And of course a jolly old thank you to our Dear Saint Nicholas for paying us a visit as well! 2 2 Sam s Desk Well, we have made it to the New Year and I hope everyone had a good Holiday Season. We had quite a few schools come here and sing in Dec. I hope you were able to use the Calendar that comes with this Newsletter to make your way to the activities we put on for you. Ali also puts the Activities on the Whiteboards in the hallways so that you can see in the morning if there have been any changes. And there is the Large Whiteboard by the Nurses desk too, where we have the whole month posted. Next to the Large Whiteboard is the sign up sheets for the individual events. Check it out. The best part of January for me is that the days are getting longer. We have passed winter solstice. We are heading towards Spring, and Spring is pretty much my favorite time of year. We have a few dark months to go and I am going to try to have a gently used clothing Sale in February. So if you are cleaning out your closets and find any clothes that you won t be using please feel free to drop them off at my office. Or call and I can come pick them up. My direct line to my office is If I don t answer, you can leave your message. If you have clothes to pick up, or you just need me to call you back. We are looking at having a new music night. I need to work out a few details first and then I hope to have yet a third night of music for you all to enjoy. Crib Tournament will be Sat. February 3, 2018 at 1:00pm. It will be in the Green Bingo area. The cost will be $10.00 per entry and there will be prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. This also includes snacks during the break. Amanda said that she would volunteer to come do the Tournaments with you. That probably means her mom Karen will come and maybe Grandma too. Remember if you have any ideas of activities you would like to see on the Activity Calendar, just pop in and let me know. I will make every effort to accommodate requests. Birthstone of the Month: Garnet The word garnet is derived from the Latin word granatum which means seed, because of the gemstone s resemblance to the red seeds of the pomegranate. Garnet is very similar to the ruby, less reputable jewelers have tried to pass off garnets, which are less expensive, as rubies which are considered some of the rarest gemstones. The difference between two is subtle but simple. If the stone has earthy tones such as a brown or orange tinge it's a garnet! The Flower of The Month: Carnation The carnation is much like the rose, each colour meaning something. Pink carnations represent affection, red carnations symbolize love, white carnations mean pure love, yellow carnations signify rejection or disappointment. However, unlike roses, carnations can come in the striped variety and striped carnations express regret that a love is not shared.

5 5 Blurb from Ali Welcome to 2018! Is it just me or did 2017 fly by faster than Santa himself? I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend, holiday or not a long weekend is always nice. Minus 31 weather? Not so nice. It seemed like it was hovering around minus 12 and then BAM! Back to our regular winter weather, I suppose. This month we're back on track with our Dollarama, Walmart and Shopper's trips and we'll be going to A&W for lunch! There aren't really any statutory holidays we Canadians celebrate this month, aside from New Years. It looks to be a much calmer month than December, which was insanely stuffed to the brim with outings and visitors and gifts. I never say no to a little Calm time. I'm really hoping to incorporate more painting and more painting related activities. Whenever scheduling allows it I'd like to make painting a Friday morning thing. I also need to mention that you don't need any artistic skills to take part in these activities, it's just for the fun of it! There's no competition, no one is here to judge or be judged. Besides - it's art, and not just that but YOUR art! Art is subjective, and flexing those creative expression muscles is great for the mind and the soul. Something else we're back on track with is our Matamao meetings! These meetings are for discussions on fundraising, current events, bus trips, improvements and changes in the lodge, etc. They take place the last Wednesday of every month at 3:00, normally held in the board room which is just across the hall from my activity office. Lastly, get ready for the first Progressive Bingo game of 2018!

6 6 Short Story: The Church Gossip Pa Mildred, the church gossip, and self-appointed monitor of the church's morals, was notorious for sticking her nose into other people's business and imposing her moral judgement and opinions upon them. Most members did not approve of her extra curricular activities, but feared her enough to maintain their silence. She made one mistake, however, when she accused Frank, a new member of the church, of being an alcoholic after she saw his old pickup truck parked in front of the town's only bar one afternoon. The next day after the service she emphatically told Frank (and several others) that everyone seeing Frank's old truck there "WOULD KNOW EXACTLY WHAT HE WAS DOING!" Frank, a man of few words, stared at her for a moment and just turned and walked away. He didn't explain, defend, or deny. He said nothing. Later that evening, Frank quietly parked his pickup in front of Mildred's house... Walked home... and left it there all night.

7 7 Short Story: The Predictions One night a father tucked his little daughter into bed. As he was leaving he heard the girl say her pray, "thank you for mommy and daddy, and please may my uncle Joe rest in peace." The father thought this was odd but shrugged it off and went to bed. The phone rang early the next morning to share the news that uncle Joe had passed away. The father was a little surprised but thought it was nothing more than a coincidence. That night he said sweet dreams to his daughter and once again heard her prayer as he left her room. "Thank you for mommy and daddy, and please may my Granny rest in peace." Sure enough that afternoon news of Granny's passing reached the family. That night when he put his daughter to bed the father really debated whether his daughter could predict the death of family members. That third night the father said goodnight to his daughter and waited outside her bedroom door to hear her prayer. He thought that night would be the test, if she was right a third time there would be no denying that his daughter had a gift. "Dear God," the little girl started, "thank you for my mommy and daddy and please may my daddy rest in peace." The father's gut dropped to the floor, his heart beating out of his chest in shock and fear that he would be next. He was so convinced he was about to die any minute that he left for work three hours earlier than normal and spent the entire day at work in his office. He didn't do any work, he couldn't tear his eyes away from the clock. With every tick of the second hand his heart beat a little faster. He arrived home well after midnight just to be safe. When he woke up he was astonished that he was still alive. His daughter's predictions were merely a coincidence! He went into the kitchen to make breakfast and found his wife already up. "Honey!" He sat down at the table and began to eagerly tell his wife the whole story but when she turned around he could tell she was visibly upset. He asked his wife what was wrong as she started to cry, "the mailman died right on our front porch yesterday morning!" Page 7 NEWSLETTER TITLE

8 8 Friday, January 5th At 10:30 Kathy Hicks will be coming to host another Paint Party! I will be posting a sign up sheet as we need to now how much supplies to get so please be sure to get your name down - you can always cancel even if it's last minute. 1:30 we will be hosting Social Hour. This is a fundraising activity for us and the proceeds go the Parkland Lodge. We serve drinks (water, juice, soft drinks, wine, beer) and chips while selling Nevada pull-tab tickets. And as always, at 3:00 the Sister Stichers knitting group will meet by the fire Friday, January 19th we will be doing a really neat watercolour project! It's called Glued Watercolour and it's super easy, no artistic skills are required. We'll be using palettes of watercolours to pain in the picture outlined in glue! It's that easy, and the end results will make anyone look like an avant-garde artist. At 1:30 we'll be holding out Social Hour, Don't forget to come support the Lodge! You might win it big, but only if you play. Then at 3:00 the Sister Stichers knitting group meet once again by the fire! Page 8 NEWSLETTER TITLE

9 9 Here are our Door Décor champions! Even though we had a First, Second and Third prize for each wing and honourable mentions, it was still a challenge narrowing down finalists. They were all so unique and beautiful it was hard to pick!
