Please receive the Eucharist in the hand if possible, and refrain from holding hands at the Our Father and shaking hands at the sign of peace. All should wash their hands frequently. Thank you. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, February 14, and goes until the evening Mass of the Lord's Supper on Holy Thursday, March 29. Ash Wednesday & Good Friday - Both February 14 and March 30 are days of fast and abstinence (from meat) in the universal Church. All Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence (from meat) in the Church in the United States. The Law of Abstinence - Binds Catholics aged 14 and older. 5 February 11, 2018 GOSPEL MEDITATION February 11, th Sunday in Ordinary Time We may not like it, but generosity and risk often go hand-in-hand. At least, that's what Jesus shows us in today's Gospel as a leper approaches him for healing. Until the nineteenth century, lepers were shunned to the margins of society for fear of spreading the disease. To touch a leper was to risk becoming unclean yourself. In today's Gospel, Jesus defies convention. "Moved with pity, he reached out his hand, [and] touched him." The leper is healed! But this is not the only risk Jesus takes. Before Jesus heals the man, he knows full well the desperate nature of his situation. Jesus knows that this man will be overjoyed upon being healed, and that he just might tell everyone he knows. For a Messiah looking to temporarily fly under the radar, healing this particular leper might not be the best idea. Jesus heals anyway. It can be easy to become calculated in our giving. If I go out of my way to help this person, how will it affect my reputation? How will this charitable donation affect my budget? How could I possibly make time to volunteer regularly? In today's Gospel, Jesus casts these concerns aside. He touches the untouchable. He reaches the unreachable. For his efforts, he receives a betrayal of his request for silence. "The man went away and began to publicize the whole matter." Before long, "it was impossible for Jesus to enter a town openly." Jesus is forced to remain "outside in the deserted places." It would appear, perhaps, that he is unable to accomplish his mission. When we take a risk to be generous, things might not follow the prescribed path. We might be disappointed. We also might be surprised! Our witness to radical generosity is attractive to a world in desperate need. Indeed, when Jesus took risks for love, "People kept coming to him from everywhere." 5

6 Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time ATTENTION: HOLY SPIRIT LECTORS Upcoming Growth in Ministry Session Keeping it Fresh STATIONS OF THE CROSS will begin the Friday after Ash Wednesday, February 16, at both churches. They will take place each Friday of Lent. Stations at St. Mary s in Wells will be at 12 Noon, followed by a Lenten luncheon. Stations at St. Martha s in Kennebunk will be at 6 PM, preceded by a Lenten supper at 5:30 PM. The program provides an opportunity for us to live in solidarity with our poorest and most vulnerable brothers and sisters through the three Lenten pillars of praying, fasting, and almsgiving. When we put money in our rice bowls, we are making a difference. What we give for Lent might change lives! On Ash Wednesday, our rice bowls will be blessed at one of the masses at St. Mary and St. Martha Churches, and they will available to all throughout most of the Lenten season. Retreat at Marie Joseph Spiritual Center Biddeford Pool, Maine Holy Spirit Prayer Shawl Ministry We meet monthly to knit/crochet and offer prayers over the shawls, so as to pass along our personal petitions and intentions for the recipients.
