PRAYING IN SUMMER TABLE PRAYER With the sun, moon and stars, with the deep sea, hills and trees, with all the creeping things and flying birds, we give you praise, O Lord our creator. We offer you thanks for the gifts of this table, signs of your love and mercy. We bless you for your Son, who is our life, health and salvation, our food and drink, now and forever. Amen PRAYER Prayers for others and ourselves The Lord s Prayer God Most High, by your Word you created a wondrous universe, and through your Sprit you breathed into it the breath of life. Accept creation s hymn of praise from our lips, and let the praise that is sung in heaven resound in the heart of every creature on earth, to your glory, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen. Lord God, You have called your servants to ventures of which we cannot see the ending, by paths as yet untrodden, through perils unknown. Give us faith to go out with good courage, not knowing where we go, but only that your hand is leading us and your love supporting us; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
BLESSING FOR TRAVELERS Use this prayer before leaving on a journey O God, our beginning and our end, you kept Abraham and Sarah in safety throughout the days of their pilgrimage, you led the children of Israel through the midst of the sea, and by a star you led the Magi to the infant Jesus. Protect and guide us now as we set out to travel. Make our ways safe and our homecomings joyful, and bring us at last to our heavenly home, where you dwell in glory with our Lord Jesus Christ and the life-giving Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen From: Welcome Home Scripture, Prayers, and Blessings For the Household Augsberg Fortress, Minneapolis ******************************************************************** Men s Breakfast Saturday June 4, from 9:00-11:00 a.m. Men you are invited - come and join us for Breakfast on June 4 th. 8 Parishioners of the Month The Ostereicher Family Richard and Liz Ostereicher, Adam and Emma, started coming to Mount Olive in The children went to Sunday School and were confirmed here. Richard was born and grew up in Vancouver. His parents had immigrated to Canada in the early 1950 s, his father from Yugoslavia, and his mother from Poland, both of German descent. They met at the Alpen Club in Vancouver and later were married. Though his father was Catholic, his mother was Lutheran, and Richard was baptized and confirmed at Martin Luther Church in Vancouver. He attended Sexsmith Elementary School and Churchill High School, graduating in After first year of Science at University of British Columbia, he decided to switch to Commerce and graduated with a major in Accounting. He was able to live at home while attending university. After graduation, he took a year off to travel with two friends. They went across Canada to the east, then down to the southeast corner of U.S.A. and then west to California, and back to B.C. It was quite an education learning about issues in other communities. In 1980, Richard worked for Ernst and Whinney Co., one of the top Chartered Accountant firms in Canada at the time. He started in the department of audit, moved to small business division. In 1982, he earned his Chartered Accountant status and became senior accountant, a supervisor to the manager. In 1986, he began to work for Zer- 0-loc Enterprises in Richmond and stayed there for twenty-four years.
Liz was an Anderson of Scottish ancestry on her father s side. Her mother was born in Manitoba to a French Catholic family, St. Hilaire. Liz was also born in Vancouver. At age five, the family went to Scotland for three months to visit her grandmother. After that, her father took a job in Zimbabwe, then Rhodesia, for one year. Liz did her grade one there. Then the family came back to B.C. and lived in Port Moody, then Port Coquitlam, and finally Surrey, where Liz attended Dr. Sinclair Elementary School in Grade four. Then the family moved to Chilliwack until Liz finished her grade eleven. She graduated from Princess Margaret Secondary School in Surrey. After graduation, she moved to Toronto, Ontario where she worked in accounting offices, first for a corrugated box company called Container Corporation of Canada, and then for Freud Westmore Tools Co. in Rexsdale, Ontario. After two years, she moved to Halifax, N. S. and worked as an accounting clerk for Harris and Roome Electrical Co. In 1990, she returned to B.C. and got a job with head office of Irly Bird Lumberyards. Richard and Liz met on April 12, 1991 on a blind date, which Richard s boss had set up. Liz was an hour late and Richard felt stood up! But she had a good excuse-too much traffic on Kingsway in Vancouver. They were married on October 17, 1992 by Pastor Mayan in Trinity Lutheran Church in Richmond. Liz was baptized and confirmed just before the wedding, as her family didn t have a church home when she was growing up. After a wonderful honeymoon in Costa Rica, they settled in the Steveston area of Richmond from After that they built a house in Chantrell Park in South Surrey. (Incidentally, this property used to house Wayne Singbeil s first chicken farm before it was subdivided.) Their son, Adam, was born June 25, 1995 on Grandpa s birthday. Daughter, Emma, was born September 27, When the children were growing up, Adam played baseball and soccer and Emma was interested in softball, dance, and horseback riding. Richard coached their baseball, soccer and softball teams. The children attended Ray Shepherd Elementary, and Adam s grade two and three teacher was Rosie Sieg. The family took many trips together seeing such places as Winnipeg, Niagara Falls, Scotland and England to visit the Anderson side of the family, and Germany to visit Richard s relatives in Berlin, Potsdam, and Munich. They also traveled to France, Mexico and Hawaii. Adam just graduated from U. B.C. with a Bachelor of Applied Science Majoring in Civil Engineering and is eager to find a job. Summer jobs included seismic upgrading on the Burrard Street Bridge and developing early warning earthquake detection. (continued)
Emma is finishing her third year of Engineering Physics at U.B.C. and has two more years before her degree. In her Co-op program, she has written the Michael Smith Challenge exam for all grade ten students across Canada, did outreach to the Musquem First Nations, and helped coordinate and run Physics Olympics for grade ten students. Richard is now working for Canterbury Coffee as Chief Financial Officer, and lucky for us, is providing our church with coffee. Liz graduated from BCIT in 1999 with a Certificate in Financial Management, and worked until the children came along. Then she would take courses on the weekends and work evenings when the children were in bed. She continues to do bookkeeping out of her home. Speaking of home, Liz and Richard moved almost two years ago to a slightly smaller home on 128 A Street. The children are home during the university break. While the children were in Youth Group, Richard was chaperone on the trip to Whitehorse in Liz and Richard volunteer at Mount Olive as coffee servers, communion assistants, ushers, etc. They are happy that Mount Olive is their church home. 11 ELW Women s Bible Study Summer 2016 The Heart of the Matter, is a three session Bible Study on learning to deal with conflict through the ministry of reconciliation. It is written by Angela Shannon, pastor at King of Glory Lutheran Church in Dallas, Texas. Conflicts are nothing new to the church, Shannon says. What s miraculous is that God continues to create us anew. God insists on entrusting us with the ministry of reconciliation. In working with congregations, I have found that although people are familiar with the healing words of Christ s church, we must continue to learn the practical application of these words (from Women of the ELCA website All ladies are welcome to attend. The study starts at 1:00 pm, & takes approximately one hour followed by light refreshment. The studies are taken from the GATHER Magazine, published by Women of the ELCA. June 21, 2016 Session 1: Treasure in clay jars (2 Corinthians 4:7) Led by Pastor Peter July 19, 2016 Session 2: Seeking God (Jeremiah 29:14) Led by Joan Piller August 16, 2016 Session 3: The ministry of reconciliation (2 Corinthians 5:17-19) Led by Hazel Parker COMING UP THIS FALL: When God s not fair: Coming to terms with a merciful God, a three session Bible Study that explores biblical images of a God who acts beyond our conceptions of what s fair.
Evangelical Lutheran Women Annual Quilt Display 2016 for Canadian Lutheran World Relief (CLWR) Mission Work The ladies of the Quilting Group at Mount Olive Lutheran Church had their handiwork on display in the church sanctuary at the end of April. The Quilting Group carries out the primary mission work of the church s women s group, the Evangelical Lutheran Women (ELW). The Quilting Group meets weekly on Tuesday mornings, primarily to work on making & assembling patchwork quilts. Items for baby layettes are collected, with some items knitted or sewed as needed. Some of the work is done at home by volunteers as well as at the Tuesday work groups, & these include the making of baby quits & small girl s pillowcase dresses. Canadian Lutheran World Relief (CLWR) is one of Canada s most experienced relief & development agencies. It was formed in 1946 with a mission is to serve the world's poor and disenfranchised through community development, refugee resettlement, emergency relief, and humanitarian aid shipments (We Care program). (Information taken from CLWR sends annual We Care program shipments from Abbotsford, British Columbia for humanitarian aid to selected countries.
This year shipments are going to support health care and children s education in the poverty-stricken Chinandega area in Nicaragua, Central America. Sponsoring agencies are Lutheran Church-Canada & Iglesia Luterano Sinodo de Nicaragua missions. The Quilting Group makes quilts & other items during the year & transports them to Abbotsford during BC Baling Days in May. Donated items are accepted & compressed into bales for shipment. This year the Quilting Group contributed 143 quilts, 65 baby quilts, 73 baby layettes, 48 girl s dresses and 200 rolled bandages. The ladies of the Quilting Group welcome anyone who may be interested in attending the Tuesday morning group (9am-12noon), or who may be interested in participating by doing some of the work at home. No quilting experience is necessary. The morning is also a time for fellowship, & refreshments are served mid-morning. The group is winding down for this year, but will resume in September. For information, please call the Church Office at If you are moving or know of anyone who is: The Quilting group is in need of new sewing materials and clean sheeting in good condition.
