THE THIRD SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY January 21, 2017 A.D. Rev. Dr. Cory J. Rajek (608) Faith Ev. Lutheran Church Pierre, SD Senior Pastor Website: Rev. Joshua Baumann (605) Associate Pastor Church Phone (605) Church Fax (605) A Christ Caring People Who Gather Around Word and Sacrament, Yoked Together, In Personal Service to Christ in World Wide Missions AS WE GATHER Peter, Andrew, James, and John were fishermen by trade. Jesus invited them to follow Him, promising He would make them fishers of men. What could this possibly mean? The prophet Jonah may provide a clue. Swallowed, and then regurgitated by a great fish after running from God, Jonah was given another chance to cast a Gospel net for the people of Nineveh. With only the lure of Jonah s brief, Law-heavy sermon, Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!, God reeled in a bountiful Kingdom-catch, saving more than 120,000 people and animals in that city. Jesus own preaching announces the fullness of time, the presence of God s reign, and invites repentance and faith in the Good News from God, which He embodies and enacts. This message proclaimed and sacramentally enacted is the net by which Holy Spirit calls, gathers, enlightens, and sanctifies people under God s gracious reign. WELCOME and ANNOUNCEMENTS If there are prayer concerns for you, your family, your friends, or your neighbors, please put them on the blue information card. Our Board of Elders are prayerful with our pastors about these joys and struggles of our earthly journey. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective. James 5:16b Today we are celebrating Life Sunday, the gift and sanctity of human life. Our worship service and sermon will focus on this topic. Life related material is on display in the narthex. We would especially encourage you with small children to show them the fetal models. A donation jar is provided on the table for those who would like to support Faith s Life Team as we uphold the sanctity of life. Pastor Baumann will also be leading Adult Bible Class on life issues this morning. Faith s Life Team is serving bars and coffee in the Living Room. Enjoy a bar and cup of coffee on the Life Team. 1

T DIVINE SERVICE T OPENING HYMN 10,000 Reasons (Matt Redman and Jonas Myrin) Praise Team and Congregation (refrain) Bless the Lord, O my soul, O my soul. Worship His holy name. Sing like never before, O my soul. I ll worship Your holy name. The sun comes up, it s a new day dawning. It s time to sing Your song again. Whatever may pass and whatever lies before me let me be singing when the evening comes. (refrain) You re rich in love and You re slow to anger. Your name is great and Your heart is kind. For all Your goodness I will keep on singing ten thousand reasons for my heart to find. (refrain) And on that day when my strength is failing, the end draws near and my time has come, Still my soul will sing Your praise unending, ten thousand years and then forevermore. Bless the Lord, O my soul, O my soul. Worship His holy name. Sing like never before, O my soul. I ll worship Your holy name, Worship Your holy name. God, I ll worship Your holy name. Sing like never before, O my soul, I ll worship Your holy name. I ll worship Your holy name. God, I ll worship Your holy name. INVOCATION P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. CONFESSION and ABSOLUTION Psalm 30 P Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord! O Lord, hear my voice! C Let your ears be attentive to the voice of my pleas for mercy! P If you, O Lord, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand? C But with you there is forgiveness, that you may be feared. P I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his word I hope; C My soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen for the morning, more than watchmen for the morning. 2

C O Lord of might and mercy, Who made us to hope for life in You, we confess that we have sought hope in ourselves instead and stolen hope from our neighbors. We have sinned against what You command and against what You create. Our selfishness has closed our hearts, our ears and eyes and hands, to Your Word of truth and love. As we have no hope apart from Your grace, forgive us and redeem us for the sake of Jesus Christ. Amen. P O Israel, hope in the Lord! For with the Lord there is steadfast love, and with Him is plentiful redemption. He will redeem Israel from all his iniquities. Christ Jesus died for your trespasses and rose for your justification. Upon this your confession, and under His authority, I, as a called and ordained servant of Christ, forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son T and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. WORD INTROIT P By awesome deeds you answer us with righteousness, O God of our salvation, C the hope of all the ends of the earth and of the farthest seas; P Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob, C whose hope is in the Lord his God, P who made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, C who keeps faith forever; P who executes justice for the oppressed, C who gives food to the hungry. P The Lord sets the prisoners free; the Lord opens the eyes of the blind. C The Lord lifts up those who are bowed down; the Lord loves the righteous. P The Lord watches over the sojourners; he upholds the widow and the fatherless, C but the way of the wicked he brings to ruin. C Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. P By awesome deeds you answer us with righteousness, O God of our salvation, C the hope of all the ends of the earth and of the farthest seas; Psalm 146:5-9; 65:5 antiphon SONG OF PRAISE Shout to the Lord (Darlene Zschech) Praise Team and Congregation My Jesus, my Savior, Lord there is none like You, All of my days, I want to praise the wonders of Your mighty love; My Comfort, my Shelter, Tower of refuge and strength; Let ev ry breath, all that I am, never cease to worship You. 3

CREED 8:20am Nicene Inside back cover of the Lutheran Service Book 11:00am Apostles Inside back cover of the Lutheran Service Book OFFERING We gather our tithes, gifts of love, and our Building Together in Faith gifts. (Please stand) OFFERTORY As the Deer (Martin Nystrom) Praise Team and Congregation As the deer pants for the water, so my soul longs after You. You alone are my heart s desire, and I long to worship You. (chorus) You alone are my strength, my shield. To You alone may my spirit yield. You alone are my heart s desire and I long to worship You. You re my friend and You are my brother even though You are a King. I love You more than any other, so much more than anything. (chorus) I want You more than gold or silver; only You can satisfy. You alone are the real joy-giver and the apple of my eye. (chorus) PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH P Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs. P For the holy Christian Church gathered here and scattered throughout the world, that in the face of sinfulness and suffering, we find our entire life and hope in the Lord Jesus Christ, and that our ministry and witness steadfastly hold forth this Gospel of forgiveness and salvation, let us pray to the Lord: C Lord, have mercy. P For this land, that its leaders and laws resist temptations to allow or employ death as a solution, but instead, as instruments of the Almighty Maker, they respect and protect the hope and preciousness intrinsic to every human being, particularly those endangered by abortion, assisted suicide, and other such satanic deceptions, let us pray to the Lord: C Lord, have mercy. P For our communities and schools, that by God s guidance they pursue truth rather than public approval, civil discourse rather than demands, and the common good rather than convenience, let us pray to the Lord: C Lord, have mercy. P For marriages and homes, parents and children, that they remain refuges of hope for one 6

another, embodying and mediating the same acceptance and servanthood the Heavenly Father has bestowed in establishing these blessed vocations for us, let us pray to the Lord: C Lord, have mercy. P For those burdened under distress and despair, including all who mourn sins against life, that our Redeemer raise their eyes to receive peace in God s forgiveness and cradle their hearts until Christ s compassion heals them, let us pray to the Lord: C Lord, have mercy. P For those dealing with diseases, disabilities, or dying, (especially ) that our Savior s grace grants them relief and recovery in His time and according to His will, and that He strengthens them with the promise of bodily resurrection and sustains them in the hope of everlasting life, let us pray to the Lord: C Lord, have mercy. P For those rejoicing in God s rich life-giving, that we mark these occasions as tokens of a fuller hope in the new creation and we hail them as foretastes of our even greater inheritance in Christ Jesus, let us pray to the Lord: C Lord, have mercy. P Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend ourselves and all for whom we pray, trusting in Your mercy, through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. C Amen. LORD S PRAYER C Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. The 11:00am service continues on page 10 with the Benediction. PREFACE P The Lord be with you. C And also with you. P Lift up your hearts. C We lift them to the Lord. P Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C It is right to give Him thanks and praise. SERVICE OF THE SACRAMENT 8:20am Service 7

P It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord; for what had been hidden from before the foundation of the world You have made known to the nations in Your Son. In Him, being found in the substance of our mortal nature, You have manifested the fullness of Your glory. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying: SANCTUS Holy, Holy, Holy (LSB 507) Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore Thee, Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea; Cherubim and seraphim falling down before Thee, Which wert and art and evermore shalt be. Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! All Thy works shall praise Thy name in earth and sky and sea. Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty! God in three persons, blessèd Trinity! Public domain PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING P Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You have had mercy on those whom You created and sent Your only-begotten Son into our flesh to bear our sin and be our Savior. With repentant joy we receive the salvation accomplished for us by the all-availing sacrifice of His body and His blood on the cross. Gathered in the name and the remembrance of Jesus, we beg You, O Lord, to forgive, renew, and strengthen us with Your Word and Spirit. Grant us faithfully to eat His body and drink His blood as He bids us do in His own testament. Gather us together, we pray, from the ends of the earth to celebrate with all the faithful the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which has no end. Graciously receive our prayers; deliver and preserve us. To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C Amen. WORDS OF OUR LORD Matt 26:26 28; Mk 14:22 24; Lk 22:19 20; 1 Cor 11:23 25 PAX DOMINI P The peace of the Lord be with you always. C And also with you. 8

P Gracious God, our heavenly Father, You have given us a foretaste of the feast to come in the Holy Supper of Your Son's body and blood. Keep us firm in the true faith throughout our days of pilgrimage that, on the day of His coming, we may, together with all Your saints, celebrate the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom which has no end; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. CLOSING HYMN From the Squalor of a Borrowed Stable (Immanuel) (Stuart Townsend) Praise Team and Congregation From the squalor of a borrowed stable, by the Spirit and a virgin s faith; To the anguish and the shame of scandal came the Savior of the human race! But the skies were filled with the praise of heav n shepherds listen as the angels tell Of the Gift of God come- down to man at the dawning of Immanuel. King of heaven now the friend of sinners, Humble servant in the Father s hands, Filled with power and Holy Spirit, filled with mercy for the broken man. Yes, He walked my road and He felt my pain, joys and struggles that I know so well; Yet His righteous steps give me hope again I will follow my Immanuel. Through the kisses of a friend s betrayal, He was lifted on a cru-el cross; He was punished for a world s transgressions, He was suffering to save the lost. He- fights for breath, He- fights for me. Loosing sinners from the claims of hell; And- with a shout our souls are free; death defeated by Immanuel. Now He s standing in the place of honor crowned with glory on the highest throne, Interceding for His own beloved til His Father calls to bring them home. Then the skies will part as the trumpet sounds hope of heaven or fear of hell; But the Bride will run to her Lover s arms, giving glory to Immanuel. 11 welcome and God-speed on your journey. Should you be from our community, and have no church home, we invite you to make Faith your church home. Greeting you this morning: Before Early Service After Early Service Before Late Service Terry & Arlene Naasz Dale & Mary Heidelberger Tom & Jackie Smith Eldon & Betty Lindquist David & Janice Johnson Freda Peters Preaching this morning is Reverend Joshua Baumann, our Associate Pastor. Reverend Cory Rajek, our Senior Pastor, is on a short-term mission trip to Hong Kong. Holy Communion is celebrated at our 8:20 service this Sunday. In this Sacrament, our Lord brings us strength and forgiveness to be about His vision and mission. Those confirmed Lutherans who come to the Sacrament of the Altar today are asked to read the communion side of our information card found in the pew rack and to sign the bottom of the reverse side so that our communion records might be complete. IN REGARD TO HOLY COMMUNION: According to Scripture, Holy Communion should be celebrated by those who are: United in a common faith (1 Cor. 10:16-17, 21-22; Rom. 16:17); Repentant of sins (1 Cor. 5:11, Matt. 18:17-18); Able to examine their lives (1 Cor. 11:27-29); and believe that in this precious meal they receive the true body and blood of Jesus given and shed for the forgiveness of their sins (Luke 22:19-22). Since Scripture teaches that those people who do not fully understand the meaning of this meal eat and drink to their own harm (1Cor. 11:27-29), and because the Lord s Supper is the supreme act of stating our unity in faith and doctrine, we would ask those people who are visiting with us to please speak with one of our pastors, before communing, in order that we might fulfill our responsibility of properly instructing people in the right use of the precious Sacrament. Adult Bible Study This morning Pastor Baumann will lead a discussion of life issues at 9:45 in the CFLC. Please join us. Their frequent connection to medical technology can make them seem like recent developments and advances in understanding physiology and pharmaceuticals have made abortion and euthanasia more efficient and available of late. But these circumstances have been causing society s difficulties and providing opportunities to proclaim the Gospel since ancient times. Rev. Michael W. Salemink, executive 14
