoyed their ice cream sundaes. *Thank you to the Sunday School teachers (Julie, Matt, Al, Josh, Katie, Maja, Kim and Sue)...What a great bunch of people they are to work with! *Thank you to the Cross Trainers. This group is a positive role model to the younger kids. Thank you for always being willing to lend an extra hand to the younger kiddos! *Thank you to the Confirmation guides who attended Confirmation on Wednesday evenings with the youth. *Congratulations to Parker Berg and Abby Collins as they graduate from High School this year. *Congratulations to Abby Collins, the recipient of the High School Scholarship. Abby will be pursuing a career in Nursing. *VBS dates are June 5th, 6th, and 7th at Spring Garden Church from 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm. Sign-up sheets were handed out during the May 20th service. If you did not get one and still would like to bring your kids please by all means bring them. There are more sheets available in the church office, or the sheets can be ed to you. The theme this year is "God s Good Garden" and will involve lots of outdoor time with the kids getting their hands in the dirt. *Please consider getting involved with the Christian Ed Board. These kiddos at Spring Garden are truly awesome! I started new to them last fall and to be quite honest...i was as little nervous. I filled in as a Sunday School Sub over the year and have involved myself in as much as I can with them and I really have enjoyed getting to know them. I would like to personally say "THANK YOU SO MUCH" to Kim Sjoquist! She remained very active in teaching us newbies with Christian Ed throughout the year. It's a lot of fun, rewarding work that we couldn't have done without her! Becky Haugen Family Fare receipts for April were a total of $13,532.00! As a reminder to members, once an amount of $150, in receipts is reached, Family Fare will give $1, in return to help support activities at the Cannon Valley Senior Center. Thank you to everyone for all the support throughout the year for our Youth! Being able to give our youth the opportunities through our 3 year cycle of summer trips are an invaluable experience.

7 Well I've been bothered by ringing in my ears and wondered what caused this annoying symptom so thought I'd do a little research and share it with you all. Tinnitus or ringing in the ears can be caused by many things. It is not a disease but a symptom of another health problem. Usually ringing in the ears or tinnitus is from damage to the tiny hairs in your inner ear that changes the signals they send to your brain that control how you hear sound. You might get tinnitus as a normal part of aging, but other causes may be loud noises which is the leading cause which may be from concerts, sports events, loud machinery etc.; too much ear wax buildup; medications such as aspirin, diuretics, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, certain antibiotics, antidepressants, cancer drugs etc.; ear or sinus infection; high blood pressure; and TMJ (temporomandibular joint) which shares some nerves and ligaments with the middle ear. Treatments: There isn't a drug you can take for tinnitus because it is a symptom and not a disease. Your doctor will work with you to diagnose the underlying problem. If it s drug induced they may tell you to stop taking the medication or change it. Don't stop taking a medication without consulting your provider first. If it s high blood pressure your provider will work with you to treat it. Also, will treat the underlying cause for sinus or ear infection and your provider will remove excess ear wax buildup. Depending on the problem tinnitus may be permanent or temporary. To avoid tinnitus, avoid loud noises by using ear plugs or ear muffs. Interestingly lack of sleep can cause ringing in the ears so try to get 8 hours of quality sleep. May was stroke awareness month. Remember FAST which stands for Face, Arm, Speech and Time. Note if part of the face doesn't move or there is no or very limited movement in an arm or hand or the speech is slurred..time is of the essence so call 911. Also pay attention to sudden dizziness, spacing out suddenly, blurry vision or double vision or changes in perception or processing again call 911. Dear Spring Garden Church and Scholarship Committee, I would like to thank you for awarding me with the senior scholarship. I am enrolled at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa this fall to major in nursing. This scholarship is helping me to pursue my goals and dreams at Luther. I feel very blessed to be part of a church family like Spring Garden that has great people, wonderful youth leaders and two amazing Pastors that are all like family to me.
