Dear Friends, Many of you will be aware that Kenny and I were recently with a group of young people from our Club on a church twinning visit to l église réformée du Bouclier in Strasbourg. It was a wonderful trip and we have many stories to share of the welcome we received from Fabian Clavairoly and members of the church. Here are some of the photos taken while we were there: In the second letter to the Corinthians (2 Corinthians 5:20) Paul describes himself and Timothy as ambassadors for Christ. Be assured that the girls from Club did a wonderful job of representing Logie Kirk in Strasbourg and of being ambassadors for Christ to the people of l église réformée du Bouclier. During worship on Sunday 22 July they sang for everyone the song Jesus walks beside us in Scotland, and having passed over gifts from Logie Kirk and thanked the Bouclier congregation in my (very poor) French I had the honour of giving the benediction - a French translation of a Celtic blessing.

A huge THANK YOU to Jim Miller and to all in Logie Kirk who had the vision and helped with the fundraising to make such a trip happen. With love and blessings Rev Ruth Halley (Minister) Focus on Youth 2018 is the Year of Young People and in this issue of the newsletter we feature the activities of young people in Logie. In June the Friends of Logie Awards Ceremony celebrated the achievements of young people and students from local schools and the University. The following month members of Logie Kirk Club visited our twin church in Strasbourg, while in August primary school age children enjoyed the holiday club activities in the Kirk Halls. Rachel Miller: It has been brought to our attention that the name of Rachel Miller, usually known as Ray, was spelt incorrectly in an earlier issue of Logie Kirk News. Ray, a former elder at Logie Kirk died in March 2016 and is much missed by her family. We apologise for the concern this error has caused. 4 Friends of Logie Kirk Annual Awards Ceremony The Friends of Logie Kirk held their annual awards ceremony in the Halls on Wednesday 20th June. This was a great celebration of the young in our parish and we were delighted to welcome Robin Downie, the Moderator of this year s Youth Assembly and a student at Stirling University as our guest of honour. This unique event brought together all the educational establishments in the Parish with both Riverside and Cornton Primaries, Wallace High and the University represented. Awards of 300 were made to each of the Schools. Riverside are to put theirs towards funding their Loose Parts Play Initiative which encourages the children to build skills of resilience, teamwork and communication through playing imaginatively with Loose Parts and they made a presentation about this.

Cornton are to put theirs towards an outdoor container for their new playground toys and they made a presentation on their reading project. Wallace High are to put theirs towards their 6th form charitable efforts. In addition, Individual book token awards of 50 each were made to 6 pupils from Wallace High going on to University to help them buy books for their courses. The 6 were Aidan Kemp, Bruce Currie, Georgia Sanchez, Kirsty McReight, Molly Williams and Steven Knox. An additional book token award was made to Eilidh McNaughton from Logie Kirk. The Jim Meldrum Memorial Prize for the best dissertation on a Christian theme was made to Robyn Stewart. She had been awarded a first and was going on to take a Masters in Religious Studies at Edinburgh University. Robin Downie gave an excellent address describing some of his experiences as youth moderator and Andrew Boyle and Shannon Davis from Wallace High provided excellent musical interludes on a very enjoyable evening celebrating the young in our community. Rev Ruth Halley presided on the evening and Betty Inglis and her team of helpers provided lavish hospitality afterwards. The next Friends of Logie Lecture will take place on Wednesday 7th November at 7.30 pm in the Logie Lecture Theatre at the University. All are welcome to attend.

Final Memories of Stirling University Life 50 Years Ago from Lorna Gammack Apart from encouraging the members of Logie Kirk to take in Students until enough residences were built the Minister, Dr Smith, started up a hostess scheme whereby we offered hospitality on a regular basis to students. For many it was their first time away from home and they found it comforting to have a cosy home to visit. Many came and went and after they found their feet, they didn t need to come back, which was the aim of the exercise. One student, however, who came from Sri Lanka came every week for the 4 years he was here. His name was J.M.T.B. Jayasundara. My mouth must have dropped when he introduced himself because he said, but you can call me Tikiri. One night in 1977, after dinner he said, I can read people s fortunes by looking at their palms. When he came to me he said I see you have always ben involved in the church but soon you will be asked to do a great deal more - and sure enough a few days later Dr Smith came to ask if I would join the Kirk Session. About 20 years later I answered the door and there was Tikiri. What a reunion! He had been in London at an International conference for bankers and he said, I made up my mind that whenever it was over I d be on the first plane to Scotland to see Bertie and Lorna. By that time, he was the Head of the Bank in Colombo. For one year I had a delightful Japanese student called Yoko. She needed access to a piano and used to practise for 3-4 hours each day. When she went back home she became the organist in a church in Tokyo. In Dr Smith s Moderatorial year he was asked if he could put up a young woman who was training to be a missionary. She was doing a crash course in Japanese at Stirling University. Once more Dr Smith asked if I would put her up because of course he and Mrs Smith would be away a lot.

Claire stayed for nearly 6 months. When she finished she went out to Tokyo and she and Yoko actually met up. Both had occupied the same top room in my house. It s a very small world! My own two sons both took their degrees at Stirling, so the University has had a huge impact on my life and I have enjoyed every minute of it Christian Aid Walk to Remember, Saturday 1st September The Christian Aid annual walk, Another Way to Remember, is an opportunity to raise money for Christian Aid while remembering those we have loved. The walk starts at Dollar Parish Church at 10.00am and ends at Logie Kirk with a short service and opportunity to light candles. Register at jdalas@christian-aid.org, The total collected during Christian Aid week from the envelopes in the Kirk and the door to door collections was Many thanks to those who kindly donated for this appeal and also those who carried out the door to door collections.

Strasbourg 2018 The five who visited Strasbourg were Megan Rennie, Amy Morrison, Ailsa McColl, Chloe Taylor and Lucy Morrison, all ably assisted by Rev Ruth Halley and Kenny Inglis. Megan, Lucy, Chloe, Amy, Ailsa I enjoyed the boat trip as it was a great way to see and hear about Strasbourg. I also enjoyed our visit to Parc de L Orangerie Amy I enjoyed climbing the steps of the cathedral because the view allowed you to see a different view of Strasbourg Ailsa

I thoroughly enjoyed the meal we had at Fabian s house where we ate some French cuisine and enjoyed great company Megan I enjoyed going to the European Parliament because I found it really interesting and learned a lot of new things. Lucy I liked visiting the church because I met new people that I d never have met before. Chloe

Holiday Club 2018 Celebrations A very enjoyable holiday Club took place in the Kirk Halls from 6 th -8 th August In this Year of Young People, those attending were encouraged to celebrate themselves, each other and others around the world. The adults enjoyed seeing the children having fun. The children all enjoyed different things. There was so much to do and enjoy.

Smiles and laughter from everyone

This is the text in English of the address that Ruth gave to the Bouclier congregation, although she actually delivered it in French. Dear friends, Thank you so much for the welcome which you have offered to us. It is wonderful to be here with you on a visit to you from the Church of Scotland congregation in Logie Kirk, near Stirling. Let me introduce all the members of our group. The young people are: Megan, Ailsa and Amy, Lucy and Chloe. They are all members of our church youth group. Kenny Inglis is an Elder in our church, and also my husband, and I am the Minister Ruth. We travelled here on Friday and we are staying at a campsite near here. We are all delighted to be able to visit with our friends in L-Eglise Reformee du Bouclier. In the letter to the Romans Paul writes these words: May the God of steadfastness and encouragement grant you to live in harmony with one another, in accordance with Christ Jesus, so that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Welcome one another, therefore, just as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God. Romans 15:5-7 Thank you all so much for the welcome and hospitality which you have offered us. We bring with us a message of love from Logie Kirk. All the people of our church pray God s blessing for you. We also bring a small gift which is a token of our affection. This is known as a Quaich. It is a traditional Scottish drinking cup and, as you can see, has two handles. We like to think that the two handles represent our two churches and the friendship between us. The Quaich is engraved with the words: A gift from Logie Kirk. We also have some traditional Scottish biscuits to share with you shortbread and Tunnocks teacakes and some Scotch Whisky to leave with you. We hope you enjoy them. Thank you again for your warm welcome and hospitality. I d like to close now with a traditional Celtic blessing. In the name of the father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit: May the road rise to meet you May the wind be always at your back May pure be the joys that surround you May true be the hearts that love you And until we meet again May God hold you in the palm of His hand. Amen

LogieOGG We have had a bad summer at the Old Kirk this year. After our lovely evening service in June it was noticed that following storm Hector, the north east boundary wall had finally collapsed. This area has been the cause of concern for some time and applications for funding for the repairs, estimated at around 50,000, have so far been unsuccessful. Loose memorial foundations and the risk of possible land slip means that safety fencing must be erected before public access to the site can be allowed so the site remains locked until planning permission is granted for the fencing. The collapsed wall seen from the burn side where the drop is about 15 feet This has meant that there were no tours for visitors this year with the associated loss of revenue. We have not been able to do any gardening maintenance either and it is hoped that once we can get back on site volunteers will be able to help us get things back to good condition once again. It has also been very disappointing for four groups from abroad who planned to visit while in Scotland. Our Annual General Meeting will be held in the Fergusson Room on Monday 29 th October at 7.30pm. After the difficult summer it will encourage the trustees greatly if there is a good attendance.

Safeguarding at Logie Here at Logie, we are committed to supporting each other in a spirit of Christian fellowship and care. In modern-day Scotland, this means that we are subject to a number of legal safeguards to help us in our work. The Safeguarding Panel would hugely welcome your support. Are you interested to learn more about the role of safeguarding in modern institutions? Would you like to. offer time to the work of the Church make friends across the different organisations we support? add skills to your CV? We are called to make our witness to Christ a safe place for everyone. Our church organisations are busy, and we need to support them effectively in their work. Meeting with different organisations to discuss safeguarding issues and understanding training and support needs are crucial for the legal working of the church and we could use your help. Whether you have a gift for networking, public speaking, admin work or could help in a practical way with the many different things safeguarding entails, there are plenty of tasks, small and large, that are available. We would be thrilled to have you along. If you are interested or would like to know more, please speak to one of the Safeguarding Panel members, Kat Neumann (kle.neumann@googl .com, Graham Eadie ( ) or Rev Ruth Halley ( ).

Some of our members are going to the Guild Rally at the Caird Hall, Dundee in September. It is a wonderful day out, with inspiring speakers, great singing and friends to meet.
