C Amen P Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another. (A brief silence for reflection.) Gracious God, C have mercy on us. 5 PRAYER OF THE DAY P In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen P The Lord be with you. C And also with you. P Let us pray. Glorious God, your generosity waters the world with goodness, and you cover creation with abundance. Awaken in us a hunger for the food that satisfies both body and spirit, and with this food fill all the starving world, through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. C Amen FIRST READING Isaiah 55:1-5 Bible page L A reading from Isaiah. God invites Israel to a great feast at which both food and drink are free. God also promises to make an everlasting covenant with all the people, with promises that previously had been limited to the line of kings. As David was a witness to the nations, these nations shall now acknowledge the ways in which God has glorified Israel. Ho, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and you that have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. 2 Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy? Listen carefully to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food. 3 Incline your ear, and come to me; listen, so that you may live. I will make with you an everlasting covenant, my steadfast, sure love for David. 4 See, I made him a witness to the peoples, a leader and commander for the peoples. 5 See, you shall call nations that you do not know, and nations that do not know you shall run to you, because of the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, for he has glorified you. L The Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. 5
PSALM Psalm 145:8-9, You open wide your hand and satisfy the desire of every living thing. (Ps. 145:16) 8 The LORD is gracious and full of compassion, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. 9 LORD, you are good to all, and your compassion is over all your works. 14 The Lord upholds all those who fall and lifts up those who are bowed down. 15 The eyes of all wait upon you, O LORD, and you give them their food in due season. 16 You open wide your hand and satisfy the desire of every living thing. 17 You are righteous in all your ways and loving in all your works. 18 You are near to all who call upon you, to all who call up- on you faithfully. 19 You fulfill the desire of those who fear you; you hear their cry and save them. 20 You watch over all those who love you, but all the wicked you shall destroy. 21 My mouth shall speak the praise of the LORD; let all flesh bless God's holy name forev- er and ever. SECOND READING Romans 9:1-5 Bible page L A reading from Romans. This begins a new section in Paul's letter in which he will deal with the place of Israel in God's saving plan. He opens by highlighting how Israel's heritage and legacy include being God's children, having God's covenants, being given God's law, participating in worship of God, and receiving divine promises. 6
I am speaking the truth in Christ I am not lying; my conscience confirms it by the Holy Spirit 2 I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. 3 For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my own people, my kindred according to the flesh. 4 They are Israelites, and to them belong the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises; 5 to them belong the patriarchs, and from them, according to the flesh, comes the Messiah, who is over all, God blessed forever. Amen L The Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. P Please stand for the Gospel Acclamation. THE GOSPEL Matthew 14:13-21 Bible page P The Holy Gospel according to Matthew, Chapter 14. C Glory to you, O Lord. After John the Baptist is murdered, Jesus desires a time of solitude. Still, his compassion for others will not allow him to dismiss those who need him, and he is moved to perform one of his greatest miracles. 13 Now when Jesus heard this, he withdrew from there in a boat to a deserted place by himself. But when the crowds heard it, they followed him on foot from the towns. 14 When he went ashore, he saw a great crowd; and he had compassion for them and cured their sick. 15 When it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, "This is a deserted place, and the hour is now late; send the crowds away so that they may go into the villages and buy food for themselves." 16 Jesus said to 7
them, "They need not go away; you give them something to eat." 17 They replied, "We have nothing here but five loaves and two fish." 18 And he said, "Bring them here to me." 19 Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven, and blessed and broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. 20 And all ate and were filled; and they took up what was left over of the broken pieces, twelve baskets full. 21 And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children. L The Gospel of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. GOSPEL RESPONSE (See previous page for Gospel Acclamation) CHILDREN S TIME SERMON Cary Bass-Deschenes HYMN OF THE DAY Break Now the Bread of Life Red Book #515 HOLY BAPTISM Pastor Roger Lee Presiding Red Book page 227 P In baptism our gracious heavenly Father frees us from sin and death by joining us to the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. We are born children of a fallen humanity; by water and the Holy Spirit we are reborn children of God and made members of the church, the body of Christ. Living with Christ and in the communion of saints, we grow in faith, love, and obedience to the will of God. Sponsors present child for baptism: We present Liliana Grace Mitchell for baptism. The presiding minister addresses parents or others who bring for baptism children who are not able to answer for themselves: P Called by the Holy Spirit, trusting in the grace and love of God, do you desire to have your child baptized into Christ? Response: We do. The presiding minister continues: 8
P As you bring this child to receive the gift of baptism, you are entrusted with responsibilities: to live with her among God's faithful people, bring her to the word of God and the holy supper, teach her the Lord's Prayer, the Creed, and the Ten Commandments, place in their hands the holy scriptures, and nurture them in faith and prayer, so that this child may learn to trust God, proclaim Christ through word and deed, care for others and the world God made, and work for justice and peace. Do you promise to help this child grow in the Christian faith and life? Response: We do. The presiding minister addresses sponsors: P Sponsors, do you promise to nurture her in the Christian faith as you are empowered by God's Spirit, and to help her live in the covenant of baptism and in communion with the church? Response: We do. The presiding minister addresses the assembly: P People of God, do you promise to support Liliana Grace Mitchell and pray for her in her new life in Christ? We do. The assembly stands. PROFESSION OF FAITH P I ask you to profess your faith in Christ Jesus, reject sin, and confess the faith of the church. Do you renounce the devil and all the forces that defy God, the powers of this world that rebel against God, and the ways of sin that draw you from God? Response: ALL I renounce them. P Do you believe in God the Father? ALL I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. 9
P Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? ALL I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. P Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? ALL I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. THANKSGIVING AT THE FONT Water may be poured: P The Lord be with you. And also with you. P Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. P We give you thanks, O God, for in the beginning your Spirit moved over the waters and by your Word you created the world, calling forth life in which you took delight. Through the waters of the flood you delivered Noah and his family, and through the sea you led your people Israel from slavery into freedom. At the river your Son was baptized by John and anointed with the Holy Spirit. By the baptism of Jesus' death and resurrection you set us free from the power of sin and death and raise us up to live in you. Pour out your Holy Spirit, the power of your living Word, that those who are washed in the waters of baptism may be given new life. To you be given honor and praise through Jesus Christ our Lord, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen 10
The assembly may be seated. BAPTISM P Liliana Grace Mitchell, I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen P Blessed be God, the source of all life, the word of salvation, the spirit of mercy. The presiding minister continues: P Let us pray. We give you thanks, O God, that through water and the Holy Spirit you give your daughters and sons new birth, cleanse them from sin, and raise them to eternal life. Laying hands, the minister prays: P Sustain Liliana Grace Mitchell with the gift of your Holy Spirit: the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord, the spirit of joy in your presence, both now and forever. Amen Sign of the cross is marked: P Liliana Grace Mitchell, child of God, you have been sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked with the cross of Christ forever. Amen WELCOME A lighted candle may be given: P Jesus said, I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will have the light of life. P Let us welcome the newly baptized. C We welcome you into the body of Christ and into the mission we share: join us in giving thanks and praise to God and bearing God's creative and redeeming word to all the world. 11
PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION A Filled by the Spirit, let us join the whole people of God in Christ Jesus in praying for the church, those in need, and all of God's creation. (You are invited to kneel.) A brief silence. Incline your ear and come to us, gracious and merciful God. Raise up among our congregations strong leaders to guide mission work, so that everyone who hungers is fed. Lord, in your mercy, C hear our prayer. A The earth flourishes in your steadfast love and care. Open your hand to satisfy the desire of every living thing, and have compassion over all that you have made. Lord, in your mercy, C hear our prayer. A In this war-torn world, the thirst for justice and peace is never quenched. We pray for those who live under tyranny. Watch over them and be near to all who call upon your name. Lord, in your mercy, C hear our prayer. A When we are falling, hold us up; when we are bowed down with grief or loneliness, raise us up; when we are hungry, fill us; when we are sick, heal us. We remember... Lord, in your mercy, C hear our prayer. A Accompany all those experiencing life transitions: those pursuing new studies; those who are retiring; and those moving to new communities. Give them the courage to embrace change and flourish in their new roles. Lord, in your mercy, C hear our prayer. Here other intercessions may be offered. A With gratitude for their loving witness and faith-filled lives, we remember those who have died. Receive the praise of all those who call upon your name. Lord, in your mercy, C hear our prayer. 12
A Into your loving hands, gracious God, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in your abundant mercy; through Jesus Christ, our Savior. C Amen SHARING THE PEACE P Please rise. The peace of the Lord be with you always. C And also with you. TITHES & OFFERINGS Come, Thou Font of Every Blessing OFFERING Paul Manz OFFERTORY PRAYER A Blessed are you, O God, maker of all things. Through your goodness you have blessed us with these gifts: our selves, our time, and our possessions. Use us, and what we have gathered, in feeding the world with your love, through the one who gave himself for us, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. C Amen THE GREAT THANKSGIVING P Please rise. The Lord be with you. C And also with you. P Lift up your hearts. C We lift them to the Lord. P Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C It is right to give our thanks and praise. Cary Bass-Deschenes 13
PREFACE It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ; who on this day overcame death and the grave, and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life And so, with the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: WORDS OF INSTITUTION P In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. 14
Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. For as often as we eat of this bread and drink from this cup, we proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. C Amen. Come Lord Jesus. THE LORD S PRAYER P Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us. C Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen INVITATION TO COMMUNION P Everyone who hungers, come to the table. Eat what is good, that you may live. Please be seated. We will practice continuous communion at the altar rail. All baptized Christians are welcome to commune. 15

Please Note: Choir rehearsals will resume on August 17 after the service. Where in the World is Jesus? Remember Jesus in your travels and be sure to mark the map in the Narthex. If you have taken flowers home in one of the church vases, please return it to the Sacristy. Missing large juice decanter. If you have borrowed it or know of its whereabouts, please return it to the kitchen or let us know where it is located. Thank you! You Have the Words of Eternal Life Yes, YOU! Peter said it about Jesus. But now Jesus says it about you. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. (Matt. 28:19-20) These are the words with which our Lord commissions all of his disciples. When we read the words of scripture during the service on Sunday we are sharing the words of eternal life. The redeemed life. The new life in Christ. The life that lasts eternally. It is no small task. While it may be true that anybody can read, not every reading is riveting. But we might also agree that the words of eternal life ought to, need to, and certainly can engage our imaginations, help us understand the law s demands, and assure us of God s grace. We will provide a workshop at 6:30 pm on Tuesday, September 9 in which we will explore many ways and means to improve our reading of scripture aloud in worship. If you are currently serving as a reader or assistant minister, or if you are interested in exploring this opportunity to serve, this one s for you. Come find out how you can make a difference! After all, we have the words of eternal life to share, and we want to sound like it! 18
