We want to thank Ilomae Meling and Joan Turner for their term on the board. I am looking forward to the next two years as the president of WISWO with the help of the WISWO Board and all of the congregational units. Yours in Christ- Marlyce Hauge Too Blessed to be Stressed I m too blessed to be stressed and too anointed to be disappointed. I refuse to be discouraged, to be sad or to cry. I refuse to be downhearted, and here s the reason why; I have a God who is almighty, who is sovereign and supreme. I have a God who loves me and I am on his team. He is all wise and powerful, Jesus is his name. Though everything else is changeable, my God remains the same. I refuse to be beaten or defeated. My eyes are on my God. He has promised to be with me as through this life I ve trod. I am looking past my circumstances to heaven s throne above. My prayers have reached the heart of God and I am resting in his love. I give thanks to Him in everything. My eyes are on his face. The battle is his, the victory is mine, and He will help me win the race. I repeat: I m too blessed to be distressed!

4 P a g e 4 NEWS FROM YOUR WISWO TREASURER Greetings from your WISWO Treasurer: As you know February 1, 2018 started a new year with a new treasurer. Remember the assessment fee is now $ Speaking of assessments, they are due from each unit. They help to defray the convention costs and are very necessary. Let s see if we could have 100% from you-$15.00 is the amount. Remember our scholarship fund. We want it to keep growing so that maybe we can contionue to help more than one seminarian each year. Please use the transmittal forms to send contributions so they are recorded properly and keep a copy for your records. You have an instruction sheet to help you know when to send the offerings. Synodical Convention offering was $ 3, God's richest blessings on you all! Dixie Petersen, Treasurer MESSAGE FROM Cindy Wells Time is of the essence! Please consider supporting our first-ever partner project with our Chilean companions--to bring as many women as possible their Women's National Convention this November. The theme is creation--an important component of our time. Chile is a very long distanced and isolated country. While this makes efforts toward collaboration and solidarity both particularly important and particularly difficult, the result of coalescing prophetic voices to enhance social justice renders this small church a dynamic church! The Western Iowa Synod is invited to share in this endeavor by supporting transportation, registration, etc. costs for a church whose membership is comprised primarily of the vulnerable though mighty among us. And, the sooner we can receive your support the better as planning needs are before us. Please prayerfully consider your participation and send all contributions by Sept. 30 to the Western Iowa Synod with Chilean Women's Empowerment in the memo and mail to 318 E. 5th St., Storm Lake, IA Contact Cindy Wells, WIS Director for Global Mission, with any questions or needs you may have (cindy.wells@wisynod.org; Ext. 441). Machinimas gracias (Thank you very much) y Dios les bendiga (and God bless you all)! 5 P a g e 5 STEWARDSHIP CELEBRATION! 2017 STEWARDSHIP REPORT AT WISWO CONVENTION Sixty church units reported this year of the results of their work from May of 2016 to May of this year. Once again, the WISWO Board is excited to report of the long list of works of love where our units manifested the gifts of the Holy Spirit in our midst. CONGRATULATIONS AND THANK YOU! GOD BLESS YOUR COMMITMENT TO BE VESSELS OF JESUS CHRIST TO OUR HURTING WORLD! Thank you to our strong active units. you are exciting! Thank you to our small circles still functioning with fewer members. You make our hearts joyful! Thank you to our tiny cells of two or three women and sometimes only one woman still carrying out Christ s call to Go, and do likewise. You humble us with your commitment to tell of Christ s love to the struggling. We celebrate each and every one of you. Thank you for sending in your reports that this celebration is possible. More than 100 charities and ministries were given funds from our units. The total given this year was $69,422. The national safety net is at risk, and more of our neighbors will live with food insecurity not knowing how they will feed their family that day. Our world is also seeing extreme poverty as the data currently finds 14.7% of the world s population living on $1.25 per day. Data from 2014 tell us that over 48 million Americans live in poverty where a family of four has an annual household income under $23,850. Churchwide support of ELCA World Hunger totals over $21 million enabling 349 projects in 46 U.S. states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico as well as in 61 additional countries. Churchwide, we are making an important impact on hunger in the world. We are invited to Join the Journey in recognition of the 500 th Anniversary of the Reformation to come together and grow our support of our ELCA World Hunger. You are invited to visit our display and take resources home. Also, remember to support our Good Gifts program through the ELCA. Your funds will buy double the number of goats, chickens, cows etc. than the highly advertised and commercialized charities. Also, our own 225 missionaries will be bringing the Gospel along with the animals to the recipients. MAKE YOUR GIFTS WORK HARDER. Use GOOD GIFTS. The following are the totals of our combined work to be sent to our partners who work closely with us. WOW! God bless the hands who have worked so hard! 6 P a g e 6 DISCIPLESHIP This fall our Gather Bible Study is on the Apostles Creed. Bible study author is Julia Seymour, pastor of Lutheran Church of Hope, Anchorage, Alaska. Julia writes: For our life of faith together, creeds are more than just words. They are vessels for carrying one another through doubt, joy and sorrow. Session titles are: I believe in God I believe in Jesus Christ.I believe in the Holy Spirit. If you do not have a subscription to Gather magazine you can go to: and click on subscribe. Kim Campbell and Kathy Landgraf RESOLUTIONS 2017 Commitment to Taking Action to Reduce World Hunger WHEREAS 795 million people around the world, that s 1 in 10, can t access the food they need to live active healthy lives, and WHEREAS 1 billion people live in extreme poverty on less than $1.25 per day. That s 14.5% of the world s population, and WHEREAS in 2014, more than 48 million people in the United States were unsure where their next meal might come from, and WHEREAS 46.7 million Americans were living in poverty in 2014 this means that for a family of four, their annual household income was below $23,850, and WHEREAS in 2015 your support of ELCA World Hunger totaled over $21 million which enabled 349 projects in 46 U.S. states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico as well as in 61 additional countries, and WHEREAS the ELCA is making an important impact on hunger in the world, and is inviting us to Join the Journey in recognition of the 500 th Anniversary of the Reformation to come together to lift up the church s hunger and poverty ministry, therefore WHEREAS congregations in the Western Iowa Synod are experiencing an I BE IT RESOLVED that the women of the Western Iowa Synod prayerfully build the awareness of world hunger and act on this awareness by supporting elca.org/hunger, ELCA good gifts, and local food ministries to commemorate and celebrate the Reformation. We invite the Holy Spirit to empower us with prayer and caring hearts in helping our neighbors with this urgent hunger issue. The Western Iowa Synodical Women s Board reports this resolution and recommends its adoption. Supporting Candidates for Pastoral Ordination Potentially for Western Iowa Synod Congregations WHEREAS increasing number of pastoral vacancies especially in smaller churches, and currently 50% of our congregations are in a shared pastor status, and WHEREAS the current rostered pastors who are nearing retirement at an age of over 60 is 55% in the Western Iowa Synod while churchwide over the ELCA, 4000 new pastors will be needed in the next 10 years just to fill vacancies, and WHEREAS the viability of congregations is threatened without pastoral leadership and ministry resulting in loss of members as well as the closing of churches, and WHEREAS tuition costs at Lutheran seminaries has become high as well as cost of living for students has grown resulting in seminary students becoming burdened with student loans in the zone of $120,000 and more, and

7 P a g e 7 WHEREAS more seminary students are in mid-work life and taking on huge student debt discourages their entry into the ministry, therefore BE IT RESOLVED that The Western Iowa Synod Women s Organization commit to raising $15,000 by 2020 for scholarships and student aid for seminary students from the Western Iowa Synod Lutheran community and that we encourage our congregations to also engage in commitments to fund seminary students. 10 P a g e 10 Reports From Your Triennial Convention Delegates Being a new delegate to both the Triennial convention and gathering, I have to admit I was nervous. I didn t know what to expect in regards to others in attendance, business meetings, break-out sessions, etc. Once I arrived in Minneapolis and realized that during the convention portion we were seated according to our synods I felt more comfortable. The meeting was interesting with the votes necessary for the open positions and also for the resolutions presented. It was an experience to see how items are decided for that working part of WELCA. When the gathering began I was amazed at the number of women in Women of the ELCA in! The break-out sessions gave some food for thought, a chance to connect with other women of the same faith and provided direction in my personal life. Worshipping and sharing communion with 3,300 other women still sends chills through me as I reflect on that time meeting new sisters in Christ and renewing friendships already formed. Thank you for the opportunity to attend the Tenth Triennial Convention/Gathering of the Women of the ELCA. Even though it promises to be hotter than this year, I look forward to hopefully attending the Eleventh Triennial Convention/Gathering in Phoenix, Arizona in From Kim Campbell What a great week we had in Minneapolis attending the 10 th Triennial Convention and Gathering. I spent the first part of the week as a delegate at the convention, our new president, Lisa Plorin is full of energy, Karen Voris, who we met at our convention this summer was elected to the board for a second term. Presiding Bishop Eaton, spoke to us at the convention and the Gathering, I am always uplifted by her words. The speakers at the gathering, Kelly Fryer, Lemah Gbowee, and Rev. Alexia Salvatierra opened our eyes to the injustices that take place in our country every day. In whose corner are we being asked to stand? Their words were sometimes hard to hear, how can we make a difference? I hope over the next few months, to find the answer to that in my heart. We closed out the Gathering with an uplifting worship service, it left me with a connection to all the women attending. I have to mention also the Nordic Evening Prayer Service at Central Lutheran, was the perfect way to end the day. I am grateful that I had the opportunity to spend the week with a great group of women for Western Iowa. From Sue Boblit What a joy and a privilege to be a part of this convention as a voting member from the Western Iowa Synod. Thank you for the opportunity! The work and the ministry of Women of the ELCA is remarkable as they work to address the needs of hunger, education, health care, and human trafficking around the world. It is God s work and our hands that bring about change - advocacy, solar power, quilts, school kits, and scholarships. Wow! I give thanks to God for the women of this Church, for their courage to be bold women of faith! In 2020 the Women of the ELCA will gather in Phoenix YOU need to be there! There is nothing quite like being with 2400 women for Bible study and worship or to share in the joy of ministry. Making quilts together, sharing stories of faith, learning about life in Liberia and coming together around the Word to wrestle with the gospel of Jesus. Are we to be nice or good? How do we love our neighbor when we don t agree? What does it mean to be a bold woman? Why do we need to speak truth to power? Who are the Women of the ELCA in Western Iowa? What are we called to be about? This is the challenge of the theme All Anew. How are we made new each day in our baptism and how will we as Women of the ELCA in Western Iowa continue to be open to being made new in the communities where we live and serve God? From Pastor L. Halaas

11 P a g e 11 We were continually challenged and inspired while attending the Triennial and Gathering. We often heard about Justice and Human Trafficking. Using the theme of All Anew, speakers challenged us to transform our lives to practice justice in our personal lives. We were challenged to educate others of ways to avoid the traps of young people getting into human trafficking. I admired the person who had the determination to find the connections to resources to get solar power for operating Phebe hospital in Liberia. The speaker who spoke of interruptions showed how Jesus had constant interruptions in his life, but used these to help those he met. We were challenged to do the same. As a first-timer, I was glad to be able to interact with national board members and others across the country. Thanks for the opportunity.
