2 After Fire, Devotions Signal Normality May Day took on special significance this year around TWR s office in Cary, North Carolina. May 1, 2018, marked the first time that staff had been able to gather again in the ground-floor auditorium for morning devotions since a serious fire three days before Christmas turned office life upside down. In the meantime, staff members had been sitting on stairs or standing around the edges of the downstairs lobby for daily devotions and the weekly staff meeting. Although the fire didn t interfere with TWR s global ministry, the return of the devotions routine represented a meaningful step away from upheaval and toward normality. In the view of Paul Stobbe, TWR director of ministry services and supervisor of the restoration process, The staff has been wonderful in attitude and in patience with each other. This is like you re moving for six months, and you can never settle down. Several initially relocated departments have returned to new cubicles in old work areas, while others such as TWR Women of Hope, U.S. Hispanic Ministry and Ministry Services will remain in temporary quarters until renovation of the severely damaged part of the facility is completed. The rest of the 80 percent or more of the building was heavily smoke-damaged and has been thoroughly cleaned, re-carpeted, repainted and largely refurnished. Stobbe expects the extensive renovation along with a major renovation project begun prior to the fire to turn third-floor storage area into badly needed office space to be finished in July. As the Lord leads, please pray in the following ways: Praise God for the many supporters who rallied to the call and generously donated to the recovery fund. Ask him to grant the ministry favor as recurring building inspections must be passed. 3 president s column by Lauren Libby, President/CEO My grandfather, a Kansas rancher, used to tell us, his grandsons, If you aim at nothing, you will hit it every time! We at TWR aim at fulfilling a God-given calling: to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ to the whole world by mass media so that lasting fruit is produced. This calling is what we pray for, invest our lives in and believe is becoming reality in 190 countries and 230-plus languages every day. Of the over 20 million interactions with audience members of our broadcast and digital platforms in the past year, one event that stands out indelibly was having believers in Venezuela respond to a special broadcast from Bonaire. In fact, 50 percent of those responding said they or a family member had met Jesus personally through listening to broadcasts from Bonaire. One listener said, Even though things are tough here in Venezuela, TWR Bonaire is the thing that gives us hope to go on. In India, over 2,000 listeners gathered in late January to celebrate 40 years of TWR ministry. One man walked for two days, took a train for one day, and spent another day on a bus just to be in attendance. I asked him why he had made such an effort. His response: TWR s broadcast is my spiritual lifeline, and I use TWR360 to prepare for sermons I share in my house church! We heard the same story over and over during this gathering. You, together with the TWR staff, accomplished great things for the Lord in the past year. The Bonaire station was upgraded from 100,000 to 450,000 watts. Special programming for Muslims was created and is being used to reach them. TWR360 saw its monthly sessions surpass the 1 million mark. A new opportunity arose to put a 200,000-watt outlet in the Silk Road area of Central Asia. TWR men s ministry, comprising Champions Arise and Every Man A Warrior, expanded to 10 countries this year. TWR Women of Hope expanded in Africa, and RiverCross equipped people to minister to abused children in the developing world. The Japanese ministry doubled this year as TWR launched new FM stations and on-the-ground outreach. The prophet Isaiah states, I will give you as a light to the nations that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth (Isaiah 49:6). That is the Lord s goal, and we at TWR align with his purposes. Jesus wants a big voice in the world. That is what TWR is all about, giving him that voice to the nations. 6 listeners cheer powered-up radio The metallic clinking of buckles and accessories attached to the harnesses worn by antenna riggers brought back nearly forgotten memories to Edison Rijna. Rijna s childhood replayed as he watched a friendly competition demonstrating the riggers safety gear, a fun activity during the celebration and dedication of TWR Bonaire s powerful new 450,000-watt transmitter. His father had been a worker at the TWR transmitting station decades ago when it was still a relatively new facility on the Caribbean island. 6 twr MAGAZINE

I remember that clinking when I was a boy, Rijna, now the island governor, reminisced as he addressed the multinational audience on hand for the Jan. 30, 2018, dedication. My father comes home with his belt full of paint. Besides that, Trans World Radio has always been a big part of our community. Even the red beacons on the 478-foot towers play an important part, he said, pointing the way to Bonaire for boats at sea. We are greatly honored with the role we play, thanks to you, Gov. Rijna added, the role we play in reaching millions of listeners in the Caribbean and Latin America. We are also very grateful to you for the contribution you make to our community economically, socially and spiritually. I would like to thank Trans World Radio for placing Bonaire on top of the world by making us a beacon in reaching many islands and countries surrounding us. Bonaire Station Director Bernard Oosterhoff proclaimed the purpose of the celebration as he welcomed the many guests. Among them were volunteers who helped with construction, supporters who prayed for and donated to the $3.8 million Power Up project, representatives of TWR national partners across the region, and ministry officials and staff members, including a few TWR Bonaire veterans from earlier days. We want to dedicate this transmitter to the Lord, Oosterhoff said, that it really does the work that he has prepared it for, to reach millions of people with the gospel of Jesus Christ all the way from Cuba down to Brazil. In the months since the Power Up dedication, responses from listeners indicate those goals are being realized. One message to Shine 800 AM, the newly adopted name for the Bonaire broadcasts, came from a listener more than 2,000 miles away, beyond the expected to reach of the new signal. For the first time, I was able to tune into your station, arriving loud and clear in Mexico. Thanks to God for this radio ministry, now with more power, to bring the message of salvation to more people! Alberto Gonzalez, Gov. Edison Rijna and TWR CEO Lauren Libby launch the transmitter. Several replies have arrived from crisis-plagued Venezuela. The station is very audible, wrote one. With all honesty, since 50 years ago, it has not been heard so clearly. Another said, I am happy to hear the signal from with greater power and clarity. And another: What a blessing! This is the first time I have heard [Shine] from my location. Reaching all of Cuba was a major objective of the Power Up campaign, and broadcasters with Haven Today, a new program aired over Shine 800, visited the communist country in February. They traveled to areas unreached by Shine prior to the signal upgrade. Shine Bonaire is as strong as the local station," the team reported. "People promising to listen in at the four churches where we passed out Bibles and then listened together with them. Packed houses everywhere. Annabel Torrealba, TWR director for northern and central Latin America and the Caribbean, is thrilled by the early feedback to the powerful signal. Too many people think Latin America is already reached by the gospel and further outreach isn t needed, she said. Just look at the news from any country in Latin America and see how lost most people are, the Venezuelan native said. Bonaire s broadcast signal is so important because we need to reach that generation that s lost. TWR personnel have pondered whether broadcasts were going out too late for listeners in Colombia, struggling to emerge from a long civil war. But Torrealba contends the schedule is fine because guerrillas assigned to stand watch will be awake, constituting a perfect audience! twr.org 7

8 DISCIPLING THE DISABLED It s a common response among TWR Ukraine listeners who are disabled: If I had stayed healthy and complete, I probably would not have met Jesus. But becoming a handicapped person has brought me to faith. These responses are indeed testimonies that God brings new life to broken bodies. IN UKRAINE individual s value to his or her contribution to the state and literally kept the disabled off the streets and cloistered in sanitariums. Perhaps the worst part of a disabled person s lack of mobility, however, is the social isolation and depression they face. The ongoing conflict that erupted in 2014 between Ukraine and Russian-backed separatists has resulted in over 10,000 lives lost and 1.6 million people internally displaced, with millions more left waiting in neighboring countries. Though the Ukrainian war has mostly faded from world media coverage, the jarring effects are still acutely felt, especially in the lives of the disabled, which include 2.6 million, or 6 percent, of Ukraine s population, including many who lost limbs in the conflict. Over 24,000 people have been wounded in the Ukrainian conflict to date. One of the greatest barriers disabled people face is mobility, especially when living on the upper floors of high-rise apartment buildings that do not have elevators. Though the issues of disability rights and inclusion are beginning to gain social awareness, decades of Soviet brutalist architecture still stand, a painful reflection of the former ideology, which ascribed an To wounded soldiers and other disabled Ukrainians, the violence continues to haunt their bodies long after they ve left the front lines, perhaps in tingling sensations of burned flesh and in phantom pains of limbs that no longer exist. Yet the greatest disability is not physical, but spiritual; and the greatest need is not health, but a hope in Christ. That is why TWR Ukraine s program You Are Mine! is an important encouragement to disabled and homebound Ukrainians. Featuring faith-filled testimonies from Ukrainians with disabilities, listeners can hear stories from more than 160 interviews in over 200 programs created in the last 11 years. I listen to you every day and rejoice about the fact that you visit me a lonely person, writes one listener confined to his apartment. You fill my house with joy, comfort and encouragement. 9 a primary goal of TWR360 is to assist its 200-plus content-contributing partners in fulfilling their own missions to evangelize the world. A great example is partner Daily Audio Bible, which was reaching large audiences in the U.S. and some other English-speaking countries but making fewer inroads with its translated content. Creech urged DAB s representative to put its Arabic content on twr360.org, and the programs were then promoted through international channels. TWR360 plays to its strength You don t operate a ministry website that draws millions of users without developing a pretty good insight into where its main strength lies. TWR360, a web portal and mobile app providing Christian audio, video and text content in 54 languages, raced past the 1 million-session mark in January During that quarter, 3 million unique users visited twr360.org, a digital ministry of TWR. David Creech, TWR360 marketing and operations manager in Cary, North Carolina, points out that the success of any such outreach involves more than cutting-edge technology and a few expert marketing techniques. God brings those users, he says. God moves hearts. It s not TWR360 doing it. After six months, I showed him the numbers, and then I gave him a one-year total, Creech says. He was blown away and said, This is fantastic. Why don t we put all our languages on TWR360? Because we see the strength of 360 is in language distribution. Results like that bring increased buy-in from ministry partners as they recognize the value of TWR360 s global-distribution expertise. And their Bible-based content is having an impact, surprisingly so within several countries known for being inhospitable to the gospel. Half the countries that rank highest for use of the TWR360 app also rank high on the Open Doors World Watch List of countries where Christians face the most persecution. Presumably, Creech says, believers and seekers fly under the radar by accessing the biblical content via a smartphone app. One user wrote to the TWR360 team, I have many questions to ask about religion. I was born into a Muslim family, but I believe Jesus is the only way to salvation. Serving this user and as many others like him as possible is the motivation for TWR360 s new goal: having 100 languages available on the site within the year. But as Creech, his team and TWR360 originator Ralf Stores explore how to make the site and app the most effective ministry tools possible, the Lord has led them to concentrate on a key strength reaching the whole world beyond the United States. Although U.S. use keeps growing (ranking among the top three or four countries), twr.org 9

I redialed, and for the first time, I was able to hear the Thought for the Day, Peter (not his real name) later wrote to TWR s national partner for India. Amazingly, the message was on anger. I was touched by it and ashamed of my anger and felt a great need to change. I started praying for myself. Every day, roughly 4,000 calls like Peter s seek out the Thought for the Day or scriptural Promise recordings, or the callers can speak to a counselor or learn more about Jesus Christ. Even more extraordinary, an outgrowth of this ministry puts the Thought for the Day in the hands of over 1 million WhatsApp social-media users daily! The multilingual phone ministry is one of several highly successful and innovative methods of outreach used by TWR India, which celebrated its 40 th anniversary in January. We are grateful to our board and partners for the opportunities to extend our reach and to produce lasting spiritual fruit through mass media, TWR India CEO George Philip said during the commemorative activities. Our organization s standing and track record have been built largely on their projects. In fact, a conference bringing together international and national partners the latter group representing more than 20,000 churches and associations across India was one of the highlights of the activities. Another was the National Meet, at which over 2,000 people, many wearing distinctive cultural dress and speaking their native languages, gathered in the southeastern city of Chennai to praise God for 40 years of media ministry. During the anniversary events, another milestone was announced: Sambalpuri became the 100 th language in which TWR India ministers to the subcontinent s 1.3 billion people. The ministry is multifaceted, producing 140 audio programs and television programs, an internet radio station called Crosswave aimed at youth, smartphone apps and digital media bearing biblical messages. Among the most exciting of TWR India s innovations are Radio Home Groups. There are 2,677 of these groups across the country bringing believers together weekly to grow their faith by listening to digital programs, discussing the messages and completing study materials. The impact? Here s an example: I was a temple priest, and I connected with TWR India as a secret believer. Today, I boldly lead 22 Radio Home Groups. 10 twr MAGAZINE

11 10-year-old Africa station is crucial The recent massacre of 19 churchgoers in central Nigeria is a grim illustration of the critical need for TWR s West Africa Transmitting Station. Turning 10 years old this year, WATS broadcasts the gospel over AM airwaves to a potential audience of 190 million in many languages, including English, French, Hausa, Igbo, Twi and Yoruba. Its diverse programming serves large numbers of believers in the region but also areas where other religious groups are hostile to Christianity and where, as in the Nigeria attack, extremists resort to violence. where I m getting the full explanation of the Bible. It is very wonderful. Continue to pray for our country. The transmitter building was built with cement-block bricks handmade by a team of local laborers led by WATS Station Director Garth Kennedy. Kennedy and his wife, Fiona, were the first TWR missionaries to serve at WATS. Kennedy recalled, It took years and years of planning. It is a miracle. The aim was to take the gospel to the people and to get involved with the community. "As a Muslim, this is where I'm getting the full explanation of the Bible..." WATS is celebrating 10 years of broadcasting with gratitude to the Lord, said Abdoulaye Sangho, TWR international director for West and Central Africa. Most FM stations in the region are located and limited to larger cities, but only WATS is dedicated to go beyond and reach rural areas, desert spaces, places where Islam is predominant, and so on. Through its relevant, culturally sensitive programs, the transmitter strives to bring hope to the seeker, encouragement to the new believer and training for seasoned Christians. A listener in Nigeria called the response team to say, You are really helping us to understand the Bible. As a Muslim, this is Plans are underway to obtain a second license for AM, also called medium-wave, broadcasting. Once attained, it will be a full-year project to ship the transmitter, generator and the antennae-tuning networks, said James Burnett, one of the TWR engineers involved in the project. Another part of the project will be the installation and building alterations to erect the tower and do the testing as well as commissioning the transmitter. Burnett asked for prayers that the delicate and lengthy negotiations with the government for the second license will be concluded soon. twr.org 11
