1 GNS 320/BTH 395- History of Revivals: Spiritual Renewals From The Early Church To The Present 3 Credit Hours Rob Parkman, MA Mini Semester/Nov. 4-8, 2013 I. Course Description Through the centuries, the Holy Spirit has brought necessary awakening and renewal to the bride of Christ that it may more accurately reflect the glory of Christ. This course is an exploration into historical revivals with a special emphasis on their pre-conditions, characteristics and legacies. Students will be inspired and motivated to seek personal and corporate renewal in their generation. II. Course Objectives A. Primary Student Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Prayerfully consider the role God has for them in seeking personal and corporate renewal. 2. Identify authentic revivals and their nature based on a survey of historical renewals. 3. Gain the ability to inform others in the body of Christ of the nature of authentic renewal. B. Learning Objectives In order to achieve the stated outcomes, students should be able to: Cognitive (Knowledge) 1. Identify the major historical revivals, including their unique characteristics and their key proponents. 2. Develop a biblical theology of renewals. Affective (Values) 1. Develop an appreciation for the diverse ways the Spirit of God has worked in the history of the church. 2. Value the special work of God by which he awakens His people.

2 3. Experience steps towards personal renewal. Aptitude (Skills/Application) 1. Develop a knowledge base to become a constructive resource to others who seek an authentic move of God. 2. Gain presentation skills. 3. Develop an understanding of the biblical and historical conditions that the Spirit of God has responded to His people in renewals to thus position themselves and others for renewal. III. Relationship to Eston College s mission, goals, and objectives This course prepares students for life and ministry in the same vein as those who ministered in complete dependence on the Spirit in the history of the church. IV. Integrative Nature This course integrates biblical exegesis, historical analysis, and practical ministry skills formation. V. Course Evaluation A. Assignments Please note that because the course is being offered in a one week intensive, the student will need to take a disciplined and structured approach to their studies. 1. In-Class Participation Because of the nature of the course and the breadth of the subject material, students are expected to challenge themselves by fully participating in class discussions and exercises that will help the students to prayerfully consider the ramifications of truths discovered for their lives. 10% 2. Pre-Course Book Reading and Synopsis- The Ten Greatest Revivals Ever by E. Towns The student will read The Ten Greatest Revivals Ever and (using Towns material) will prepare a 5-7 minute oral summary/report of one of the ten revivals covered. Due: Monday, November 4, % 2

3 3. In-Class Revivalist Presentation The student will prepare a minute report on a revivalist (and their movement) of their choice. Suggestions for a revivalist to report on include, but are not limited to: Johann Arndt William Law T. Post Class Readings in Revival The student will read 300 pages from revival works in the bibliography or from professor approved revival books and submit a list of the pages read from each work to robparkman@live.ca. 3

Post-Class Revival Timeline The student will research and develop a revival timeline that includes the following information about as many revivals/renewals as can be discovered: date, location/region, key proponent(s), and key characteristics/summary. The following format will be used: Date Name Location/Region Proponent(s) 1905 Azusa St. Los Angeles, CA W. Seymour; C. Parham This revival was preceded by the Welsh revival and was marked by: ecstatic worship, speaking in tongues, miracles and inter-racial gatherings. It gave birth to the Pentecostal movement that spread across the globe. Grades will be base on the number of revivals cited and the accuracy on information included. Class Attendance and Participation A. Classroom attendance is mandatory in order to meet requirements for academic credit and is crucial to the successful completion of this course. Absence will impact a student s ability to complete assignments successfully. The material covered in these classes will be essential for completing required assignments. B. The classroom is intended to facilitate learning through active participation. Students are encouraged to contribute to the process by interacting with lectures, discussions and reading material. Please feel free to bring relevant questions or comments. 4

5 VII. Academic Policy / Assignment Guidelines All assignments must be completed according to the Eston College Format Guidelines. Part of grading will be based on using this format. All papers should be the assigned length, with longer papers requiring prior approval from the instructor. Please use 12-point type, Times New Roman font. While content is the most critical factor in determining the grade you receive for your work, to receive a high mark papers must be properly formatted and relatively free of grammatical errors. Paper copies must be submitted or postmarked by the due date. Mailed assignments must be clearly identified with Assignments Enclosed on the envelope. Electronic assignment submissions will be accepted as MS Word attachments but must comply with regular Eston College formatting requirements please to the instructor, robparkman@live.ca Assignments must be received before 5pm on the due date.
