For centuries, St Paul s Cathedral has graced the London skyline, withstanding fire, warfare, fog, filth and every other test of time but not without continuous effort and considerable sums of money.

Every crumbling stone, worn mosaic, faded illumination and wheezing organ pipe must be painstakingly restored if we are to protect our heritage for generations to come. SAM LLOYD St Paul s Cathedral was completed on Wren s 76th birthday, in October 1708, when the final stone was laid in the Lantern. Some 300 years later, the expert masons of the Cathedral Works Department undertake a painstaking programme year on year, restoring and cleaning the stonework to reveal the full glory of their predecessors craftsmanship.

CRESCENT LODGE The forbidding West Steps, the challenging acoustics and change of floor level between Crypt and Cathedral make access difficult for some visitors and worshippers. Great improvements are being made, including re-laying paving and even offering virtual access from the comfort of the Crypt. Future plans involve broadening access to visitors of all ages with enhanced education and interpretation facilities.

PHILIP WAY St Paul s world-famous organ comprises 7,256 pipes and 140 stops. Throughout the year, it accompanies the Cathedral s 40 boy choristers and 18 adult vicars choral in the full range of regular and special services and concerts. In 2007, a 1 million restoration programme began, including the installation of a second console to enable the organist to see and be seen by congregations and concert-goers alike.
