Dear First Alcoa Family, As my time as interim youth director comes to an end, I am reflecting on the many ways you have supported the youth ministry since last fall. I am truly grateful for the prayers you offered in this time of transition. I am also thankful for the cookies you provided, the scholarships you funded, and the students you supported along the way. To the volunteers who served alongside me, I cannot thank you enough. These amazing individuals sacrificed time with their own families (and sometimes their sanity!) to chaperone trips, make meals, and share their witness with our youth. Because of their tireless efforts, our students felt the love of Jesus Christ in so many tangible ways. I am thankful for the opportunity to serve as your interim youth director and my faith has been strengthened during my time here. Please continue your efforts to support youth ministry at First Alcoa. I know God has big things in store. Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or imagine. -Ephesians 3:20 Sincerely, 1st UMC Alcoa Staff Changes & Appreciation Caroline Lamar Pastor-Staff Parish Relations Committee: It s been a busy few months for the members of the committee, but the work has resulted in two excellent hires for the Church. After serving as the Interim Music Director, the Committee decided to make Blake Estes the permanent music director. Blake is already trying to grow and expand the Music Ministry and we are thankful for he and his wife Bonnie and thrilled to have them here. The second hire is a Youth Director. But, before we announce that, the committee would like to extend its gratitude to Caroline Lamar for her work as the Interim Youth Director. Caroline stepped into her role at a critical time and the youth program never missed a beat. She also, along with Ava Neubert, led the search for a permanent Youth Director and she was vital in the process from initially screening resumes to working with the final three candidates as they presented a Youth Program on Wednesday evening. The credit for the Youth Director search belongs to Caroline and Ava and we express our thanks for their selfless efforts in securing the best person for the job. Which resulted in the hiring of new Youth Director Jim Gass. Jim comes to Alcoa First from Broadway United Methodist Church in Maryville where he has served on a part-time basis for several years. Jim, his wife and child will begin their ministry at Alcoa on June 18 th. We plan to formally introduce him to the congregation the following Sunday June 24 th and invite everyone to welcome Jim and his family into this role. Mark Brown, PSPR Chair

5 VBS ADULT BIBLE STUDY LED BY REX ROGERS Two of Paul s earliest letters are 1st and 2nd Thessalonians. These two letters were written to real people who were experiencing real problems in a world that was not friendly to their Christian faith. You and I can easily identify with these people because we live in a similar world and face many of the same problems. Paul goes on to remind the Thessalonians and us of the hope that comes in the return of Jesus Christ as he points out various events that must precede the Second Coming. Then the Apostle John tells us of the glory that the Second Coming will bring as we look to the Book of Revelation for insight into the future insight into judgment and the ultimate triumph of God over evil. 8 REJOICE! As I write this article, it is May 14, If any of you have been watching the television today or are good with world history, you know that today is a very special day in the history of the nation of Israel. Today marks the 70th anniversary of the rebirth of the Nation of Israel, of May 14, Today is the day that 70 years ago, Israel regained their homeland and became a nation gathered back together. The United States of America is celebrating this 70th Anniversary of Israel by dedicating our US Embassy in Jerusalem, Israel. In doing so, we are recognizing Jerusalem as the official capital of the state of Israel. On this day as well, Dr. Cormac and Fiona O Duffy are on Mt. Scopus, Israel for the unveiling of a monument being dedicated in celebration of this 70 years. On the monument is a quote from the Pope and the monument represents the unity of Catholic and Protestant alike in our love for the people of Israel and our support of Israel. Today, I have had an old song in my head that I have been singing the chorus of. The lyrics of the song come from Isaiah chapter 55, which is a song celebrating the return of the Israelites to their homeland. Please, take a moment to read the chapter in its entirety. Chapter 11, is the verse that is the theme verse of Gideon s International, who are responsible for the placing of God s Word so this my word that goes out from my mouth: it will not return void but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it. Isn t it a blessing to know that God s Word is always true, and always effective? There is assurance in reading, quoting and claiming God s Word. With Israel back in their homeland, we are literally seeing Bible Prophecy fulfilled before us. Isaiah 11:12 reads He will raise a banner for the nations and gather the exiles of Israel; he will assemble the scattered people Judah from the four quarters of the earth. Friends this is what we are witnessing. God has brought his people back together in their homeland. It is being fulfilled before our very eyes. So wonderful is the reclaiming of the homeland that not only are the people rejoicing, but even God s creation is rejoicing. I just love the way in which Isaiah personifies God s creation in verse 12 of chapter 55 of Isaiah reads You will go out with joy and be led forth in peace, the mountains and the hills will burst into song before your and all the trees of the field will clap their hands Wow! Isaiah wants the reader to understand the significance of this occurrence of the return of the Jews to their homeland. It is such a grand experience that all of the land and vegetation of Israel burst forth in song, dance and praise. The nation of Israel is back home and so today, we see via television and the internet that Israel has been having a party for the past few days in celebration of their freedom as a people in their own land. You and I, too, have reason to celebrate in that we are united with Christ and at home with God as people who have been redeemed. We have been set free from the burden of sin, bought back with a price and brought home to be with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. People are professing Christ as Savior. All of Springbrook should be rejoicing. The tress of Springbrook are clapping their hands and the Smoky Mountains are bursting forth in song. It is Spring time in Springbrook. It is time to celebrate and rejoice. Students are graduating from school and many people will soon be vacationing. The days are longer, giving us more time to enjoy the great outdoors. God has blessed us in so many ways. We need to give Him all the praise and thanks that is due him. So, "go out with joy and be led forth in peace. Go forth and tell others the good news of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Go forth and bring others with you to church. Go forth and rejoice in Christ our Lord. Shalom, Pastor Ty
9 Dear Church Family, I hope this finds you having a wonderful and blessed day!! There are so many wonderful stories behind our great hymns of the faith, and I wanted to share one with you. The story behind one of our beautiful and beloved hymns, It Is Well with My Soul. Horatio G. Spafford was a successful lawyer and businessman in Chicago with a lovely family - a wife, Anna, and five children. However, they were not strangers to tears and tragedy. Their young son died with pneumonia in 1871, and in that same year, much of their business was lost in the great Chicago fire. Yet, God in His mercy and kindness allowed the business to flourish once more. On November 21, 1873, the french ocean liner Ville du Havre was crossing the Atlantic from the U.S. to Europe with 313 passengers on board. Among the passengers were Mrs. Spafford and their four daughters. Although Mr. Spafford had planned to go with his family, he found it necessary to stay in Chicago to help solve an unexpected business problem. He told his wife he would join her and their children in Europe a few days later. His plan was to take another ship. About four days into the crossing of the Atlantic, the Ville du Havre collided with a powerful iron-hulled Scottish ship, the Loch Earn. Suddenly, all of those on board were in grave danger. Anna hurriedly brought her four children to the deck. She knelt there with Annie, Margaret Lee, Bessie and Tanetta and prayed that God would spare them if that could be His will, or to make them willing to endure whatever awaited them. Within approximately 12 minutes, the Ville du Havre slipped beneath the dark waters of the Atlantic, carrying with it 226 of the passengers including the four Spafford children. A sailor, rowing a small boat over the spot where the ship went down, spotted a woman floating on a piece of the wreckage. It was Anna, still alive. He pulled her into the boat, and they were picked up by another large vessel which, nine days later, landed them in Cardiff, Wales. From there she wired her husband a message, Saved alone, what shall I do? Mr. Spafford later framed the telegram and placed it in his office. Another of the survivors, Pastor Weiss, later recalled Anna saying, God gave me four daughters. Now they have been taken from me. Someday I will understand why. Mr. Spafford booked passage on the next available ship and left to join his grieving wife. With the ship about four days out, the captain called Spafford to his cabin and told him they were over the place where his children went down. According to Bertha Spafford Vester, a daughter born after the tragedy, Spafford wrote It Is Well with My Soul while on this journey. When peace like a river attendeth my way, when sorrow like sea billows roll, Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say, It is well, it is well with my soul. Chorus: It is well with my soul, it is well, it is well with my soul. Anna gave birth to three more children, one of which died at age four with dreaded pneumonia. In August 1881, the Spaffords moved to Jerusalem. Mr. Spafford died and is buried in that city.
