1 4th April 2014 Principal: Br Bill Tynan Assistant Principal - Curriculum: Mrs Janine Conolly Assistant Principal - Mission (Acting): Mr Paul MacCallum Head of Residential: Ms Veronica Loudon Business Manager: Mr David Osborne Office Manager: Mrs Sue Wegert Br Bill Tynan Families and Friends of MSB, Hopefully, the term just gone has been a significant one in the long history of MSB. To most of us involved here at MSB, the years since 2006 have been confusing, difficult & frustrating. St Stephen s opened down the road in Mareeba, and over the years between , over half of MSB s usual enrolments moved there. But at present, we have about 185 students, the most since 2005, and if reports from recent enrolment trips and enquiries are correct over 250 in MSB is back, after those 7 confusing years. Next term will we have an opening ceremony for our new facilities- offices, classrooms, boarding, staff areas, the lift - close to 30 new rooms now being used which were not available in Of course the usual problems-not all of our students stay focused, and I keep repeating to them my two basic rules- 1-You can t stay here if you are not willing to make an effort to learn. 2- You can t stay here if your actions make it difficult or impossible for others to learn. You all know that major sacrifices are being made so that some families can have students here. Please emphasise at home, that all need to work to make MSB a pleasant place to live, facebook bullies, all bullies will not be tolerated. Have a good Easter, the 4 Easter days have a message - a family meal, a death, mourning but then the Resurrection. Just as Jesus did, so these will be part of all our lives. Br Bill Tynan

2 Assistant Principal - Curriculum Last week I was privileged to travel to several of the Torres Strait Islands, home to a number of our students. This was a valuable time for discussing student progress with parents and carers, and gaining insight into the opportunities for students as they leave MSB for work & study. I am keen to progress further opportunities for our students into the future. REPORTS Susannah Mosby Environmental Health Officer Yorke Island All student s Term 1 Progress Profiles will be mailed home this week. It has been a long term, and I am impressed with the level of focus some of our students are maintaining as they work hard to achieve their goals. Please be aware that if your student has a Personalised Learning Plan (PLP) attached to their report card, this plan is being followed for their learning It details the level of learning being accessed. Well done, and keep up the good work! QCS PRACTICE All eligible and interested year 11 & 12 students have been working hard on their QCS preparation. Next term students will be working on specific writing task skills development, followed by practice papers. The QCS test is on the 2nd and 3rd of September this year, and all students are working hard towards achieving well. The QCS test is based on the Common Curriculum Elements, which are skills and processes that cut across subject areas. Wide reading and building vocabulary are great preparatory activities that will assist students with achieving well here. Please encourage your student to read actively over the break, and focus on building their vocabulary. To this end I have given the year 12s a senior exam vocabulary sheet to work with. Also encourage your students to review the practice questions that we have been working through. Specific skills are addressed in each package, and students have retained their copies. NAPLAN Students in year 9 will be consolidating skills explicitly taught in Term 1, and experiencing some NAPLAN practice tests early in term 2. NAPLAN testing days are 13-15th May Please encourage your student to work positively towards achieving well. This is moment -in-time data, and we encourage all students to give their best effort. Certificate III Education Support - This senior student is undergoing a Traineeship based at MSB, while working on her Certificate III. New learning areas available this year Agriculture & Horticulture Students are focussed on growing Red Claw for their first project. PARENT / TEACHER INTERVIEWS I would also like to draw to your attention Parent/Teacher/Student conferencing to be held on the 1st May. Interviews are to be held from 4pm until 6pm including refreshments, and I will be available to discuss QTAC and career information for interested year 12 students and Parents/Carers. During Term 2, we will also be interviewing year 12 students to discuss their transition plans from High school to either: study, a traineeship or work. Please make appointment times through the Office if you wish to discuss these matters with me. Many thanks, Janine Conolly Senior Sciences

3 Assistant Principal Mission (Acting) Hello parents, carers and students, This year is one of those years where we find ourselves at the end of the first term but still only a little past the half-way mark of Lent. As I may have mentioned earlier in the term, for Catholics, Lent is a time for strengthening faith: a time to reflect on who we are and where we are going. It is a time to give increased focus on quietness and prayer, a time of penance and meditation, a time to become more aware of our strengths and weaknesses. Lent urges us to identify and walk with Jesus as he travels towards Jerusalem and the place of his death and resurrection. In the spirit of renewal and conversion we observe Lent by reflecting on the central events of Jesus life and welcoming the opportunity to grow through changing our lives. With Holy Week and Easter falling at the end of the school holiday period this year, it appears somewhat out of place to be celebrating Holy Week and Easter as they are still a couple of weeks away. We will therefore celebrate as a whole school when we return in Term 2 with a greater emphasis on the Resurrection. So, what is Holy Week? As the title suggests, we are called to enter this time with reverence and celebrate its rites with care and devotion. All normal parish activity is put on hold so that the community can focus on these special days. It includes the days from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday. On Palm Sunday the Gospel readings highlight that which will be celebrated in the week that lies ahead our passage with the Lord from his death to resurrection. Jesus was welcomed by crowds worshiping him and laying down palm leaves before him. Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week, with the greatest tragedy and sorrow of the year. Jesus' triumphant return to Jerusalem is only one side of the story. By now many of the Jews are filled with hate for Our Lord. They want to see him stoned. On Wednesday Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. Here he foretold the apostles the events of the next several days, including His impending death. He returned to Jerusalem on Thursday, to share the Last Supper with His apostles. He was subsequently arrested and tried. He was crucified at Calvary on Friday, outside the gates of Jerusalem, buried the same day, and arose three days later, on Easter Sunday. All of this is done by our Lord for forgiveness of our sins, and for life everlasting with Him. God so loved us, that He sent His only begotten Son to die for us, so that our sins may be forgiven. You must not be afraid. I know you are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He is not here- he has been raised, just as he said! (Matthew 28:5-6) The celebration of Easter is most significant for us as Catholics. We celebrate the saving love and the new life given to us through the resurrection of Jesus. Please see the times and dates for Holy Week and Easter Celebrations being celebrated in our Parish and surrounding areas. Wishing everyone a safe, happy and holy Easter. Paul MacCallum Assistant Principal Mission (Acting) Important Religious Dates This Term April 13 th Palm Sunday (Holy Week begins during school holidays) April 18th Good Friday (During Holidays) April 20th Easter Sunday (During Holidays) Tournament of Minds Challenging the World Tournament of Minds is an opportunity for students in Years 8 to 11 who have a passion for learning and problem solving to demonstrate their skills and talents in an exciting, vibrant and public way. 4 Information Technology and Graphics Computer Lab awaiting some TLC Students in Certificate III in Information, Digital Media and Technology course have been busy planning for their own student run computer network. This network is going to be installed in the lower library classroom. Starting next term for their assessment, the entire class will be installing computers and network hardware themselves and starting up a game server. This room has been tentatively called the otaku lounge or geek lounge by the students who intend to use their network during lunch breaks to play multiplayer games. Students in 11 Graphics this term have been working hard on designing Mobile Phone Stands as part of Industrial Design. This term, students have been able to use MSB s 3D printer for their work. MSB has had the 3D printer since Term 4 last year, however, a steep learning curve and technical knowledge has prevented its use until now. The use of the 3D printer and rapid prototyping has given students the enormous benefit of being able to test their designs in the real world. Many of the prototypes have gone through quite a few changes as structural problems have been noted. The Phone stand is being tested as a sellable product in a variety of colours and styles. 5 Science Department Report As we approach the end of term 1, it s a case of heads down and study for students of Science at MSB. With formal exams in year 11 Biology, 11 and 12 Physics, and 12 Chemistry, as well as a number of tests and reports due in 8,9, and 10 science, students are busy writing, reviewing and revising. In the last month we have continued with our hands on and practical approach to Science while ensuring that all lessons have a solid foundation of theory. With this in mind, Senior Agriculture students with Mr Trueman have been using the Pearson square method of formulating animal diets, and have been testing water for the growing red claw population. Level 2 students in year 10 have been using flame colour tests to look for the presence of different metals in water, and level 2 students in year 8 have been investigating the separation of mixtures by making wood glue from milk. A recent highlight in Science at MSB has been the second in a series of on-line lectures from the University of Melbourne. Year 11and 12 Physics students, some parents and teachers spent an enjoyable hour or so sharing a very interactive Physics lecture with Melbourne high school students. These lectures are the initiative of Mr Ben Smith (no relation), our new and enthusiastic Physics teacher. Here is Bens description of the evening. Another Physics lecture was held on Thursday, 20 March. The topic covered was Misconceptions in Physics. The connection between Mount St Bernard College and The University of Melbourne was quite clear and allowed for the students at MSB to see that the six of them were a part of an audience that had nearly one hundred students in physical attendance at The University of Melbourne. A happy coincidence is the fact that MSB Year 11 students are covering the same topic and so were able to obtain alternative learning about Motion. With the diagram of the ball being pushed into the wall, the arrows represent where Forces are acting and to what magnitude. Which diagram is correct, with our current understanding of Physics? The photo is from The University of Melbourne and the MSB students are shown on the lecture screen. Keith Smith Science Coordinator ICAS UNSW TESTING Students wishing to sit ICAS UNSW tests this year in Writing - English - Computer Skills Science - Mathematics should contact Mr Akers, Mrs Weedon, Mr K Smith or Mr B Smith as soon as possible. 6 NAIDOC POSTER 2014 This year, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students were invited to submit an artwork based on this years theme Serving Country: Centenary and Beyond. The poster competition is a chance for talented artists aged 13 years and older to be recognised across Australia. The winning artwork will be used to create the National NAIDOC Poster which will promote NAIDOC week The students were asked to give their artwork a name and write the hidden meaning and symbolism of their poster. Here are a few examples of the fabulous work Mount St Bernard is producing; Trevor Mudu Year 8.4 A2 Paper and Paint Pens Turtle run My artwork symbolizes the totem of a turtle, I drew a turtle for each Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander that has served for our country. 8 Year 9.1 Social Science This term, Ms Trudy s Year 9 Social Science class has been insatiably studying the Industrial Revolution and how it has impacted the modern world. Through the students thirst for knowledge and understanding coupled with their inquiring minds and evaluation of sources, they each have produced a scrapbook of their journey through the Industrial Revolution. Each student has delved into the lives of people living in the 1800 s, reflecting on what it would have been like to live and work during this time and how that time has impacted our lives today. Examples of diary entries, showing the students understanding of living conditions during the Industrial Revolution, featured entries from a Lord, a Lady, a child from an aristocratic family, a street urchin, a factory worker, and a mine worker, to name a few. The class journey through the Industrial Revolution has been one filled with wonder and excitement, with the end result being something each class member should be very proud of. Well done Year 9. Now, let s get cracking on discovering how this great nation of ours became what it is today!

The warm breakfast was well received, following the final run. Congratulations to our newest school based apprentices James Jackson, Sean Fisher and Oscar Burnett doing a Cert III in Civil Construction Plant Operations with Redcorp. Well Done! Mrs Conolly Thank you to the students who made a continual effort to come along to the runs at 6:30am in the morning! Good luck with the cross country run. Mr Ben Smith and Mr Paul King.

10 Lex & Johno round up 10.2 for motivational talk Lex Fulford & Johno Anderson-Ross visited the school last week to talk to the year 10.2 s. Each gave a talk about where they had come from and what hardships at school they had with not being able to read or write very well. They explained that they too were scared to leave their community but could see if they stayed there they may end up doing nothing with their lives. Lex is now in his 5th year of working as a station hand and Johno is in his 3rd. Lex told how he started with doing a horsemanship course and then learning about cattle, fencing and other different jobs that you would find working on a big station which led him to graduating top of his class and being sent to his first cattle station in Central Qld. The main messages the boys passed on to the students was to step out of your community when you finish school and try things as you can always go back to visit, never give up, set goals for yourself and you can succeed in life if you are not so good at reading and writing. Long hours of hard work in dusty, hot, wet and cold conditions still does not deter these two young Indigenous role models from ever giving up. Both are about to venture up to Legune Station on the Western Australian Northern Territory boarder for another year of work and excitement. Comments from some of 10.2 after the talk I want to join that next year! When he said that you don t need to be good at school stuff to do well I was really surprised. They get good pay, even though it s hard work. It s worth it! I want to travel around Australia instead of staying in one place. It was a good talk and it was good to think that s something I could do. Interschool Equestrian Event Year 11 MSB student, Samantha Brooks, recently competed in an interschool equestrian event in Mareeba. Samantha did very well in the year 11 & 12 category division of barrel racing and pole bending. In August Samantha and 4 other MSB students will be competing in another interschool event in Atherton.
