1 1 SPIRITUAL FORMATION PM7300 Fall Steve Wilkes, DMiss, PhD Dr. Steve Wilkes Office Home swilkes@mabts.edu OVERVIEW OF THE COURSE This is a practical course designed to aid the student in understanding the spiritual character development required for an effective spiritual ministry. Emphasis is given to the development of spiritual vitality through Bible study, prayer, and devotional reading with an emphasis on the Spirit-filled life. Students enrolled in this course will be expected to participate in on-line activity and to complete the assignments on the scheduled dates. Because there is no single textbook for the course, tests will be over all materials covered in the on-line material and in the books. I will do some review before the exams. I will be putting interviews I do with Christians who know how to walk with God and other materials on-line for you to watch, listen to, or read. You may want to alert me about some audio or video material that I should consider for this class. Any speaker or material I put on-line is apt to be on exams. COURSE OBJECTIVES Although considerations will be given to intellectual and academic understanding of the spiritual life of a believer, primary consideration will be given to the actual spiritual development and growth of each student. Thus, the objectives of this course will be as follows: Cognitive You will understand how a Christian grows in his faith and stays in fellowship with God. The place of the Bible and of other spiritual literature will be considered. Skills--you will demonstrate your attempt to grow in grace through the daily keeping of a spiritual journal. Affective In this course you will be motivated to continue your devotional habits for a lifetime. Hopefully, whether you continue to keep a devotional diary or not, you will keep up the devotional habit. Also, you will be motivated to live your life under the influence and filling of the Holy Spirit.
2 2 Reflective You will consider the purpose and meaning of the Spirit-filled life and of the devotional life as presented on line. Not only will you consider these areas for your life, you should also consider how you can pass them on to other Christians. EXAMINATIONS A mid-term exam will be given on March. 26 th. The final exam will be according to the published schedule, and it will not be comprehensive. Some review will be given, but it will be very general. BOOK REVIEWS Each student will be required to read and report on five (5) books. The reviews should be typed on the review forms provided for you on-line. First, read James Dobson s wonderful book Straight Talk. Second, read Jack Taylor s The Key to Triumphant Living. This book had a lot to do with Southern Baptists being open to the filling of the Spirit. Third, you will read Richard Foster s Celebration of Discipline. This book is considered the classic volume on spiritual disciplines. Fourth, you will read my book Spiritual Problems of Committed Christians. The book consists of 10 subjects which dramatically affect most committed Christians. The last book is up to you. Read what your heart desires. Please read from the bibliography. You will also read (at least three times) and review Bill Bright s tract Have You Made the Wonderful Discovery of the Spirit-Filled Life? Simply type a one-page review discussing the strengths and weaknesses of the tract and tell why you like or dislike Bright s tract. It is available in our bookstore, from Campus Crusade for Christ, or from other Christian bookstores. If a review is late, you will lose one full point from your final grade. DEVOTIONAL DIARY Each student is to maintain a daily devotional diary (7 days per week) for the duration of the course. This diary can be in a regular notebook or on your computer. The diary should contain the following type of entries (all 5 are not required every day): v Bible passage read (required) v Insights gained from God s Word (required) v Prayer concerns (required) v Answers to prayer v Record of God s Actions in your daily life. Record any special ideas you had during your quiet time let this be a Spiritual Journal.
3 The devotional diary is for your eyes only. I will require you to show me some dates at your discretion. You will receive no credit for a day s quiet time if you do not write in your journal. 3 COURSE SCHEDULE Jan. 30 Feb. 5 Feb. 13 Feb. 27 March 4 April 1 April 16 May 13 Dobson s book (review) Bright s tract (review) Taylor s book (review) Foster s Book (review) Mid-Term Exam Wilkes Book (review) Your choice of any on bibliography (review) Report on number of days missed of devotions and journaling WORK LOAD I am aware that you have time limitations. I am designing the course to take about the same number of hours as an on-campus course would take for the average student. GRADING This course will be graded as follows: 20% Mid-Term Exam 20% Final Exam 25% Book Reviews 25% Devotional Diary 10% Class Participation (Late work = 1point missed, ETC.) The following scale will be used to assign a grade for your devotional diary work (possibility of 25 points). The numbers refer to number of days you did not have a quiet time and make an entry in your diary. It is my desire that you develop a heart for a daily time with God points points points points points points points points
