Prelude Gathering Song May the Peoples Praise You You have called us out of darkest night into your glorious light, That we may sing the wonders of the risen Christ. May our ev ry breath retell the grace that broke into our strife, With boundless love and deepest joy, with endless life (Chorus) May the peoples praise you, let the nations be glad. All Your blessing comes that we may praise, May praise the name of Jesus. All the earth is yours and all within, each harvest is your own, And from your hand we give to you to make Christ known. May the seeds of mercy grow in us for those who have not heard; May songs of praise build lives of grace to spread your Word. (Chorus) This our holy priv lege to declare your praises and Your name; To every nation, tribe and tongue, your church proclaims. (Chorus) (Bridge) Holy, holy is the Lord Almighty. Worthy, worthy is the Lamb who was slain. Holy, holy is the Lord Almighty. All creation praise your glorious name. 4 Welcome Rev. Nathan Francis (Please sign the Friendship Register form and pass to your neighbor.) Arden Focus Youth Service Outreach Week (SOW) (see page 13) Greeting of One Another GOD CALLS US TO WORSHIP HIM Call to Worship Rev. Dwight Basham Minister: ALL: Praise the LORD! Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever! Psalm 106:1 Hymn of Adoration Lord, with Glowing Heart I d Praise Thee No. 80 Prayer of Invocation (concluding with the Lord s Prayer) Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever and ever. Amen. 4

Songs of Praise Jesus, Lover of My Soul Jesus, lover of my soul, Let me to thy bosom fly, While the nearer waters roll, While the tempest still is high: Hide me, O my Savior, hide, till the storm is past; Safe into the haven guide, receive my soul at last! Other refuge have I none; Hangs my helpless soul on thee; Leave, ah! leave me not alone, Still support and comfort me. All my trust on thee is stayed, help from thee I bring; Cover my defenseless head with the shadow of thy wing. Thou, O Christ, are all I want; More than all in thee I find; Raise the fallen, cheer the faint, Heal the sick and lead the blind. Just and holy is thy name; I am all unrighteousness; False and full of sin I am, thou full of truth and grace. Plenteous grace with thee is found, Grace to cover all my sin; Let the healing streams abound; Make and keep me pure within. Thou of life the fountain art; let me take of thee; Spring thou up within my heart. Rise to all eternity. Text: Charles Wesley Music: Greg Thompson 2000 Greg Thompson Music 5

There Is a Hope There is a hope that burns within my heart, That gives me strength for ev'ry passing day; A glimpse of glory now revealed in meager part, yet drives all doubt away. I stand in Christ, with sins forgiv'n, and Christ in me, the hope of heav'n. My highest calling and my deepest joy, To make his will my home. There is a hope that lifts my weary head, A consolation strong against despair; And when the world has plunged me in its deepest pit, I find the Savior there. Through present suff'rings, future's fear, he whispers courage in my ear. For I am safe in everlasting arms, and faith will lead me home. There is a hope that stands the test of time, That lifts my eyes beyond the beck'ning grave To see the matchless beauty of a day divine, When I behold his face. When suff'rings cease and sorrows die, And ev'ry longing satisfied. Then joy unspeakable will flood my soul, for I am truly home. Mark Edwards and Stuart Townend 2007 Thankyou Music Corporate Confession of Faith Rev. Francis Minister: How are we to understand the Bible s teaching of predestination? All: Before the creation of the world, according to his eternal, unchangeable plan and the hidden purpose and good pleasure of his will, God has chosen in Christ those of mankind who are predestined to life and to everlasting glory. He has done this solely out of his own mercy and love and completely to the praise of his wonderful grace. This choice was completely independent of his foreknowledge of how his created beings would be or act. Neither their faith nor good works nor perseverance had any part in influencing his selection. [Adapted from Westminster Confession of Faith, 3.5] 6

Corporate Confession of Sin GOD GRACIOUSLY RENEWS OUR HEARTS Merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart and mind and strength. We have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. In your mercy forgive what we have been, help us amend what we are, and direct what we shall be, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Through Christ, our Lord, amen. Silent Confession of Sin The Worship Sourcebook [cf. Matthew 22:37-40] Pastoral Prayer & Assurance of Pardon We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. For one who has died has been set free from sin. Romans 6:6-7 (Children s Church will resume August 12. Pew bags for children are available at the entrance to the sanctuary.) 11 ANNOUNCEMENTS Today we welcome to the pulpit Arden s Associate Pastor of Music and Congregational Care, Rev. Dwight Basham. Our Senior Pastor, Craig Sheppard, is away with his family on vacation. Read with us! Looking for a good read for summer? Arden Women's Ministries invites you to read a few good books this summer and get together for fellowship and discussion. June's pick is None Like Him, by Jen Wilkin. Discuss Thursday, June 28, 7:00 PM, at Jean-Marie VunCannon's house (109 Stonecrest Drive, Asheville). Kids, join us Sunday mornings for our Children's Combined Summer Sunday School class! Children, PreK-5th grade, will be gathering in the Multipurpose Room at 9:30am for a combined Sunday School class for 8 weeks, now through August 5th. We will be studying Lord, Teach Me To Pray. If you have any questions, please contact Michele or Kathy in the Children s Ministry. Our children need us! Our kids are as uniquely and diversely made as the adults and youth in our Arden church family. That is why we believe that there is not just one type of person equipped to minister to our kids. Our kids need a mix of men and women, young and old who are willing to walk with them in these formidable, faith-building years. We want our children to sense that we consider growing with them a great delight. We currently have many needs for Sunday School, Children s Church, Catechism and Nursery. Will you please prayerfully consider joining us in raising up our children? Please contact Kathy or Michele in Children s Ministry if you can. Thank you! Online giving is now available! APC can now receive financial gifts through our website (ardenpres.org). You can find the Give Online link both at the top of our homepage and under the Live Webcast tab. 12

DENOMINATIONAL NEWS Three of Arden s pastors (Nathan Francis, Gabe Malloy, and Craig Sheppard) have just returned from the 46th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in America which was held in Atlanta, GA. The G.A. is the highest court of the PCA and is both an important annual business meeting and a rich time of fellowship with other pastors and elders from around the country. One of the highlights was the unanimous election of Rev. Irwyn Ince as the moderator (the first ever African American elected to this role.) The most significant decision of the G.A. was in reference to the Book of Church Order chapter 59 on marriage. In light of the current cultural and moral debate occurring in the US and around the world, the assembly voted to make this chapter constitutionally binding. The Westminster Confession of Faith, which is also part of the PCA s constitution, expresses the PCA s theological views on marriage in chapter 24, affirming that marriage is between one man and one woman. However, while the Confession defined marriage in this way, BCO 59 did not have the corresponding binding authority regarding the Confession s view of marriage. This change further guards this important Biblical understanding on marriage. The financial update will be included in next week s bulletin upon Dan Berger s return from vacation. Through our New Commandment ministry, men of the church meet monthly to visit and provide assistance to members. Their focus is on single mothers, widows and widowers, and seniors. Through our Mercy Ministry, our deacons work with the Church Business Administrator to help with unmet financial and physical needs. If you, or someone you know, could be helped by either New Commandment or Mercy Ministry support, please contact Mark Gould at mbgould2@ gmail.com or (828) Details on these ministries are available in the Narthex or on the ardenpres.org web page. 14

We seek to grow in our knowledge and love of the Word, to corporately worship our Triune God reverently and joyfully, and to lovingly communicate the gospel to a lost, yet watchful world. We strive to live out our faith through the active application of our time, talents, and resources in ministry and service to our church, our local community, and across the globe.
