Craig Hopper Gospel Choir Director Craig Hopper was born in Seattle, Washington and studied at Seattle Central Community College, where he completed coursework studies in music theory, music composition, piano, and choral training. He has an extensive background in vocal direction and as a church musician. Craig knew at an early age that music ministry was his calling. While in high school, he served as a volunteer instrumentalist for the Inspirational Chorus and Chapel Choir at Mount Zion Baptist Church in Seattle. There, he developed his skills as a gospel singer and drummer. He would also work as the Assistant Director of the Brotherhood Chorus, and Director of The Hopper Family Singers; a family music ministry whose repertoire included beautiful a cappella African-American Spirituals. The group performed throughout the greater Seattle area from 1977 until In 2001, Craig was called as the Director of the St. Matthew Lutheran Church Adult Choir in Edmonds, and in 2004 Craig became Choir Director and Music Coordinator for the newly formed Edmonds Lutheran Church (ELC). At ELC he developed the music program, consisting of an adult choir, a vocal ensemble, a string ensemble, a chime choir and a praise chorus. After an extended sabbatical, Craig is excited to return to music ministry. He is looking forward to serving the people of Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church. He believes that through the ministry of music people can experience God s power and grace. Craig is married and has a son. In his spare time, he enjoys reading, exercising, Major League Baseball, and is a history buff. 4 PRLC Columbarium and Memorial Wall It has been over two years since the second phase of the Columbarium project was completed. Most of you know that the beautiful PRLC Columbarium is located right by the Sanctuary/Chapel side entrance. Of the 72 niches, 32 have been reserved and inurnments in 11 niches have taken place. The Columbarium is primarily for members of PRLC and their families, and each niche can hold one or two urns. The cost to purchase a niche is $1750. The Memorial Wall next to the Columbarium is designed for those who have had loved ones buried or ashes scattered elsewhere, and would like a place to have their name(s) permanently inscribed. Currently the cost per name is $225. If you ve been considering honoring a loved one in this way, it is a good time to contact the office, as engraving can only be done in the warmer months. If you would like information about either the Columbarium or the Memorial Wall, please contact Administrator Kirsten Olshausen at administrator@prlc.org or (206) Spirited Women News Spirited Women of PRLC meet weekly for spirited conversation. Group conversation, care for one another, coffee, tea and healthy snacks are shared as women discuss openly their questions, doubts, certainties and challenges of daily faithful living in response to the current book they are reading. Spirited Women meet every Wednesday through the school year from 10 to 11:30 a.m. in the Tree of Life Room. Our first fall meeting will be Wednesday September 12, at PRLC in the Tree of Life room at 10am. Our hostesses will be Linda Dalbec and Barb Doherty. We will be deciding on our next book, so we encourage you to bring ideas, along with recalling our previous thoughts. We hope to view Nadia Bolz-Weber s recent address to the ELCA Youth Gathering in Houston. 4

5 Outreach Update The Façade of Artemis In my daily interactions with clients, I often think about the role facades play in our lives. Whether it s my own struggle to remain consistently present, or a client s resistance to live in the truth of their situation, I m gently reminded of the need to bring our true selves into relationships with others and with God. Healing can begin only in that tender place of our revealed selves. For a number of years, I had frequent interactions with a client in her 60s who I ll call Artemis. I found these interactions profoundly difficult. Artemis would operate in an extended state of mania, and often sabotaged important meetings that could get her vital help. I began to see she had fabricated many details of her life including her name as well as squandered significant resources on beauty treatments and products to maintain what she thought was the correct outward appearance. I reached the point where I encouraged her to seek treatment for her mental struggles, and gave her some resources. Not pleased, she refused my advice, but still periodically called me to ask for prayer for the latest crisis. I obliged every time, but eventually I stopped hearing from her for a couple years. Artemis has come back around recently, but now goes by what I know to be her actual name. Gone is the mania and chaos. Gone is the evidence of squandered resources and the facade of outward appearance. In her presence I now experience peace, and our conversation encourages us both. Though I know this to be the same woman, interestingly, when I made inquiries about our past interactions she denied ever talking to me before. Whether she literally doesn t remember, or just doesn t want to dwell on who she used to be isn t important. She found the help she needed and could bring her real self into relationship again. We extended rent help again within the limitations of our program, and this brought some stability to her humble living situation. I m grateful to be able to see neighbors like Artemis through many ups and downs of life, all the while knowing our church can extend direct financial help in the right situation. This is possible because of your generous support of the Outreach Fund. Thank you! Zachary Courter Ordination Last year, we began supporting missionaries Zach and Rachel by joining the ELCA s Covenant Sponsorship program. Please contact Minister of Outreach Patrick Meagher if you d like to contribute, or simply mail or bring a check by the church (made out to PRLC) with Zach and Rachel in the memo line. Refugee Training at PRLC September 22 nd Are you interested in joining a growing effort among PRLC members to actively and directly support incoming refugee families in our area? 6 Welcome New Staff Members, continued from p. 1 College, having earned a Master of Music in Sacred Music there, and is the current Assistant Artistic Director for resound, a small choir exploring the ways choral music can be used to articulate a message of social justice and inclusion for all. Paul is a board member of the Institute for Social Change through the Arts, an organization focusing on the power artistic expression has to impact social change. He s recently been published in a collaborative work, The Complete Choral Warm-Up Sequences, led by Dr. James Jordan. Jeffrey Cooper Organist Jeffrey Cooper began his career in Northern California with undergraduate studies in organ at Chico State, studying with David Rothe while playing the organ for numerous local churches. Since then, he has obtained a master's degree in sacred music from the University of Notre Dame and a doctoral degree from the University of Houston, studying with Craig Cramer, Robert Bates, and Matthew Dirst. His doctoral research involved Buxtehude's lost suites on the seven planets and their influence on Bach's early works. During his time in Texas, he has been organist and director of music at St. Christopher Episcopal Church in League City, as well as organ scholar at St. Philip Presbyterian Church in uptown Houston. His wife, Anna, is another musical Californian with a background in fiddle and voice. Together they keep a joyful household (to say the least) with two daughters: Elizabeth, age 3, and Ingrid, age 1. Jeffrey will begin his work at PRLC the first of December. 6 Update on the PRLC Tower Maintenance Project Thank you to all who have so positively responded to our appeal for funding the needed maintenance project of the PRLC tower and some of the distinctive exterior masonry! As most of you may have heard by now, we are scheduled for repairs, cleaning and sealing work in September, hopefully while our dry weather hangs around. It has been a long time since our tower and some of the exterior walls (especially on the weather-beaten South side) have had any maintenance, and they are overdue for cleaning, sealing and (in the case of the top of the tower) painting. We want our distinctive landmark to look its best! To date the office has received donations and pledges totaling over $56,000, which represents over 2/3 of the anticipated cost. We are still gladly accepting your designated gifts, however, which will allow us to retain more of the reserves in the Building and in the Maintenance Reserve Fund for other projects. Please mark your gift Tower Campaign in the memo line. You could also use your credit card and do a one-time donation on our website, - just designate it to the Building Fund. If your employer offers matching funds through Benevity Causes, this would be a great project since there are restrictions on what your matched gifts can go to the Building Fund is one of the options listed, together with the Foodbank and our Outreach Fund. Thank you in advance! A special tip for Thrivent members: If you like, you could request that your choice dollars are sent to PRLC. Just let me know that you would like these funds to go to the Tower Campaign. Every dollar counts! If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you. 11 Pastor s Page Every Day Is a New Beginning Sis Dakan, longtime saint of Phinney, died in early August. Before breathing her last Sis said, Every day is a new beginning. Sis s last words are now permanently imprinted on my heart and mind. While none of us can explain what happens after death, we trust that God will make of it a new beginning. The funeral preface for Holy Communion in the Book of Common Prayer says it this way: For your faithful people, Lord, life has changed, not ended Maybe Sis s last words can function as a kind of mantra for living as well as dying. Martin Luther advised we begin each day by making the sign of the cross to remember our baptism. By such a gesture we embrace each day as a new beginning. A daily ritual like making the sign of the cross isn t all that different from commending our beloved dead to God s eternal care. Both are gestures of surrender and trust. For Christians, new beginnings aren t declarations of getting it right or resolutions to try harder. Beginning anew is rather a gesture of prayer, trusting God to do a new thing. And God has an uncanny knack for bringing newness through the forgiveness of sins, the healing of relationships, and renewing love. One of the things I ve noted about the journey of grief, be it grieving our beloved dead or grieving loss in our relationships, is that God, who weeps with us, also works to bring life from death, especially when enemies becomes friends, the estranged are reconciled, and when we give up control. Life changes, it doesn t end. Sis s mantra might serve us well as we launch into autumn and the beginning of a new program year. It s back-to-school time, and it s that time of the year when a host of parish activities reemerge BFJ, the WAY, Sunday school, circles, choirs and much more. In many instances, God s work will be cloaked in new wineskins: new staff members, a new vicar, and a few new approaches to forming disciples young and old. Yet, even with the tried and true, God always seems to be up to something new and life-giving and life-changing. Consider making this something of a daily practice make the sign of the cross on your forehead, chest and shoulders. Remember you belong to God who, through the gift of baptism has set you apart to love your neighbor. Breathe in deeply the gift of prayer and say something like Every day is a new beginning.
