Dear friends To all my friends When I was a child I used to look forward to the end of the Summer term because I knew that it marked the start of 6 full weeks without school. Those school holidays seemed like an eternity. Yet, after a few weeks, I would start wishing that I could go back to school again. I missed the structure to my life that school gave me. Churches don t shut down like schools but many of their activities stop through August. This is partly because people are away and it is easier to have a break than find cover. However, it is also a recognition that everyone benefits from having an annual breather. The Old Testament is very specific that we all need to take regular rests from our activities. This is to enable us to be replenished both physically and spiritually. The gospel tells us of several occasions when Jesus would draw away to rest and pray. We need to do the same. Of course God never takes a break he is there for us 24/7 on 365 days a year (366 in a leap year) so I hope that you will take this month of relative inactivity as an opportunity to spend time with your Heavenly Father. Discover for yourself the truth of Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him (Psalm 34:8). Blessings Vivienne Hatton Please let Bill or Vivienne know if any member of the church family is ill so that we can ensure they receive the appropriate pastoral care. Editor s Note Iunderstand the plurality weekend away in Scarborough was a great success and a good time was had by all. More on this in the September issue. I had a thoroughly enjoyable week off at the beginning of July to watch the second week of the tennis. I was delighted to watch Andy Murray winning his second Wimbledon title well done to him! Luke 18 verse 27 But how can I know where to go Lord, Or be sure of the way to proceed? Acknowledge me always, then your paths Will be straight if you follow my lead. Proverbs 3 verse 6 But Lord, I m too tired and weary; I can t help but feel depressed. Then child, cast your burdens upon me And I promise that I ll give you rest. Matthew 11 verse 28 Oh Lord, I so often feel lonely: I don t want to face life solo. Fear not, for my child, I am with you Watching over wherever you go. Joshua 1 verse 9 Lord, I can t help but feel I won t manage; I don t have the means to succeed My child, how oft must I tell you That I will supply all your needs? 8 The European Union Referendum Vote FRIDAY 24TH JUNE This morning the Archbishops of Canterbury and York issued this joint statement following the European Referendum vote. The statement reads... 8 On Thursday, millions of people from across the United Kingdom voted in the Referendum, and a majority expressed a desire that Britain s future is to be outside the European Union. The outcome of this referendum has been determined by the people of this country. It is now the responsibility of the Government, with the support of Parliament, to take full account of the outcome of the referendum, and, in the light of this, decide upon the next steps. This morning the Prime Minister has offered a framework for when this process might formally begin. The vote to withdraw from the European Union means that now we must all reimagine both what it means to be the United Kingdom in an interdependent world and what values and virtues should shape and guide our relationships with others. As citizens of the United Kingdom, whatever our views during the referendum campaign, we must now unite in a common task to build a generous and forward looking country, contributing to human flourishing around the world. We must remain hospitable and compassionate, builders of bridges and not barriers. Many of those living among us and alongside us as neighbours, friends and work colleagues come from overseas and some will feel a deep sense of insecurity. We must respond by offering reassurance, by cherishing our wonderfully diverse society, and by affirming the unique contribution of each and every one. The referendum campaign has been vigorous and at times has caused hurt to those on one side or the other. We must therefore act with humility and courage being true to the principles that make the very best of our nation. Unity, hope and generosity will enable us to overcome the period of transition that will now happen, and to emerge confident and successful. The opportunities and challenges that face us as a nation and as global citizens are too significant for us to settle for less. As those who hope and trust in the living God let us pray for all our leaders, especially for Prime Minster David Cameron in his remaining months in office. We also pray for leaders across Europe, and around the world, as they face this dramatic change. Let us pray especially that we may go forward to build a good United Kingdom that, though relating to the rest of Europe in a new way will play its part amongst the nations in the pursuit of the common good throughout the world. Bob Ardley
The result of the European Union Referendum won t just affect the UK It will have a huge impact on the lives of the farmers and workers in developing countries who grow our food, too. How that plays out positive or negative is in part down to all of us. Put simply, as the UK begins to reshape its relationship with the EU, it will need to renegotiate how it trades with other countries, both in Europe and the rest of the world. That could put farmers and workers in a vulnerable position. Too often in the past, trade has been structured and regulated in a way that has given too much to those with power and wealth and too little to those who are powerless and poor. Your support is needed now more than ever. Fairtrade has shown that trade and business can be incredible forces for good, if the benefits are shared fairly. That way, everyone involved has the chance to earn a decent living, and protect their health, rights and the environment. Over the coming months, and even years, we will need to work hard to ensure our politicians keep in mind the interests of poor farmers and workers as much as our own. Together we will need to support them to get a fairer deal, so that they can send their children to school and invest in their futures, build strong communities and withstand the ravages of climate change. I know that all of us who believe in a fair and just world can come together and fight harder than ever for exactly that. As always, thank you for your support. Michael Gidney Chief Executive, Fairtrade Foundation. Bob Ardley 9
ASK THE CURATE This month the series of an ABC of the C of E continues with the letter "F". If you have heard any terms which you did not readily understand please let Bill Dewing know and I will try to include it in the series. FREEWILL OFFERINGS The method of giving to the Church which people commit money to the work of the mission of the Church on a regular basis. the Church can claim a rebate from the Inland Revenue if the giver pays Income Tax and therefore Freewill Offerings are a tax efficient way of giving. FRONTAL A panel of cloth, wood or metal often ornamented with embroidery, carving or enamel, which is placed in front of the altar. Frontals are usually changeable and coloured so that they can agree with the liturgical colour of the season or day. FUNDAMENTALISM The term applied to the profession of strict adherence to orthodoxy in the matter of Biblical inspiration. In the extreme it would profess that every word in the Bible is literally true as written. GENERAL CONFESSION The prayer of confession said by the whole congregation as part of the penitential section of liturgy. The Church of England provides for both "General" and "Private" confession. Everyone is exhorted to confess their sins of as part of the body corporate, but the C of E holds that "private" confession is a matter for individual consciences, stating that "ALL may, SOME should, NONE must". GENERAL THANKSGIVING In the Book of Common Prayer, the General Thanksgiving is that prayer set to be used before the two final prayers of the Litany, Morning or Evening Prayer. It is so named to distinguish it from the particular Thanksgivings which follow (e.g. for rain). GENEVA BIBLE The English translation of the Bible first published in Geneva in 1560, with notes were written from a Calvinistic point of view. GENUFLEXION A momentary kneeling on the right knee with the 10
An ABC of the C of E body erect used in the Western Church as a ceremonial reverence when passing before the Sacrament. GLEBE The land devoted to the maintenance of the incumbent of the parish. Until Stipends were centralised and equalised, it was the rents and/or tithes from the Glebe which formed the main income of the incumbent. GLORIA IN EXCELSIS A 4th century hymn, echoing the song which the angels sang at the birth of Christ, originally sung as part of morning prayer but now incorporated into the Eucharist. GODPARENTS Witnesses to a Christian Baptism, who assume the responsibilities for the Christian upbringing of the newly Baptised. In the case of infant Baptism it is the Godparents who also make the promises of renunciation, faith and obedience on behalf of themselves and the child. GOSPEL 1. The central content of the Christian faith, literally "Good News". 2. The title given to the genre of Books in which the Christian Gospel is set forth i.e. the Gospels of Mark, Matthew, Luke and John. The words and Deeds of Christ are only found in theses books. 3. In the Eucharistic liturgy the reading of a passage from one of the Gospels is read aloud after the readings from all other parts of the Bible, i.e. in the place of honour. As further marks of respect the Gospel extract is traditionally read by a Deacon or Priest and the congregation stands. GOTHIC VESTMENTS A style of Eucharistic vestments introduced in the middle of the 19th century and supposed to represent mediaeval patterns. The chasuble took the form of an arch with orphreys in the shape of a cross emphasising the arch form. Prior to the introduction of the Gothic style chasubles were generally in the shape of a violin hence the name "fiddlebacked." Bill Dewing 11
THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH The 2016 Summer Olympics officially known as the Games of the XXXI Olympiad, and commonly known as Rio 2016, is a major international event. The 2016 Olympic Games are due to take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 5 to 21 August The life cycle of the Olympic Games begins with the submission of candidacies to host the Games. This is followed by the election of the Host City seven years before the Games are scheduled to be held. From the very start of the procedure, the IOC works closely with the local organisers to ensure their project best matches their longterm sports, economic, social and environmental planning needs. Record numbers of countries are participating in a record number of sports. More than 10,500 athletes from 206 National Olympic Committees (NOCs), including first time entrants Kosovo and South Sudan, are scheduled to take part. With 306 sets of medals, the games will feature 28 Olympic sports including rugby sevens and golf, which were added by the International Olympic Committee in These sporting events will take place at 33 venues in the host city and at 5 venues in the cities of São Paulo (Brazil's largest city), Belo Horizonte, Salvador, Brasília (Brazil's capital), and Manaus. The host city of Rio de Janeiro was announced at the 121st IOC Session held in Copenhagen, Denmark, on 2 October Rio will become the first South American city to host the Summer Olympics, and these will be the first games to be held in a Portuguese-speaking country, the first since 1968 to be held in Latin America, and the first since 2000 (third overall) to be held in the Southern Hemisphere. No matter where the athletes of the 2016 Olympics go in the city of Rio de Janeiro, they can see Jesus. Standing high above this Brazilian city and anchored to a 2,310 foot high mountain called Corcovado is a 100 foot tall sculpture called Cristo Redentor (Christ the Redeemer). With arms spread wide, and weighing 635 tons, this massive figure is visible day and night from almost anywhere in the city. Christ the Redeemer is an Art Deco statue, created by Polish-French sculptor Paul Landowski and built by the Brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva Costa, in collaboration with the French engineer Albert Caquot. The face was created by the Romanian artist Gheorghe Leonida. A 12
symbol of Christianity across the world, the statue has also become a cultural icon of both Rio de Janeiro and Brazil, and is listed as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. It is made of reinforced concrete and soapstone, and was constructed between 1922 and In 2010, a massive restoration of the statue was undertaken. The statue was washed, the mortar and soapstone that cover the statue were replaced, the internal structure of iron was restored, and the monument was made waterproof. The statue was vandalised during renovation, wherein paint was sprayed along the arm. The mayor called the act "a crime against the nation". The culprits later apologized and presented themselves to the police. As comforting as this iconic concrete and soapstone sculpture may be to all who look up and see it, there is much greater comfort from the way the real Jesus sees us. In Psalm 34, David explained it like this: The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are attentive to their cry. He noted that when the righteous cry out for his help the Lord hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles. The Lord is close to the broken hearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. Just who are the righteous? Those of us who put our trust in Jesus, who himself is our righteousness. Our God oversees our lives, and hears the cries of those who put their trust in him. 15 VISION UPDATE Following the discussions at the APCM, Stainton s PCC has decided to change St Peter s and St Paul s vision statement to: Our vision is that within the next five years we will have helped God grow his kingdom by having: 1. Opened doors between us and our community and reached out to all who live in our parish; 2. Deepened our spirituality and our faith and 3. Increased our worshipping community. Towards that vision we have already started to build our relationship with the Methodists and initiated the growing Coffee and Kids drop-in. St Peter s vision has remained unchanged: Our vision is that within the next five years we shall: 1. Have a congregation growing in numbers and spirituality; 2. Have a building that can be used by the community; and 3. Be working with Christians of all denominations. In 2015/16 we introduced a series of community services which have been well-received and started the ecumenical Filling Station meeting. St Margaret s vision is also unchanged: Our vision is that within the next five years we will achieve: 1. Fellowship growth and expansion of worship. 2. Connection with children and young people. 3. Growth in spirituality and through this a growth in our faith. Our first steps were the introduction of All Age worship, the Kidz Club and the installation of the multi-media. We are already seeing the fruit of this with new families attending the church. I shall let you know what the PCCs have decided to do in year two towards our vision in the next magazine. Vivienne 15
