1 TRES DIAS OF SOUTHEAST TENNESSEE January/February 2014 TDSETN COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER PESCADORE S PRAISE Chairman s Corner The main complaint, and one that is valid, is I don t get to serve on weekends. This could mean that you have never served a weekend or you haven t served in a long time. For the past year the Secretariat has been working on ways to solve this problem. Please know that we want everyone who wants to serve to be able to, but with a community the size of TDSETN, it just impossible. Here are some solutions and they really keep you plugged in as well as serving on weekend teams. TDSETN is now the sponsoring community for both TDSETN con Dios and Foothills TD. Although Foothills is based in Calhoun, Georgia, both communities will hold their weekends at the ARC and need all the help they can get from TDSETN members. For the first time in Tres Dias history, both of these communities are being sponsored under an Emerging Community Agreement. This is an agreement between the emerging community, the sponsoring community and the Tres Dias International. It spells out what the responsibility of each entity is and holds us all accountable to see to it that the emerging community becomes a viable community. Ecclesiastes 4:12b says, A cord of three strands is not quickly broken. Both communities will have signup sheets at our next Secuela. You do not have to speak Spanish to serve on a con Dios weekend, only a heart to serve your Latino sisters and brothers. Bryan Cook is the Chairman of con Dios and could use a few members of TDSETN on their Secretariat. Let Bryan know if you are willing to serve (bcook@legacyss.com). Steve Meyer is the Chairman of Foothills and would like several of our members to serve on their Secretariat (smmeyer1@bellsouth.net). Please contact these men and let them know you are ready, willing and able. Please pray for these communities. Palanca and candidates are always a big issue with startup communities. Let s show our love. Con Dios has weekends in April and October and Foothills has a weekend in August of this year. If you have a Latino friend/couple or a friend/couple in the Calhoun area, think about sponsoring. At our March Secretariat meeting we will be voting for the Chairman Elect, the Pre-weekend couple and the Weekend couple. If you have someone you want to nominate or you want to serve in one of these positions, please me and let me know (jpat47@hotmail.com). The Chairman Elect is a new position. We have had Vice-Chairman before but now the Chairman Elect will automatically become the Chairman for a two year term at the end of the current Chairman s term. You are important to this community and the work God has us doing. Thank you for considering what you will do to help keep it all in motion. Pat Williams, TDSETN Chairman Rector s Review Weekend #47 I was very humbled to serve as the Rector for Men's Weekend #47. Our our theme song was "Worn" by Tenth Ave North. We all experience times in our life where this is true whether mentally, physically, or spiritually. However, Colossians 1:13-14 reminds us that Redemption Wins As usual, The Father showed up and showed off in the lives of the candidates and team. I appreciate all the prayers and support the community provided to help make this a "Red Letter" experience for so many of us. Chris Doan It was such an honor to serve as Rector for Womenʼs Weekend #47, with the theme Trust in the Lord, and the Scriptures Prov. 3:5-6, and Isaiah 42:16. Our theme song was I Will Follow by Chris Tomlin. Through Godʼs faithfulness these ladies lives were changed forever. Thank you for the prayers of the community, which were vital to the weekend. Trusting in Him, Sue Justice

PRAYER REQUESTS You can submit prayer requests on our website at THE JOYS OF SPONSORSHIP Sponsor a Couple for Weekend #48 In early January, spon sors started receiving phone calls from PreWeekend Couple De ron & Lesley Austin to confirm the ir candidate can attend Tres Dias of Southeast Tennessee Weekend #48. Wouldn t it be great if the week end included a couple that you sp onsored? What a blessing that would be to both you and them This is your opportunity to make a difference in the lives of other Ch ristians in your circles. The Tres Dias applica tion can be downloaded from the Tres Dias website. Please comp lete the form, enclose the $10 per candidate application fee and mail. We will call you to confirm av ailability, and you and the candidate a letter. It s that simple. Partial scholarships are als o available if needed. If you have any questions, please contact Pre-W eekend Couple Deron & Lesle y Austin at Who Should I Sponsor? Tres Dias is designed for those who desire to be strengthened in their faith and to be brought closer to Christ in their discipleship. All believers are welcome to attend provided they are sponsored by someone who has attended a Tres Dias, Emmaus, or Cursillo-type weekend. Candidates should not be in the middle of or just coming out of a traumatic, lifechanging event (divorce, passing of a close family member, dire health issue, prison, etc.). And lastly, candidates must be demonstrating a lifestyle commensurate with biblical teaching. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Pre-Weekend Couple Deron & Lesley Austin at One of the greatest joys of being in the Tres Dias community is sponsorship. My husband and I are honored to have sponsored 9 candidates thus far, and are always in prayer about who will be next Of course we want to share this amazing gift with everyone, but are sensitive to the Holy Spirit as to who we consider. Sponsorship offers a connection that is unlike any other, in that you share something so special and meaningful it will always be something you treasure. Above even this, you get to witness the life and love that being a part of Tres Dias offers, growing in their lives as they understand grace in a fresh, new way. Sponsorship is a gift to not only the candidate, but to their family, church and community. Prayerfully consider who Jesus is placing on your heart to sponsor. What a life-changing gift De Colores Chas Barnes #35 Christway Church

3 MEET YOUR SECRETARIAT FOOD COUPLE Name: David & Karen Smith Weekend: 19 Church: Christ Church Presbyterian City: Ringgold, GA Family: 4 children: Nicole, Courtney, Landry & Taylor Occupation: David: Chiropractor at North Georgia Chiropractic Karen: Teacher at Bright School Hobbies: David: Gardening and Arkansas Razorbacks Karen: Reading, Music Food Couple Duties: Manage the menus on the weekend and keep track of the food at the camp. Tips for Obtaining Palanca Letters for your Candidate One of the primary responsibilities of the sponsor leading up to the weekend is the solicitation and collection of palanca letters. This can be a challenging and somewhat daunting task, especially if you do not know the candidate s family or other close friends. Here are some approaches that have worked well for other sponsors: Start the process of soliciting palanca letters 3-4 weeks from the weekend. Identify family members and list all the friends that know your candidate well. These could be friends from church, neighbors, work, childhood or other places the candidate has lived or attended school. Visit the candidate s Facebook page for additional names. If your candidate is a married man, first call his wife. Explain privately that it is traditional for the husband to receive a loving letter from his wife and letters of appreciation from children, special friends and family members. Ask the wife for the names and phone numbers for 1-2 significant family members and 1-2 close friends. Next, call these 3-4 close family members and friends. Explain that your candidate will be attending a spiritual retreat known as Tres Dias of Southeast Tennessee in just a few weeks. This experience will be an incredible time of learning on how to become a more active disciple of Christ. One very impactful surprise during the weekend is the opening of letters from family and friends. These letters should explain how much they care and appreciate them, which serves as encouragement with their Christian walk. During the discussion, gain a commitment from the 3-4 close family members and friends to write a letter. Be sure to provide a deadline. Secondly, ask for names and phone numbers of other family and friends that your candidate would like to receive letters from. Obtaining letters from old friends or family members close to the candidate from their youth is especially impactful. Then, start contacting the additional family members and friends. Use several methods of communication including an initial phone call, and then reminders sent via text message, , Facebook message, voice mails, etc. Everyone is busy so you must make this letter a priority in the eyes of the candidate s friend or family member. Again, be sure to provide a deadline. As the sponsor, you also need to write a letter. It is very important that all candidate receive palanca letters from their sponsor. If you have questions or concerns, or would like an template for obtaining palanca letters, please contact Pre-Weekend Couple Deron & Lesley Austin at CONTINUE TO PRAY FOR THE UPCOMING WEEKENDS, RECTORS, TEAM MEMBERS AND CANDIDATES CALENDAR What Tres Dias means to them: Tres Dias shows us Jesus bottom line. Whether it is on the weekends served or within the community itself. We see Jesus and His marvelous Grace throughout the entire Tres Marking & Delivering Candidate Palanca Letters to the ARC Mark the letters with your candidate s first and last name in the center. In the upper left corner write husband, wife, son, daughter, family member, friend or sponsor. Deliver the letters to the Palanca box at Send-Off, but no later than Saturday night. The weekend Palanca team will contact you if there are missing letters for your candidate. As you remember from your weekend, the letter bags on Sunday are an extremely important part of closing the weekend. Please make every effort to supply letters in a timely fashion. 4 Palanca Parties Most of the palanca we make is scripture-based and coordinated with a weekend or meal theme. We are particularly fond of sending cake balls and cheese straws for table palanca, toothpaste and toothbrushes for bed palanca, character cards like Rhett Butler or Danny Zuko for themed meals, and Chick palanca with meaningful and inspirational messages attached. Palanca-making sessions are some of our favorite times together ~Judy Hays Reunion Groups CCIA CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY IN ACTION With recent temperatures at fourteen, five, and even one degree, many of us bundled up under warm blankets, hoodies and wool socks. But for some in our area those things are a luxury that they could not afford. Thankfully, the Christian community stepped into action. One Facebook call to help, brought the delivery of blankets, sweatshirts, and hand warmers to Cadence Coffee in downtown Chattanooga. The night of coldest temperatures, our family sought out homeless camps throughout the city to offer a little warmth and hope. We were met with hugs and thanks from people in need, our youngest daughter said, watching them smile is my favorite. That s what happens when the Christian Community steps into Sister Chicks: Kim Woodard, Leslie Lingerfelt, Annette Mullis, Judy Hays, Christy Roberts, Lesley Austin, Keri McBride and Traci Cook SECUELA WHEN: Saturday, March 15, 2014 WHERE: APISON RETREAT CENTER 5:15 p.m. - the Mixer in the Rollo Room This is for the candidates of weekends #46, 47, $48 to have a time of reunion. 6:00 p.m. Dinner begins for the TDSETN Community Please bring a covered dish to share. 6:45 p.m. Praise and Worship in the ARC Auditorium action. To everyone who helped, on their behalf, we say thank you. Shannon & Kristi Greer #18 DONT FORGET PALANCA FOR WEEKEND #48 Bed Palanca in Dorm - 36 items Table Palanca in Rollo Room - 7 containers ATTENTION ALL PREVIOUS RECTORS: Please come and join us for a special evening of REUNION There will be no childcare available. Kitchen Palanca items Palanca can be delivered at Send-Off I am incredibly grateful for many people who are in my life solely because of Tres Dias. Some have become my dearest friends and some have been like a wise older sister. I truly treasure these relationships which offer so much encouragement and love as I continue down my sometimes bumpy, sometimes smooth fourth day road. My 4th day has been incredible The grace that I experienced at Tres Dias has truly impacted the way I view the world. I feel that I see people through a different lens and am able to do so because of the healing that took place at Tres Dias. I am looking forward to the future and am hoping that I am able to bring someone else to their 4th day. ~Jennifer Parris #30 City Church ~ Ben Salicco #47 Ethos Chattanooga

5 Tribute to Rudy Gibson #24 The Tres Dias community lost a gentle giant of a man this month. Rudy Gibson was a quiet leader and definitely a tireless and enthusiastic servant. His respect and love for others touched more than his family and church, but countless members of our Tres Dias community. I first met Rudy on TDSETN weekend #25. I was his dorm cha and got to know him fairly well throughout the team meetings and definitely during the weekend. I was blessed to serve with him on subsequent teams over the years. Rudy always served with an openness and dedication and love for his fellow team members and Rectors because deep down inside, Rudy was serving his Lord and Savior, Jesus. His commitment to God and to God s plan was the driving force behind Rudy s ability to touch so many people for God. I ll miss his contagious smile. I ll miss hear him telling me that I was crazy for liking the cold temperatures. (He never let me live down the fact that I set the thermostat in the dorm to 68 degrees. He said I was trying to freeze everyone in the room.) I ll miss his laugh and his stories about softball and the kids at church. I ll miss seeing the pride in his eyes as he would talk about his own children. I ll miss seeing how he would light up when he spoke of his precious wife, Marty. I think we ll all miss his t-shirt collection. Some of them were absolutely priceless and only Rudy could pull them off. Rudy was and is still my friend. When I called him to be my Head Storeroom for weekend #44, he wanted to make sure I knew that his health may limit his ability to serve. More importantly, though, he wanted to make sure I didn t mind him wearing his t-shirts. I had no problem with any of those things. Rudy was an important part of team #44. That weekend wouldn t have been the same without him. The theme for weekend #44 was, Don t Stop Now Finish the Race, taken from Hebrews 12: 1 2 which reads: And let us run with endurance the race that God has set before us. We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, on whom our faith depends from start to finish. Rudy didn t stop he ran with endurance he finished his race. We ll see him again. I can t wait to see what t-shirt he will be wearing when we meet again. De Colores, Jamie Craven
