1 The Spire WOODMONT CHRISTIAN CHURCH JUNE 5, 2018 FEBRUARY 5, 2019 Wednesdays at Woodmont Self-protection class Begins Wed., Feb. 20 See page 2 We are excited about the continuing progress on the expansion of our Church. The Metro required neighborhood meeting was recently held and we were pleased that there was no significant opposition to our project. We are working with our neighbors on Hoods Hill to provide landscaping buffers to protect their privacy while we expand the parking behind South Hall. Our project will go before the Metro Board of Zoning Appeals on Thursday 2/7 and we expect to receive the necessary approvals. The 50% plans have been completed and are out for pricing to the contractor-batten and Shaw and local subcontractors to confirm we are on budget. Once we have confirmation we are in budget and are confident the plans will meet our needs, we will release the architect -Centric to complete the 100% plans which should be done by late April with construction to begin in July and last approximately 11 months.

2 Self-protection class begins Feb. 20 by Mike Brent On Feb 20 and 27 (from 6:15 to 7:15 PM) in Room 105 there will be a class on Personal Self-Protection, which can be beneficial information for all members. The material covered in each session will be different, but it s not mandatory that you attend the first class to understand and appreciate the material covered in the second class. This class is intended to enhance the participant s situational awareness (including observation skills to avoid situations which could require self-protection), and also provide the participant with information as to basic techniques to end conflict quickly and efficiently should a situation turn violent (including some basic defensive maneuvers). Frank Thomas will be leading this 2 hour course, which is an abbreviated version of longer courses he s previously led for both the Woodmont Preschool staff and the Woodmont Shepherds Team. Frank is an Air Force veteran, and since leaving the Air Force has worked for over 20 years in the security field, much of that in loss prevention for retail businesses (including observation skills for their employees), and is currently a Senior Loss Prevention Manager for Lowes. This class will cover some important fundamentals, but in only 2 hours will not include martial arts self-defense training (Karate, Jiu Jitsu, Krav Maga, etc,) or provide indepth instruction on the use of defensive tools such as pepper spray, impact devices, and handguns. However, Frank can provide information about local courses for such training if you re interested. New series! Is Hollywood Discipling You? 3 Megan and I just returned from a long weekend in Napa Valley. We went to celebrate the 40th birthday of one of my close college friends that I have known for over 20 years. It was a lot of fun and always good to reconnect with old TCU friends that we rarely get to see. We spent some time in San Francisco, which is a great city, and then headed north. While touring a few of the vineyards, I found myself thinking about how many of Jesus teachings and parables have to do with wine. His first miracle in John s Gospel takes place at the wedding in Cana of Galilee where Jesus turns water into wine at a wedding celebration (John 2). This is often translated that the Kingdom of God is like a wedding celebration where you never run out of wine and the best is saved for last. It is a mindset that in God s Kingdom, there will always be enough to go around and the best is yet to come. In each of the Synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke), Jesus talks about the danger of putting new wine into old wineskins. Many believe Jesus is illustrating how his teachings represent a new paradigm that transcends the old paradigm. It is a new covenant, a new way of thinking, acting, and being that is based on love and not rules. In Matthew 2, we find the parable of the laborers in the vineyard where all the workers are paid the same wage regardless of the hours they worked. This will challenge our notion of what we think is fair. Wine and vineyards clearly have a central place in the gospels. Jesus taught using language and illustrations that were familiar and could be understood in first century Palestine. All of these teachings are to provide a better understanding of the Kingdom of God and how it must first take root in each of our hearts in order to be manifested in our words and actions. This Sunday, we will begin a new sermon series called Matters of the Heart. When the Apostle Paul wrote each of his letters to the various faith communities, he was often addressing a specific issue or problem that was going on in that community. When Paul wrote his letter to the Galatians around A.D., he was addressing the place of the Law of Moses in the lives of Gentile Christians. Paul writes this letter because there were many who still believed that Gentiles must first become circumcised (5:2-12), observe Jewish holy days (4:10), and maintain dietary restrictions in order to follow Christ. Paul adamantly argues that this is unnecessary and it shows a lack of confidence in Christ to be the direct intermediary to God. Therefore, Paul writes in Galatians 3: There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave and free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus. Gentiles have direct access to God through Jesus Christ. Paul encourages the Galatians to live by the Spirit, and if they do, certain things will be evident in the way that they live. What things is Paul talking about? LOVE, JOY, PEACE, PATIENCE, KINDNESS, GENEROSITY, FAITHFULNESS, GENTLENESS, and SELF-CONTROL He calls these the FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT. These are the marks of the Christian life. This type of behavior is a true sign that Christ reigns in your heart. The Fruit of the Spirit are matters of the heart. The core of Jesus s teaching has to do with motive and intent, why we do the things that we do. So over the next few weeks we will talk about each of these fruits and how we can get more of them into our lives and into our relationships. We will also identify some of the things that work in direct contrast to the fruits of the spirit including FEAR, ANGER, JEALOSY, ENVY, PRIDE, RESENTMENT, RESTLESSNESS, GLUTTONY, and DECEIT. It should be an interesting series. Blessings, Matters of the Heart by Clay Stauffer pg 3

6 Dear Woodmont Family, Thank you from Sheila Mathias Since I began treatment for breast cancer back in the Spring, I have been so blessed with the support I have received from all of you through that process. I have had some very challenging times throughout this treatment that has not always allowed me to be available to work, worship and carry on in my daily life. I m so thankful for this community of people that have been so supportive through all of these times. I have felt your concerns and strength through the many ways you communicated with me over the last few months. It is with a grateful heart that I thank you all so much for your prayers, visits, cards, support, meals, positive thoughts and stories of relatives or friends that have been cancer survivors for years. You have lifted me up in your very strong and thoughtful sentiments and supported me in ways for which I can t begin to thank you enough. I have been blessed by God using the treatment that I have received to rid my body of cancer. I will continue for the next few months to have some radiation treatments and medicines that will target the type of tumor that I had. I am so grateful to once again be worshiping with you, working again and regaining my strength!
