Carlton Cole, Fire Chief for Pinehurst, gave a very informative talk on the importance of Fire Prevention Safety. During his talk, Carlton discussed the importance of having Smoke Alarms in the home and the proper procedure for testing these alarms. He indicated that Kitchens Fires were the most common and that Kitchen Safety was extremely important. During Carlton s talk, he also discussed the importance of having an exit plan and practicing the exit plan. He also discussed the dangers of Smoking Inside, Outside Burning, and Carbon Monoxide Poisoning. At the conclusion of his talk, Carlton showed a video on a home fire that showed what can happen when someone is careless around fire. In conclusion, Carlton indicated that most Fire Departments would come and inspect smoke alarms and change batteries if necessary. Scott Bullard, Emergency Safety Director for the Fayetteville Fire Department talked about being prepared in the event a disaster occurs due to a storm. Scott discussed items that you would need to have prepared, and ready in case of an emergency items such as; emergency kits which consist of your basic and personal survival kits, emergency food and water, emergency communication solutions, emergency and disaster tools, and other items were discussed. Scott has been a member of Culdee Presbyterian Church all his life. Both speakers were very knowledgeable in their respective field and did a good job of explaining the importance of being prepared.
2 NEWS FROM THE CULDEE QUILTERS All of you are aware that we make lap quilts, and our yearly quilt that is given away at the Harvest Festival each year in October. Now at the request of our pastor, we have explored another talent into unchartered territory...altar Cloths for Advent. After checking prices on a set of altar cloths, ($ ), we decided to attempt to make them. We succeeded in finishing the blue pulpit cloth that was used before Christmas. The Bible sash and the communion table runner are in the process of being completed. Instead of $1500, this set will cost less that $100, but with many hours of thought and ingenuity. The fall quilt is in the planning stages. The Cancer ribbon wall hanging/quilt is now complete and awaiting a suitable frame. Expert quilting lessons are available upon request on Thursdays!!! The Culdee Quilters ****************************************************************************** PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN S NEWS Duties: Nursery: Circle 3 Flowers: Day Circle February is Blanket Fund month. Peggy Gibbs will be heading this project up, and always does a wonderful job. Culdee is one of the top givers in Presbytery giving s on Blankets. Watch for Peggy s news on this project, and save your donations for the last Sunday in this month. The new flower calendar is in the Narthex. If you would like to place flowers one Sunday in memory/honor of someone, please sign your name on the calendar, and Edith will put it in the bulletin for that Sunday. If your circle has a special project for 2012/2013, please let me know. Also, if you do not belong to a circle, now is the time to join one. We have a Bible study each month, and good fellowship with one another. We also have a joint meeting twice a year at the Church. Check the back of the bulletin for a circle you would like to join. We received a very nice letter from Barium Springs for the Christmas gifts we collected. This note is posted on the bulletin board in the Fellowship Hall. I also spoke with Lori Sees, and the Orphanage would like good/clean used clothing for babies, up through teenagers. If you have any of these items, and would like to donate them, please call me A thank you to Ellen Black for getting all the cards together to be mailed out to the sick and shut ins for the year. She does a great job heading this up each year. If you do not have your cards to mail, please see Ellen. Coming up in March we will be having Local Mission with a donation covered dish lunch after worship. We will have a speaker, and the date and speaker will be announced for this later. 4 FAMILY PROMISE The week of February 10, members of the Culdee community have the opportunity to host Jesus Christ. Will you help? Did that get your attention? Jesus himself tells us in Matthew 25 that whoever invites in the stranger, and feeds the hungry, and gives drink to the thirsty, is doing it unto Him. You truly never know the eternal difference you can make in the lives of "the least of these". A simple meal, a night on a not so comfortable cot, a kind smile, and welcome to our church are just of few of the ways you can be involved. Please take a moment to check the bulletin board in the sun room, and sign up for an opportunity to affect the lives of people who at this point in their lives need our help. Thanks, Angela ******************************************************************************

6 Culdee s Elder of the Month List for 2013 Acts 20:28 - Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood. MONTH ELDER PHONE NO. January Johnie Marion February Kent Black March John Blue April Scotty Pate May Larry Furr June Karen McKenzie July Mills Hodge August Art McKenzie September Janie Taylor October Don Williamson November Dannie Jackson December Mark Thompson James 5:14 Is any sick among you? Let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord:
7 ELDER OF MONTH FOR FEBRUARY 2013 Harold Kent Black I was born July 11, 1960 in Southern Pines, NC. My Family includes my wife, Bonnie, and sons Jed, Luke and Eli. Harold and Ellen Black, my parents, are longtime members of Culdee. I also have three sisters Debbie Halverstadt, Sylvia Balboni and Beth Ferrell and a brother, Keith. Debbie, Keith and Sylvia are all members of Culdee. I grew up in Eastwood, NC and attended Culdee. I graduated from Pinecrest High School and Sandhills Community College, and served in the N.C. Army National Guard. I like sports (especially football) and going to games when I can. I golf occasionally and really enjoy it when I do. Other interests include helping community oriented organizations like Family Promise. Also, I have enjoyed our three sons and watching them grow and change through the years. I am a General Contractor and build both commercial facilities and residential housing. We also own The MarketPlace Restaurant in Pinehurst. One funny thing about me, I guess, is that I like feeding birds in our back yard. Everyone might not know that I find Facebook a very useful communication tool for family and friends as long as not too much time is spent on doing so. My true hope for Culdee is that we would become more like Christ on a daily basis and that we would all be involved in the lives of each other. Also, that we would grow (not only in numbers) but grow spiritually together. My Favorite Bible verse: 2 Corinthians 5:17- Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold all things are become new.
8 For our sake He made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. (2 Corinthians 5:21) On the night that Jesus was arrested he was led to the house of Caiaphas, the high priest, where he appeared before the scribes and the elders. Beneath the site of that house there is a stone pit where prisoners would have been held including Jesus. As you might can see from the picture above there is a set of stone steps that lead to the edge of a 12 to 14 foot deep pit. Guards would have walked prisoners to the bottom step and then push them down to the cold stone floor. Standing in that pit, singing Amazing Grace was by far the most emotional moment of my trip to Israel. Images of Jesus lying on that stone floor for MY sins kept flooding my mind. As we near Ash Wednesday, and the season of Lent, I believe that is an appropriate image for all of us to keep before us. Officially, Lent is the 40 days between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday not counting Sundays. Historically speaking, the purpose of Lent is to offer us the opportunity to repent of our sins and seek a change in our heart. On Wednesday, February 13 th, we will observe the beginning of Lent with a traditional Ash Wednesday service. I encourage you to join us for this service of worship at 7:00 p.m. in the sanctuary. With prayers, hymns, scripture readings, and the imposition of ashes, this service is structured to remind us of our fragile human nature and reliance on God. During this service of worship we are reminded that we cannot save ourselves. In order to receive salvation and forgiveness of sins, we must turn our lives over to God and trust in His Son Jesus Christ. It is true that we are an Easter people; but before we can celebrate Easter Sunday, we must pass through the ashes with a spirit of repentance Lent is an important part of the church s year. Whether you fast or take on something new seems less important than spending time in prayer and refocusing your energies on your daily walk with your Lord and Savior. During this Lenten season I encourage you to focus on your faith and your need for God s saving grace through Jesus Christ in your life. Set aside time each day to pray and spend time with God, asking Him to forgive you of your sins, and to fill you with His presence in order that you may know His will for you. - Pastor Joe
