2 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time September 18, 2016 Stewardship: Decisiveness in Crisis Luke Our Gospel story records Jesus teaching through a parable. Generally, Biblical parables are complex and difficult to interpret. There are more than 72 different parables in the Gospels. The simplest way to describe the parable is that it is a story that illustrates the teachings of Christ. Luke s Gospel records the largest number of parables. Furthermore, Luke often uses the parable to contrast the natural order and the spiritual order. This particular parable is no different. It recounts a parable about a shrewd and prudent steward accused by his master of squandering his property. When the steward knew that his master would expect him to give a full account of his stewardship, he shrewdly reduces the promissory notes of the debtors of his master. Even the master had become impressed with the shrewdness of his steward. He had been decisive in his crisis. Jesus makes the observation that the children of this worldly generation are more prudent than the children of the light. The teachings of Jesus suggest that the good stewards of eternal dwelling in the Kingdom of God have much to learn from the shrewdness and prudence of the children of this worldly generation. Jesus concludes, If, therefore, you are not trustworthy with dishonest wealth, who will trust you with true wealth? If you are not trustworthy with what belongs to another, who will give you what is yours? No one can serve two masters. Each one of us is called to be good, prudent and even shrewd stewards with our gifts whether worldly or spiritual. In either case, we are called to be decisive even in crisis. God calls us to place the things of His Kingdom above those of this world. Truly, no servant can serve two masters. Jesus said, He will either hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. God calls each of us to become His good and faithful servant. Alleluia! Alleluia! Amen. - Rev. Pastor s Column Being Good Stewards About this time last year, our parish began a Stewardship campaign. The purpose was not to raise money although in the past stewardship was used for that purpose. The purpose instead is to remind us that all we have and are is God s gift to us. Do you believe this? When I came to see and believe this, it led me to gratitude. My priesthood, comes partly in gratitude for God s help in my life during times of trials, but also in response to all that God has given me. So our Stewardship campaign is simply the raising of the awareness of what God has done for us, and our response in gratitude to Him. Abraham, in the Old Testament, offered to God a portion of his first fruits from the harvest. It was the belief that their harvest, even though they had to do the hard work of tilling the soil, planting the seed and watering the crop, was ultimately a miracle. It was God who caused the growth and in gratitude, a portion of their first fruits were given back to God. Similarly, in the coming weeks, I ll lead in the reflection of how we might use the gift of our time, the gift of our talent and also the gift of our treasure. What portion of our time, talent and treasure can we joyfully offer back to Him? Many of you participated last year when we kicked off our Stewardship campaign. Was it helpful to your spiritual life? As we reintroduce the Stewardship campaign again this year, I invite you to examine the many ways God has blessed you. Count your blessings and give thanks, for God has been good to us. Catechetical Sunday - The word "catechetical" comes from the root word "catechesis" which means "to echo, or resound." Catechesis is the act of resounding or bringing the Church's teachings to the world. A catechist, then, is one who teaches in the name of the Church. So each year, on the 3 rd Sunday of September, the U.S. Church celebrates a ritual to recognize and commission our catechists for service to God's church. At St. Anne, we'll celebrate this on 9/18, following their 9am Sunday School, at the 10:30am Mass. Thank you, Catechists! - Fr. Dan
