2 BECAUSE you gave EXTENDING THE REACH OF THE GOOD NEWS POWERED-UP SHINE 800 REACHES FARTHER After a four-year project made possible by many TWR donors and volunteers to upgrade our transmitter on the island of Bonaire, we installed and commissioned the transmitter in January It was a meaningful and special ceremony to celebrate all that God did to provide for gospel broadcasts across a wider swath of the Caribbean and Latin America, including the entire nation of Cuba! Now the project is ongoing, known as Shine 800 AM Bonaire and working to keep broadcasts on the air in six languages. This year you gave $109,931 to the Shine project. The moving feedback of our listeners is pouring in from people like this Cuban who wrote, I listen to your radio programs often, and I really like them. I m very happy because I came to know Christ. HOPE OF CHRIST FOR THE MIDDLE EAST It s hard to estimate your impact in the kingdom of God when you support TWR s broadcasts to the Middle East. Reaching across more than 20 countries in the Arabic language, the Word of God on the air provides an oasis to believers who crave spiritual food. Seekers who have not found answers in their inherited religion begin to understand the gospel and gain a biblical worldview. A listener of the Hope for Syria program wrote, I wait for your program from week to week. I am learning how to live according to the Bible more and more. I m glad you are on the radio because our electricity goes out all the time. This way I can always be with you. In 2017, the number of listener responses to just five of TWR s Arabic programs totaled 76,423, and those responses represent many more who are listening. Thank you! CARY OFFICE FIRE RESTORATION A fire at TWR s North America headquarters in December 2017 destroyed part of our building, while the remaining work spaces sustained heavy smoke damage. Insurance covered many of the losses, plus TWR s donors responded so generously that the restoration of our building is scheduled to be complete in September We praise God that none of our global broadcast operations were affected by the fire, and after working in temporary quarters for a few months, we are deeply grateful to be back to work in our newly upgraded spaces. Thank you for giving over $308,000 to make this possible! GOSPEL FOR CHINA S UNREACHED For several years now, TWR s China ministries team has been developing 60 dramatized Bible stories for 106 of China s remaining unreached people groups. The goal is to share the gospel in 15 of the most commonly spoken languages among them. Called SON-Lift because we want to lift up the name of Jesus with stories about his life, each episode includes the selected Bible drama, an explanation of the gospel, a prayer and music. Several of the language productions are complete and being aired by shortwave radio and other media platforms. A key component of the strategy is to partner with church members inside China who personally distribute media players loaded with the programs in the homes of the unreached. It is through this face-to-face contact and hearing the gospel on the players that people are meeting Jesus Christ for the first time. Some have given their hearts to him! 3 president s column by Lauren Libby, President/CEO I'm pleased to introduce you to two exciting aspects of TWR s ministry one that is mainly internal (though always with an outwardlooking mission) and the other external. Let s start with the internal. We are privileged to have four specialized, integrated ministries within the TWR family: TWR Women of Hope, the TWR Men s Ministry Initiative, RiverCross and TWR MOTION. Each of them addresses key ministry areas crucial to the Body of Christ. Every day, TWR Women of Hope s signature radio program provides advice for listeners spiritual and practical lives. I have listened to women in Africa, Europe, Latin America and Asia extol the value of this vital ministry. Dr. Peggy Banks, since becoming global ministry director of TWR Women of Hope in 2016, has brought a unique perspective to training leaders for the movement. RiverCross exists to help abused children in Africa and elsewhere overcome deeprooted trauma. Using audio drama to engage children and those who care for them, this strategic ministry fills a huge void in bringing healing, hope and encouragement. Cindy Finley leads this key expanding ministry. The TWR Men s Ministry Initiative utilizes media, small groups and leader training to help men grow in their relationships with the Lord, their wives and families, and their communities. In the words of Lonnie Berger, the founder of Every Man A Warrior and director of the initiative, This ministry is in response to the prayers of hundreds of thousands of women asking God to touch the hearts of men! TWR MOTION represents the ministry s trailblazing incursion into visual media. Led by Candace Mackie, MOTION is capitalizing on the booming popularity of video to connect unreached audiences with local believers. Externally, TWR is privileged to have been granted permission to broadcast with a powerful 200,000-watt facility to Central Asia and Northwest China. The Silk Road Transmitter will touch an additional 200 million people in these spiritually hungry regions. The Uyghur areas of western China are a key focus, as are the Islamic populations of Central Asia. We are witnessing God provide the $593,000 necessary to build this new transmission site. Please join us in praying for this once-in-alifetime opportunity, for which over half the funds have already been provided. We are living in confused, twisted and dangerous times! Amid the challenges, TWR remains committed to proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ to the whole world by mass media so that lasting fruit is produced. Come join us. Something was given for something received: horses, camels, jewels, metals, carpets, spices and, of course, silk, along with philosophies, religions even diseases. One thing received from outside was Islam, which became the dominant religion of Central Asia and sometimes mixed with folk traditions. In the past century, however, these so-called stan countries Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan have suffered under exploitation as their natural resources were given up and poverty received. Where is the Church in all of this? There are strict regulations in place for Christians, and those who own a Bible or gather in small groups for worship can be followed, harassed, searched and questioned. Some are imprisoned, and heavy fines impossible to pay are common. But persecution is having an ironic effect on the Church the number of believers in Jesus is growing! Thirty years ago, there were hundreds, but today there are thousands, and TWR s listeners in Central Asia secretly indicate to us that they love to hear the Word of God on the radio. It is for many the only safe way to study the Bible and grow in faith. TWR has been broadcasting into Central Asia for many years, and now we have the opportunity to exchange a defunct transmitter WILL YOU JOIN US? In addition to the stans, the 200,000-watt AM transmitter will reach into Northwest China and a few surrounding countries. We call it the Silk Road Transmitter and will pack its program lineup with broadcasts like Power in Persecution, The Way of Righteousness, The Christian Home and Christian Youth. TWR s ministry director for Central Asia shared this: One day, when I was telling a single mother about Christ, I said, God loves you so much that he gave his only Son for the atonement of sins. When she heard this news of the heavenly Father s love, she burst into tears and said, Does he really love me for who I am? TWR hopes to have the Silk Road Transmitter on the air by early The atheistic propaganda that aired over this radio frequency and antenna for decades while the Soviet Union ruled the region will be exchanged for the gospel of Jesus Christ. Please pray for the funds still to be raised and the installation process. 5 You re probably well aware that TWR has expanded its outreach over the years reaching more countries, adding more national partners and broadcast power, ministering in more languages. But did you know that the ministry s internal structure has grown, too? Meet the integrated ministries. Or you might think of them as TWR s family of ministries. (See a profile of each on the following pages.) God has given TWR the unique opportunity to reach the world for Christ by mass media in 230 languages and dialects, said Tim Klingbeil, TWR vice president for North America. One of our greatest challenges is providing the biblically based content that meets the unique needs of our audiences from many cultures and areas of the world. By developing TWR ministry content through our integrated ministries that ministers directly to the needs of men, women, children, unreached people groups and others, TWR is able to impact those specific audiences. ministry runs in our family A brief introduction to several of TWR s integrated ministries twr.org 5

6 TWR Women of Hope twrwomenofhope.org In many parts of the world, barriers to the gospel are extra high for women. In addition to geographic and political barriers, women often face religious and cultural limitations on learning, on free movement, on engagement with others. Amira* was told that women have no will and only half a mind. You think I can feel respect and love from God? asked Amira, an Algerian 23-year-old who has been corresponding with the TWR Women of Hope team. I feel already that you were sent to me by him. Do you think I m worth something like your Lord says I am? For 20 years, this ministry has answered that question with a resounding Yes! through its Women of Hope radio program, now in 73 languages. The broadcast is undergirded by a global prayer network focused on a monthly prayer calendar that is translated into over 90 languages for use in more than 120 countries. Vaulting over national borders, Women of Hope introduces women many tuning in secretly to the gospel and teaches practical life skills and spiritual truth. Topics range widely, from family health and hygiene to harmful cultural practices and human trafficking. If they re not discipled, Jesus can become just another of many gods, said Peggy Banks, global director of the ministry. That s why the discipling from Women of Hope going deeper, taking them through an understanding of the Bible is so important to us. And the ministry s impact keeps growing. Leadership training has become a major emphasis, and a program focused exclusively on discipleship is being developed. *Not her real name TWR MOTION twrmotion.org Video is everywhere you look today and fulfills all kinds of functions, but for TWR s visual-media ministry, the medium has a very focused but vital role to play. We re really seeing the need for short online videos that can be used on social media to connect a seeker somebody who s seeking religious truth or has a bunch of questions or they re just dissatisfied in their life with a church planter or local believers, said Candace Mackie, ministry director of TWR MOTION. We want to work with disciple makers to develop video content to use primarily online, but they might also use it offline as a discipleship tool. An ambitious animated video series telling the Bible story from creation through Christ was the perfect debut project when MOTION was launched in January 2017 as a TWR integrated ministry. The growing MOTION team had been getting established for several years prior to that and had created a host of promotional videos for TWR, but for this project, it worked with church planters in North Africa to produce a series that addressed the specific needs of an unreached, oral-based culture. Mackie said the series, whose name is withheld because of security concerns in the region, was successfully rolled out on Facebook. The showings of the three- to five-minute episodes were followed with local believers gathering to discuss the episodes and answer questions in online live sessions which, she added, sometimes morphed into worship! Consultations are underway about developing a streamlined process for translating and adapting the series for use in several other Muslim-majority countries. 6 twr MAGAZINE

If we want to stop the violence against women and children, we must change the hearts of men! said Lonnie Berger, director of TWR s men s initiative. Men have an undeniably severe impact upon the lives of those around them. TWR sees this firsthand, recognizing that much of what is done in women s or children s ministry can be either hindered or helped by surrounding men. The TWR Men s Ministry Initiative was formed in response to this issue. A synchronization of the ministries Every Man A Warrior and Champions Arise, this combined outreach saturates men with biblical basics to pull them into a deeper relationship with God. With Champions Arise serving as the radio programming air force, Every Man A Warrior is the boots on the ground discipleship curriculum. For now, the ministry is focused on launching Every Man A Warrior around the world. So far, the curriculum has reached 25 countries in five languages, with four additional languages under development. Berger emphasized a key to the growth and success of this ministry: the diligent prayers of women. Women have prayed this ministry into existence, he said. God continues to graciously answer the prayers of these women, resulting in what Berger describes as an army of Christian men who are discipling other men. RiverCross twrrivercross.org When seeking to aid orphans and vulnerable children, many turn to meeting victims physical needs. While this is necessary and even beneficial, it addresses only half the problem. If their heart doesn t get healing from the trauma they ve experienced, they re not able to experience the fullness of life Christ has intended for them, said RiverCross Global Ministry Director Cindy Finley. RiverCross seeks to bring emotional and spiritual healing to these children. Between 70 and 80 percent of the world consists of oral-preference listeners, who learn best through songs, narratives and parables. To reach this story-centric audience, RiverCross has developed audio dramas, taking heart-healing messages and wrapping them in the power of a captivating story. Holding Esther was the first drama produced, distinctly created to equip the caregivers of traumatized children. After it experienced great success, caregivers requested another drama, but this one specific to the children in their care. Jabota Bridge was created in response to that appeal. Currently in postproduction, eight pilot episodes are scheduled to be completed before the end of this year. After undergoing field testing and critiques from partners in South Africa, the new series will be ready to meet and aid in the healing of the children it was created for.
