First Presbyterian Church 2230 Hariet St. Port Charlotte, FL Worship 10:00 a.m. (941) Rev. Terri Jo Crego January 6, 2019 Welcome to All We are delighted that you are here today and hope you have a meaningful worship experience. If you are worshipping with us for the first time, we extend a special welcome! Your presence is important to us, so we encourage you to fill out the Welcome Card and place it in the offering plate. Also, if you have a prayer need, please complete one of the Prayer Cards and place it in the offering plate or hand it to an usher. It will be our privilege to pray for you.

Welcome to First Presbyterian Church Preparation for Worship: As you enter the Sanctuary, please prepare your hearts and minds for worship and silence your mobile devices. The beginning of the prelude is a call to silent, personal preparation for the worship of God. May our worship open our hearts to God s love, our eyes to God sbeauty, our minds to God s truth, and our will to God s service. Chimes GATHERING AROUND THE WORD Greetings The grace of the Lord, Jesus Christ be with you. And also with you. Let us prepare our hearts and minds for worship. Prelude How Brightly Shines the Morning Star by Dietrich Buxtehude Welcome and Announcements Recognition of Betty Smith Call to Worship O come, let us worship the Lord and consider what wondrous things God has done: The Magi who study the heavens follow a guiding star! O come, let us worship the Lord and consider what wondrous things God has done: The people who live in the shadows see a glorious light! O come, let us worship the Lord and consider what wondrous things God has done: The Christ who embodies the Word unveils the hidden plan, making us joint heirs of the promise of salvation through the gospel! O come, let us worship the Lord, for God has done wondrous things! Introit What Star Is This That Shines So Bright? Chancel Choir *Please Stand, if able

Opening Prayer O Star-flinging God, whose light dances across eternity, dazzle us into your presence this new year. Open our hearts to the mystery of your love. Awaken us to your presence, knit into the ordinary. Reveal to us what is possible, but not yet present. Heal us, that we might be healers. Reconcile us to you and to ourselves, that our living might be reconciling. Stop us often, we pray, with news that is good, with hope that holds, with truth that transforms, with a Word tailored to this trail we're on. May the word of your grace guide our steps like the sun by day and the north star by night, as we travel into the gift of a new year. Amen. *Passing of the Peace *Hymn of Adoration We Three Kings of Orient Are Blue Hymnal #66 Invitation to Confession Prayer of Confession God of Wonder, you surround us with signs of your glory and surprise us with your presence, yet we often miss the marvels you place before us. God of light and darkness, we have seen the glimmer of your star-light beckoning to us, but we have turned away and followed other paths. We confess that we have not loved you with all our heart, with all our soul, with all our mind, and with all our strength. We have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. Forgive our dullness and make us alert to the ways you make yourself known, that we might be witnesses to your good news and proclaim your extravagant love. Assurance of Pardon (Silent Prayer of Confession) Arise! Shine! For your Light has come! In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. Our hearts rejoice for Christ is in our midst. *Congregational Response O Little Town of Bethlehem Blue Hymnal #44, verse 3

Service of Ordination and Installation 2019 Elders Deacons John Gamble *Barbara Edwards *Ernest Rose *Jean Heim *Laverne Sinkia *Sandee Pellerin Gay Sorensen *Donna Young *To Be Ordained Pastor: People: Pastor: People: Pastor: There are varieties of gifts, but it is the same Spirit who gives them. There are different ways of serving God, but it is the same Lord who is served. God works through each person in a unique way, but it is God s purpose that is accomplished. To each is given a gift of the Spirit to be used for the common good. Together we are the body of Christ, and individually members of it. We are called into the church of Jesus Christ by baptism, and marked as Christ s own by the Holy Spirit. This is our common calling, to be disciples and servants of our servant Lord. Within the community of the church, some are called to particular service as Deacons, as Ruling Elders, and as Teaching Elders. Ordination is Christ s gift to the church, assuring that his ministry continues among us providing for ministries of caring and compassion in the world, ordering the governance of the church, and preaching the Word and administering the sacraments.

Ruling Elder: Representing the one, holy, catholic and apostolic church, First Presbyterian Church now ordains and installs to the office of Deacon: Barbara Edwards, Jean Heim, Sandee Pellerin, and Donna Young; to the office of Ruling Elder: Ernest Rose and Lavern Sinkia. The church also now installs to active service those who have been previously ordained. To the office of Deacon, we install Gay Sorensen. To the office of Ruling Elder, we install John Gamble, all of whom you, by the work of the Holy Spirit, have chosen. Those preparing to be ordained or installed will present themselves before the congregation to answer the following questions by the Pastor: Questions for Those Being Ordained and Installed Do you trust in Jesus Christ your Savior, acknowledge him Lord of all and Head of the Church, and through Him believe in one God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit? Do you accept the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments to be, by the Holy Spirit, the unique and authoritative witness to Jesus Christ in the church universal, and God s word to you?

Do you sincerely receive and adopt the essential tenets of the Reformed faith as expressed in the confessions of our church as authentic and reliable expositions of what Scripture leads us to believe and do, and will you be instructed and led by those confessions as you lead the people of God? Will you fulfill your ministry in obedience to Jesus Christ, under the authority of Scripture, and be continually guided by our confessions? Will you be governed by our church s polity, and will you abide by its discipline? Will you be a friend among your colleagues in ministry, working with them, subject to the ordering of God s Word and Spirit? Will you in your own life seek to follow the Lord Jesus Christ, love your neighbors, and work for the reconciliation of the world? Do you promise to further the peace, unity, and purity of the Church? Will you pray for and seek to serve the people with energy, intelligence, imagination and love? For Ruling Elders: Will you be a faithful ruling elder, watching over the people, providing for their worship, nurture, and service? Will you share in government and discipline, serving in councils of the church, and in your ministry will you try to show the love and justice of Jesus Christ? For Deacons: Will you be a faithful deacon, teaching charity, urging concern, and directing the people s help to the friendless and those in need, and in your ministry will you try to show the love and justice of Jesus Christ?

When the Ruling Elders and Deacons elect have answered in the affirmative, a Ruling Elder shall stand with them before the congregation and shall ask the congregation to answer the following questions: Questions for the Congregation Do we, the members of this church, accept these people as ruling elders and deacons, chosen by God through the voice of this congregation to lead us in the way of Jesus Christ? Do we agree to pray for them, to encourage them, to respect their decisions, and to follow as they guide us, serving Jesus Christ, who alone is Head of the Church? Those to be ordained will kneel if able, for prayer and the laying on of hands. Pastor: Let us pray: Almighty God, in every age you have chosen servants to speak your word and lead your loyal people. We thank you for these people whom you have called to serve you. Give them special gifts to do their special work; and fill them with the Holy Spirit, so they may have the same mind that was in Christ Jesus, and be faithful disciples as long as they shall live. People: God of grace, who called us to a common ministry as ambassadors of Christ, trusting us with the message of reconciliation: give us courage and discipline to follow where your servants rightly lead us; that together we may declare your wonderful deeds and show your love to the world; through Jesus Christ the Lord of all. Amen. Pastor: All those kneeling, please stand. You are now Ruling Elders and Deacons in the church of Jesus Christ and for this congregation. Whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God through him. Amen.

PRAYER CARDS Today Following Worship After the worship service today, you will be privileged to draw a name of a member so that you can enclose that member into your prayer life. May God bless this holy journey. Please take one card from the white basket at the back of the church when leaving today. MODELING GENEROSITY THROUGH OUR OFFERING There are many practices we do well in the church which model faithfulness for our younger folks in the church. We worship side by side. We pray side by side. We fellowship together side by side. And we serve side by side. Children and youth learn a lot from "us" as we model Christian living. Modeling generosity is an important practice of Christian living. We give, because God has given to us. We give generously, whether weekly, monthly, or through special offerings and donations. Sometimes we pass the plate on by us, knowing we have given through the office or mail. Each week as the offering plate is passed, we encourage you to either place your pledged offering in the plate or to give an extra dollar bill (or what you are able) in the plate so that young eyes that are watching will learn generosity through our practices. Please remember FPCPC in your wills and trusts.
