I loved Halloween as a kid and a part of me still finds it charmingly nostalgic in the memories it draws up from my youth. I loved the spooky filmstrips we watched in class as a little boy. I loved the Halloween parties I attended dunking for apples and playing games. And of course I really loved trick or treating and the fun of being out on a windy night collecting candy looking at all the decorations. I also remember a slushy snowy Halloween from my childhood. That was not as enjoyable. As the years have gone by and now that I m a priest, I frown on the gore and smile at the spooky. I also have pondered what of Halloween is real, particularly ghosts. What do we believe about ghosts? The faith offers us some guidance in this realm. The spiritual realm is real. We are obliged to accept the existence of angels or pure spirit creatures. From the archangels of scripture (Gabriel, Michael and Raphael) to the choirs of angels that surround God s throne, to our Guardian Angel, they are real. Sometimes they appear to us. Mary was startled by the appearance of the angel but was soon comforted and told not to be afraid. Good angels encourage us to move toward God, to not be afraid and to stay faithful. They can appear in human form but don t have to and often they do not appear it all. The Letter to the Hebrews speaks of us often being visited by angels unaware. There are also fallen angels. They are alluded to in scripture and have rebelled against God and his purposes. They are especially opposed to our salvation. Jesus called these evil spiritual beings demons. They can sometimes manifest themselves but often do not. They either present themselves as more powerful than they really are in order to frighten us into submission or they present themselves as harmless as scripture says, even Satan can disguise himself as an angel of light. These more haunting apparitions, particularly if unsettling and scary, are more of what you see in the paranormal realm. What of deceased persons? Saints and countless persons through the ages have testified to the experience of persons appearing to them. This is only possible if God permits it. Padre Pio spoke of souls appearing to him asking for prayers at Mass. These were souls moving forward from the experience of purgation into the fullness of eternal life. These are the Holy Souls of All Soul s Day. Sometimes called poor souls because they are not at their ultimate destiny yet. They are good. They do not menace. They have either appeared to thank us for our prayers, to ask for our prayers, or even to encourage us to move toward God. They can only appear with the permission of God. Menacing apparitions of people are more likely demons. Seeking to summon the dead or communicate with the dead for knowledge is forbidden and a sin as testified to by scripture. Mediums can be manipulated by demons and are never to be consulted. This is true also of Ouija boards. God permits evil to exist in our world with the assurance that in the end all things will serve Him and be worked for his glory. Nothing escapes the sovereignty of God. Evil for its part is permitted to chastise us for a while but its power is passing and in the end finite and will end. It s allure is real but it can also serve to try us as gold is tested in fire when it is resisted. It makes our allegiance to God even stronger. So my encouragement to you is to enjoy the charm of All Hallows Eve, be safe, stay away from the gore and enjoy the childhood memories being formed of a beautiful Fall night. Memories that become some of the most wonderful of many a youth. Fr. Mark Vander Steeg

3 October 27 & 28, 2018 PAGE 3 The 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time And Jesus said to him, Go your way; your faith has made you well. And immediately he received his sight and followed him on the way. (MARK 10:52) Faith is believing in something even though you may not be able to see it. Many people think that miracles don t happen anymore. But, if you focus on the positive, not the negative, focus on your blessings instead of your hardships, miracles will seem common and you will see God s active presence in your daily life. Religious Education News Adam Horn-R.E. Director St. Bernard School Kris Hess, Administrative Assistant PAWS FOR A CAUSE brought in over $1200. We will begin assembling the blessing bags and making the fleece lap blankets at our meeting on Nov. 27th. Thank you to all that donated to such a great cause. 8th grade shadow day at Notre Dame will be on Tuesday, October 30th. In November we will be collecting food items to help with Thanksgiving baskets and to stock the parish pantry. Watch the Tuesday envelope for more information. Peace Pray Learn The Week Ahead: October 31 st Happy Halloween! There will be NO Religious Education Classes this week. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR BLOOD PRESSURE SCREENING If you are a RN or LPN, please consider volunteering for our BP screening that is offered after all Masses, the second weekend of each month. Some Masses have not been covered due to a lack of volunteers. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
