Come and join us for our next gathering on Monday, September 24 at 6:30 PM at Covenant UMC. We will be discussing the book Fly Girls: How Five Daring Women Defied All Odds and Made Aviation History by Keith O Brien. Want to read ahead? October s book is Squeezed: Why Our Families Can t Afford America and will be meeting October 29 in the Fireside Room at St. Paul s UMC. If you have any questions, please call the church office at or Pastor Sami at: spack-toner@stpaulshelena.org (DB) RECLAIMING ANGER: As Christians, we process grief, show love, understand compassion, and accept forgiveness. But when it comes to anger, we often reject it as not being useful or holy. We re told to just let it go, get over it, or count to ten. In the church, anger is treated like a dirty little secret. But why? God gets angry. Why can t we? We re made in the image of God, and being truly human is to fully embrace who God made us to be. In Reclaiming Anger, David Dorn asserts that anger doesn t have to be a forbidden, destructive emotion. Biblical anger serves a purpose. In this study you ll discover what anger is, how God gets angry, when we need anger, and when we need to let it go. Join us at St. Paul s UMC on Wednesdays from Sept. 19 Oct. 10 6:30-7:45 PM or at Covenant UMC Oct. 24 Nov. 14 6:30-7:45 PM. Cost: $7 per book. f you have any questions, please call the church office at or Pastor Sami at: spack-toner@stpaulshelena.org 6 (DB) DIALOGUES: THE REFUGEE CRISIS. Are you concerned by the growing crisis of refugees found worldwide? Do you feel helpless to do anything? Are you ready to begin a dialogue about this country s stance on immigration and those seeking refuge? If so, this course is for you. Each week we will watch a new video highlighting a key piece to the growing, worldwide refugee crisis that will spark your interests, educate and incite meaningful conversations on the topic. At the end of the course, we will be inspired to reach out to those in need instead of closing doors, building walls and creating closed communities. This course will be led by Phaedra Raymond beginning on September 19 thru November 28 at 6:30-8 PM in the Fireside Room in Susanna s Place. Participants are asked to attend all sessions and participate in lively discussions that build off of one another. 3 PASTOR S CORNER This Week at a Glance When I was in 5th grade, we had confirmation class at my church. Over twenty squirmy 5th graders met weekly with the pastors eating dinner, playing games, and learning about the Christian faith together. At the conclusion of the class we had the opportunity to join the church. My friend decided not to join the church because she didn t believe in Jesus. Which got me thinking. What did I believe? I pondered that for a few days and decided that I did believe in Jesus, so I joined the church. Little did I know how that would impact my life! How has following Jesus impacted your life? Jesus summed up all the commandments in these two: Love God with your whole self and Love your neighbor as yourself. We love God and neighbor in our personal lives and as a faith community. See the graphic. 2 Worship: Connecting with God in community through weekly worship, singing, sharing communion Devotion: Connecting with God personally through prayer, devotion, walking, singing Mercy: Loving others through acts of compassion. Justice: Loving others by confronting injustice and engaging in ministry with those on the margins. Which area of discipleship comes most easily to you? Which is a growing edge? Let s grow in faith together as we continue on this adventure of discipleship! Pastor Patti We welcome all people of any age, gender, color, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, economic status, or disability into the full life and membership of our congregation. ST.
