1 Spring 2018 C205: Ministry of Worship COURSE INSTRUCTOR Dr. Ken Puls has served 3 churches over the past 33 years leading music in worship. He teaches music at Florida Southwestern State College in Fort Myers, Florida and directs the online Founders Study Center. studycenter@founders.org COURSE MEETING PLACE: This course meets at Grace Baptist Church, 1300 Ceitus Terrace, Cape Coral, Florida, It is offered in partnership with the Grace Theological Center and will be live-streamed via the Founders Study Center. COURSE DESCRIPTION This course is a study of Christian worship from its biblical roots, through its development and expression through church history, to contemporary styles and practices. Emphasis will also be given to principles of planning, leading and evaluating worship. STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES The course is designed to prepare students to serve and lead God s people in worship to the glory of God, to the edification of the church, and to the spread of the gospel in world. To that end each student will become familiar with: 1) The biblical foundations of worship in the Old and New Testaments 2) The historical and theological significance of worship 3) The planning and implementation of worship 4) The strengths and weaknesses of contemporary styles of worship 5) Principles of leading worship 6) Evaluating and choosing music for worship 7) Nurturing and training musicians in the church 1

2 REQUIREMENTS READING (20% of course grade) These texts are required reading to be completed by assigned dates during course: Christ-Centered Worship by Bryan Chapell (Grand Rapids, MI: Baker Academic, 2009) Exploring the Worship Spectrum: 6 Views edited by Paul Engle and Paul Basden (Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan, 2004) Rhythms of Grace: How the Church s Worship Tells the Story of Gospel by Mike Cosper (Wheaton, IL: Crossway, 2013) Three Priorities for a Strong Local Church by Ray Ortlund (Dallas: Word Publishing, 1983) See Bibliography for recommended reading. WRITING (40% of course grade) The four writing assignments for this course are listed below and must be double-spaced, 12pt New Times Roman font, with a title page: a) BIBLE STUDY NOTES (5% each: total of 10%) Each student will complete two (2) Bible Study Notes Worksheets (to be distributed in class). The first worksheet will contain questions over passages in the Old Testament that relate to music and worship (due October 7th). The second worksheet will contain questions over passages in the New Testament (due October 21st). b) WORSHIP SERVICE PROJECTS (10% each: total of 20%) Each student will design and prepare an order of worship for a two (2) worship services. Both are two part assignments: For Part One the student will print the order of worship just as it would appear in a service folder or bulletin. Include: song titles, titles and composers of choral music (if a choir is used), titles and composers of instrumental music used, names of service leaders (e.g. pastor, music minister, accompanist, etc.), the sermon text (list as a Scripture Reading), the sermon title, instructions for the congregation (if needed), church name, and date of the service. For Part Two the student will write a 2 3 page annotation of the worship service and explain the rationale for the order of worship. The first worship service will be a service for a non-seasonal Sunday based on the Isaiah 6 Model (due November 18th). The second worship service will be a seasonal service: Palm Sunday, Good Friday, Easter Sunday, Thanksgiving, or an Advent Service (due December 12th). c) WORSHIP SERVICE OBSERVATION (10%) Each student will observe one worship service of a denomination other than Baptist. The student will complete an observation form (to be distributed in class). This form and a copy of the bulletin/order of worship is due by the last day of class, May 7, NOTEBOOK (10% of course grade) Each student is expected to maintain a neat and orderly notebook containing the following: 1) The course syllabus / class schedule 2) Course Assignments, 3) Class lecture and discussion notes 4) Notes on required reading 5) Materials distributed in class 6) Any other relevant materials acquired during the course. 2

3 The notebook must contain an organized system of locating materials. Tabs and a table of contents are required. Notebooks will be checked periodically throughout the semester. CLASSROOM PARTICIPATION (30% of course grade) Students are expected to come to each class having read the assigned readings and prepared to take part in discussion. Textbooks and Bible should be brought to class. The course will include at least 24 hours of classroom instruction. The student is expected to spend a minimum of 2 hours per week completing work outside of class for every 1 credit hour of this class. The requirements (i.e., reading, writing, evangelism, etc.) of this class are planned according to this expectation. GRADING A = B = C = D = F = 0-69 (1) The student is expected to spend no less than 2 hours of out-of-class work per credit hour in this class. (2) This syllabus is meant to accurately reflect all expectations and assignments for this course. However, the professor reserves the right to adjust the syllabus at his discretion. (3) Cheating or plagiarism of any kind will result in an immediate failing grade on the assignment with no chance for resubmission. The professor does have the option either to allow the student to remain in and complete the course or to dismiss the student from the course completely. 3
