2 Holy Spirit Parish Gospel Meditation: The Baptism of the Lord Think of what it's like to wait a long time. Can you imagine what it would be like to wait for centuries? No one person lives that long, of course. But for the Israelites, they had heard the stories from generation to generation. They had been conquered time and time again, and now "the people were filled with expectation, and all were asking in their hearts whether John might be the Christ. They had been waiting for a Messiah, one who did miraculous deeds and said profound things; someone aglow with the glory of God. We all know what it's like to hope and be disappointed. But what if your hopes were fulfilled? That day at the Jordan River, an audience had gathered. Among the crowd for baptism was an unknown man. Perhaps he was dirty from weeks in the desert. His hands had the calloused palms of a tradesman, a carpenter. He and John the Baptist may have embraced with the familiarity of the cousins they were. This man wades into the Jordan for a good, solid dunking. As he rises from the water, the One who breathed life into Adam gasps for air like any other man. But then "heaven was opened." The clouds in the sky part miles above. "And the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove." An apparition with substance sails through the sky. It exudes gentleness and power all at once. "And a voice came from heaven, 'You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased." Can you imagine the sight? For the crowd, there is no doubting what they have seen, who they have seen. Can you imagine this encounter with our God who keeps His promises? What are you waiting for? As always, I will continue to pray for all of you. Once again, thank you! Fr. Fred Morse Catholic Q & A Why do we baptize infants when the Bible says "repent and be baptized"? How can an infant repent? When you take a trip, you do not wait until you run out of gas before you fill the tank...at least not on purpose! You fill your tank and pack your bags as you anticipate a trouble-free journey. We can make a similar case for the baptism of children as they begin their spiritual journey. In the early church, only adults were baptized when they professed faith in Jesus as the Messiah. As the church grew, children were baptized and raised in faith. Baptism was the first sacrament of initiation, followed by confirmation and holy Communion. The Bible does not limit baptism to adults. Several passages point to infant baptism. Jesus said "Let the children come to me and do not hinder them," while Paul would baptize people "and their household." He did not limit baptism to adults. None of the early Church Fathers wrote that the practice was wrong or that a formal act of repentance was a necessary step. If anything, our whole life is an act of repentance, a continual struggle to turn from sin and be faithful to the Gospel. We believe that baptism is more than a symbolic act of faith. It forgives original sin as well as personal sin, and brings us into the church, where we begin our journey of faith Liturgical Publications Inc The Holy Spirit Parish Pastoral Council has teamed up with the Office of Lifelong Faith Formation and Parish Social Life to continue bringing faith community and education events to the parish. Entitled Journey in Faith adult formation with separate sessions for children, these events are geared toward adult faith formation, but there are also separate children s sessions. All are welcome! Our mission, as Catholics, is to grow closer to Jesus and to share His story with others. These sessions enable us to learn more while evangelizing one another as a faith family. An informational brochure, containing the schedule, information, and brief biographies of the speakers for the adult sessions for the remaining four events, is available in the narthex of each church. The next Journey in Faith event will take place next Sunday, January 20, at 3 PM at St. Martha Church in Kennebunk. The topic will be Initiation Sacraments, presented for the adult session by Lori Dahlhoff, Director of Lifelong Faith Formation for the Diocese of Portland. 2

5 The Baptism of the Lord Youth Ministry Matthew 25:35 Meal For I was hungry, and you gave me food; I was thirsty and you gave me drink; a stranger and you welcomed me... (Matthew 25:35) Catholicism is a 10-week study series by Bishop Barron. It takes the viewer around the world and deep into the Catholic Faith. This study series can be illuminating by its spiritual and artistic treasures of this global culture which claims more than one billion of the earth s people. From the sacred lands of Israel to the beating heart of Uganda, from the glorious shrines of Italy, France, and Spain, to the streets of Mexico, Kolkata, and New York City, the mystery of Catholicism is revealed. The Catholicism series will begin at St. Mary Church in Wells this Tuesday, January 15, at 1 PM, and at St. Martha Church in Kennebunk this Thursday, January 17, at 6:30 PM. To register, please call Rosanne at The Matthew 25:35 Meals put on by the youth ministries of both Holy Spirit and St. Therese of Liseux Parishes are served every second Tuesday of the month at St. Ignatius Church Hall in Sanford from 5:30-6:30 PM. To support this community meal project, gift cards to Hannaford, Walmart, or Shield s Meats in Kennebunk, are welcome. Gift cards help to buy specific items that will definitely be used.
