1 THE BAPTISM OF OUR LORD January 7, 2017 A.D. Rev. Dr. Cory J. Rajek (608) Faith Ev. Lutheran Church Pierre, SD Senior Pastor Website: Rev. Joshua Baumann (605) Associate Pastor Church Phone (605) Church Fax (605) A Christ Caring People Who Gather Around Word and Sacrament, Yoked Together, In Personal Service to Christ in World Wide Missions AS WE GATHER Jesus began His work for our salvation when He became man at Christmas. He began His active work shedding the first drops of redeeming blood at His circumcision. Now He takes His place alongside all mankind as He stands in the Jordan River. At His Baptism, He receives the Holy Spirit, and a voice from heaven declares, You are My beloved Son. Beginning now, our Lord lives for us sinless under the Law of God as He does all the way to His ultimate work of deliverance, shedding His blood on the cross. We take comfort that our Savior is with us, right alongside, with His Word and Spirit to enable us to live holy lives by faith and with the boldness of the cross, following Him. Our Baptism is for us the beginning of the new, eternal life that unites us with God both now and forever. WELCOME and ANNOUNCEMENTS If there are prayer concerns for you, your family, your friends, or your neighbors, please put them on the blue information card. Our Board of Elders are prayerful with our pastors about these joys and struggles of our earthly journey. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective. James 5:16b T DIVINE SERVICE T OPENING HYMN (8:00am only) To Jordan s River Came Our Lord (LSB 405) BAPTISMAL HYMN (Note: The 3 rd stanza will be sung after the Rite of Baptism.) (11:00am) 1. Dearest Jesus, we are here, 2. Take Savannah as Your own, Gladly Your command obeying; Shepherd, take Your lamb and feed her; With this child we now draw near Prince of Peace, make here Your throne, In response to Your own saying Way of Life, to heaven lead her; That to You it shall be given Precious Vine, let nothing sever As a child and heir of heaven From Your side this branch forever. 1

2 3. Now into Your heart we pour Prayers that from our hearts proceeded. Our petitions heav nward soar; May our hearts desires be heeded! Write this name we now have given; Write it in the book of heaven! Text and Tune: Public domain. The words of this hymn have been altered (LSB 592) for congregational purposes. OPENING SENTENCES P In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. C The voice of the Lord is over the waters. P John appeared, baptizing in the wilderness and proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. C The voice of the Lord is over the waters. P Beloved, all who are baptized into Christ have been buried with Him that we may also be united in a resurrection like His. Let us recall our Baptism through the words of the invocation. INVOCATION P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. 2 Genesis 1:1; Mark 1:4; Romans 6:3 4, adapt. RITE OF HOLY BAPTISM (11:00am only) (LSB 268) CONFESSION and ABSOLUTION P O almighty God, merciful Father, C I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor, sinful being. P Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office as a called and ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. WORD

3 INTROIT Psalm 2:7 11, 12c; antiphon: Isaiah 42:1a P Behold my servant, whom I uphold, C my chosen, in whom my soul delights; P I will tell of the decree: The LORD said to me, You are my Son; C today I have begotten you. P Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage, C and the ends of the earth your possession. P You shall break them with a rod of iron C and dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel. P Now therefore, O kings, be wise; C be warned, O rulers of the earth. P Serve the LORD with fear, C and rejoice with trembling. P for his wrath is quickly kindled. C Blessed are all who take refuge in him. C Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. P Behold my servant, whom I uphold, C my chosen, in whom my soul delights; KYRIE GLORIA IN EXCELSIS 3

(Please stand) OFFERTORY Baptized into Your Name Most Holy (LSB 509) PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH P Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs. Almighty God, our heavenly Father, we praise You for Your whole creation, for the beauty of the earth and for the orderly passage of days. As sin has brought only chaos and disorder to the lives of all, You therefore sent Your Son who, by Your Word and Spirit, has restored Your world through His cross and resurrection. Bring that same restoration to the lives of all those baptized into Christ that we may live our days in peace and joy. Lord, in Your mercy, C hear our prayer. P C P Guard and bless those You continually send in Your name to proclaim the restoration of life through Your Word and Sacraments. Send Your Holy Spirit upon them as they preach Jesus Christ, Your beloved Son, to the world. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer. Send Your light and truth to guide all in the authority of government that darkness and 5

P Give courage and comfort to all who are in sorrow or need, sickness or trials, (especially...). Set them free in the forgiveness of their sins to faithfully look to You, the God of peace, healing, and life. Lord, in Your mercy, C hear our prayer. P C We give You thanks for all those baptized into Christ who have gone before us and are now set free from sin in the presence of Your mercy. In fellowship with all Your saints, bring us to the joys of Your heavenly kingdom. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer. P Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in Your mercy; through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. C Amen. LORD S PRAYER C Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. The 11:00am service continues on page 10 with the Benediction. IN REGARD TO HOLY COMMUNION: According to Scripture, Holy Communion should be celebrated by those who are: United in a common faith (1 Cor. 10:16-17, 21-22; Rom. 16:17); Repentant of sins (1 Cor. 5:11, Matt. 18:17-18); Able to examine their lives (1 Cor. 11:27-29); and believe that in this precious meal they receive the true body and blood of Jesus given and shed for the forgiveness of their sins (Luke 22:19-22). Since Scripture teaches that those people who do not fully understand the meaning of this meal eat and drink to their own harm (1Cor. 11:27-29), and because the Lord s Supper is the supreme act of stating our unity in faith and doctrine, we would ask those people who are visiting with us to please speak with one of our pastors, before communing, in order that we might fulfill our responsibility of properly instructing people in the right use of the precious Sacrament. SERVICE OF THE SACRAMENT 6

7 8:20am Service PREFACE P The Lord be with you. C And also with you. P Lift up your hearts. C We lift them to the Lord. P Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C It is right to give Him thanks and praise. P It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord; for at His Baptism, Your voice from heaven revealed Him as Your beloved Son, and the Holy Spirit descended on Him, confirming Him to be the Christ. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying: SANCTUS PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING P Blessed are You, O Lord our God, King of all creation, for You have had mercy on us and given Your only-begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. By the Baptism of Your Son, You have sanctified and instituted all waters to be a blessed flood and a lavish washing away of sin. Baptized in His name, You have given us the forgiveness of sins and the faith that clings to Your promises of eternal life. 7

8 We give You thanks for the redemption You have prepared for us through Jesus Christ. Grant us Your Holy Spirit that we may faithfully eat and drink of the fruits of His cross and receive the blessings of forgiveness, life, and salvation that come to us in His body and blood. C Amen. WORDS OF OUR LORD Matt 26:26 28; Mk 14:22 24; Lk 22:19 20; 1 Cor 11:23 25 PAX DOMINI P The peace of the Lord be with you always. C And also with you.
