1 German Christmas Services 2018 German Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. Paul s New York, NY Celebrate the beginning of Advent with a festive service on Sunday, December 2 at 10:30am as the new crèche will be blessed. A bilingual Christmas Service with Krippenspiel (nativity play) for families will be held on December 24 at 2pm at the German Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. Paul. The nativity, which will be presented by numerous children and youth, will remind us of the birth of Christ. Followed by a classical bilingual Christmas Eve Service for all ages that will take place at 4pm. Miriam Gross On Christmas Day, December 25 at 10:30am a Christmas Day Service with festive music and Holy Communion will be celebrated. Afterwards, everyone is invited to coffee, tea and refreshments. About St. Paul's: St. Paul s is the last of many German parishes in NYC that still offers full worship service in German. Today, the congregation counts approx. 240 members of which many engage in the women s club or the choir. The particularity of St. Paul is that most members are not permanent residents in the USA, but rather members of German companies, the Federal Foreign Office or other German organizations which have offices in New York. St. Paul s looks back on a long history, which started in Probably the limited space and the growing number of Germans in St.-Matthäus parish motivated a group to split off and initiate their own worships with Pastor Friedrich W. Geissenhainer. A year later, the parish was able to build its first church on 15 th Street. Due to the growing number of German immigrants, the parish needed to build a bigger church just 18 years later. Unfortunately the new church, offering seats for 1,000 members was not meant to last either. Like the parish, the city of New York grew and the noise caused by a new high rail made it impossible to celebrate quiet services. In 1898, the parish moved into their new neo-gothic church on 22 nd Street, which remains the sanctuary until today. About Trinity Church: Trinity Lutheran Church was formed in 1890 by German immigrants who came from Lower Manhattan. As ferries and bridges opened up connecting Astoria and Long Island City with Manhattan, Trinity prospered. Services were originally conducted in German, but switched to English in the 1920s. 5 Village Lutheran Church Bronxville, NY On Saturday, December 22 at 5:30pm Pastor Clint Padgitt will be leading a German Christmas Service a service of lessons and carols. About Village Lutheran Church: In 1916, the Village Lutheran Church was founded by a few German families in Bronxville on the campus of Concordia College. Concordia College was a preparatory school for boys on their way becoming Lutheran pastors. The young church soon bought a building on the same street and started growing in the 1950s. The parish sees its main mission To know, live and share the Love of Christ. Therefore, it focuses on the needs of its members, individually or in groups, to assist and support them in the best way, extending to the whole world. For nearly 100 years the church has been a leader in the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. Also the Chapel School enjoys a good reputation, being one of the leaders of Lutheran Schools for almost 70 years. It opened its doors in 1947 and serves more than 350 colourbox students today. The elementary school is an integral part of the parish and aims in particular at the younger members. It provides them with a distinctive Christian education for a Christian lifestyle and to sets the base for academic success. As the German Christmas service already indicates, the German heritage is an integral part of the congregation. Until today, Immanuel Church stands out for holding weekly services in German. An additional unique characteristic of the congregation is its German language school. Dedicated to the preservation of the German language, today, the school teaches 125 children and 25 adults. The masses in German are held by Pastor Sönke Schmidt-Lange, who has previously served in Germany, England and Canada.
