DECEMBER 2017 ST. PAUL LUTHERAN CHURCH REV. TODD JENKS, PASTOR 61015TH ST. AMES, IA LORI JENKS, PRESCHOOL DIRECTOR PRESCHOOL VISIT OUR WEBSITE AT A Letter from your Pastor As we celebrate the 500 th anniversary year of the Reformation, we remember how Martin Luther wanted people to focus their lives on the Word of God. Therefore, this year during Advent, our sermon theme for our Advent services will focus on The Word and the Wonder. We will ponder God s Word as it was proclaimed to all the different parties who played a part in the nativity from Zechariah to John, from Mary to Joseph, from the shepherds to Simeon and Anna. I invite you to take a break in the middle of your busy week to join us for our special evening Advent devotional reflection services on Wednesday nights at 7:00 p.m. on December 6, 13 and 20. These services are about 45 minutes in length, and will include the series homily as well as a children s sermon for the kids. The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. May God bless you as you think about Jesus and how much He loves us, that He left the splendor of heaven to experience the squalor of earth on your behalf! Jesus was born to bring you the first Christmas gift, and the best Christmas gift! And when the time had fully come, God sent His Son, born of a woman, born under law, to redeem those under law, that we might receive the full rights of sons (Galatians 4:5). Your pastor, Pastor Jenks Christmas Service Worship Times Christmas Eve worship will be held at 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. Remember how the angels broke the stillness of the night as they appeared to the shepherds to proclaim the joyful news of our Savior s birth? Come experience the wonder and glow of this special night as we carol by candlelight and as we hear the joyful story of the angels announcement: I bring you good news of great joy, which shall be for all the people today in the city of David a Savior has been born to you! Christmas Day communion service will be held at 10:00 a.m. What better way to begin Christmas Day than with a special celebration of our Savior s birth? Without Christ, there is no Christ-mas! Before you eat your Christmas feast, come to the Lord s table for the wondrous feast of His Supper. Come celebrate the good news: You are to give Him the name Jesus, because He will save His people from their sins. Morning Worship Time on December 24 and December 31 On these two Sundays, because many of our members will be traveling and out of town for Christmas and for New Year s, we will utilize our special holiday week-end schedule. There will be only one worship service at 10 a.m. on December 24 and on December 31. There will be no education hour held on these two Sundays. January 7 we return to our regular schedule. Wednesday Night Advent Worship Services Wednesday nights in December -- December 5, 12 and you are invited to worship with us at 7:00 p.m. as we take a break in the middle of each week to focus upon the reason for the season. This year we focus on The Word and the Wonder, pondering how the wonder of Jesus birth was proclaimed through God s Word to all the people involved in the events of the nativity. Advent evening services last approximately 45 minutes and offer a respite from this hectic time of year to hear the still small voice calling from the manger. O come, let us adore Him. 4 Page 4 DECEMBER 2017 Missional Communities Are you ready? Ready to be discipled to be a follower of Jesus in our local community? Ready to be trained to seek God's Kingdom and join Jesus' mission as part of your daily life? Ready for deeper relationships with other like-minded members of our congregation? These questions are related to the topic of missional communities as introduced by Pastor Greg Finke in the second workshop at St. Paul on Joining Jesus on His Mission. After the workshop, two Missional Communities have started at St. Paul. These groups have been meeting regularly the past several months to support each other and share what we are learning on our mission with Jesus. In order to pursue the Great Commission of Jesus (make disciples of all nations Matt. 28:19-20), we would like to set up additional missional communities so more and more people will be discipled through relationships with other every day missionaries. In January, members of these first groups will be inviting you to join them in a missional community. What is a missional community? What are the requirements/expectations? The structure and requirements of a missional community are very simple: meet in a small group (10-12 individuals) on a regular basis for as long as Jesus leads them. be willing to share your experiences as you walk with Jesus. groups will be led by one of the members of the first two missional communities. What are the benefits for you in being part of a missional community at St. Paul: gaining clarity about my true identity and purpose in Christ receiving training for making the mission of God my personal mission as well becoming more experienced and confident in living out my faith for the good of others in the community becoming more intentional and consistent about following the person of Jesus in my everyday life receiving support, encouragement and accountability for following Jesus and joining Him every day The goal of a missional community is to provide you support and encouragement in your personal walk with Christ and as you share Jesus love with others in your daily life. If your answers to the questions in the first paragraph are YES then please talk with members of the Discipleship Team or Pastor Jenks about becoming a part of one of our missional communities. See photos on next page of two of the Missional Community groups.

Page 5 DECEMBER 2017 Our two pilot Missional Community groups. Want to know more about what it s like to be in a missional community? Ask any of the members of these 2 pilot groups. Get ready to join the fun and fellowship when more groups kick off in January. Bucket List Recap "HIS Bucket...your list"... Janelle and Ellen had a a great time creating "party buckets", with the help of Thrivent grant money, for the people of St. Paul to use and to enjoy. They created a "bucket" for several occasions, from Tea for Two, Back Yard Fun and Games, An American Celebration, Swim party, Movie Night, filling the buckets with everything, including gift cards for food and extra supplies, needed to Join Jesus on His Mission. All they had to do was invite people to join them. There was hesitation at first, but as the summer progressed, so did the number of people who wanted to Join Jesus' Mission by sharing a "bucket". We sent out 12 buckets or various sizes and heard back from most of the participants. Most asked that we not share their story, but our young bucket takers, Tessa and Tate, were eager to share that they had fun with family members and then again with kids in their neighborhood. "The little children will lead us" came to mind as their enthusiasm was catching. They were excited because they had the means to plan and have a party without having to ask Mom for much. Another family took parts of their bucket on vacation with them as they visited family. Another participant asked someone to have coffee with them at Starbucks...the coffee was on us...the conversation a plus. We want to thank everyone who participated this summer and we hope by next summer, you all will have thought of even more ways we can share a "bucket" and that there will be more people who have stories to share. The thing that we learned this summer is that we do not know the whole story, it is not the size of the story that counts, and we may never know how the story ends...that is not up to us...we only know that we are Joining Jesus on His Mission and that He is in charge and leading the way. What an exciting place to be!!!

Page 6 DECEMBER 2017 HOPE Gift Market On Sunday, November 12, the first CY/Herky Duct Tape Challenge took place. Participants could purchase 1 foot pieces of duct tape for $1 and place it on the rival mascot of their choice. A total of $87 was collected. Thank you to all who helped SECURE a trip for our youth to the National Youth Gathering in Minneapolis in 2019! The Board of Human Care wishes to say THANK YOU to all those who participated in our HOPE Gift Market. It is through your generosity that we can Help Other People Everywhere! If you have not yet contributed, we will collect order forms and checks through Sunday, December 3rd.

Page 7 DECEMBER 2017 Intentional Christmas? Family Life The word intention is defined as something done on purpose. Each day your family may do something intentional. I might go as far as to say that you may have, or had, children who may have done something to intentionally hurt their sibling, or at least that is what you heard! But can a holiday be intentional? Let s look at this, can the holiday like Christmas be intentional? Absolutely! We may be intentional when it comes to our Christmas list, when we buy the presents for our children and family members. We have a purpose to bake, to decorate, and to be Merry and Bright! That purpose is the opportunity to be with friends and family at a time of year that is Joyful and, for some, Peaceful. Having an Intentional Christmas could also come into play with our devotions. This is the time of year where we can take that time with our family each night and give it more purpose. This is the season to set aside a devotional time to discuss the birth of our Savior with our children and families. Make the moment count, make it intentional and plan out what you and your family will do to devote this time to Christ. God grant you, The light of Christmas, which is faith; The warmth of Christmas, which is love; The belief in Christmas, which is truth; And the all of Christmas, which is Christ. Have a Very Merry Intentional Christmas! Thomas Wilson, Family Life Intern ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Campfire Night Where s the Light? The Family Life office had another successful event this past month. Roughly 40 members, family, youth and adults came together in a great time of fellowship on November 4 th at McFarland Park. The temperature was just right for a sing-a-long around the campfire. It was rough at the beginning, but after the lanterns showed up it was all bright. Thanks to everyone who came out and enjoyed the evening! I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did!

DECEMBER 2017 Page 8 Stewardship He crowns the year with goodness, with plenty and with peace. There s no doubt that the weeks encompassing Thanksgiving, Advent and Christmas are favorites for many of us. We feast and enjoy special times of fellowship with friends and family. It is also the crowning period of another year, a natural time to reflect back on all that has transpired personally for us over the past months. Whatever the year held, one thing is certain: God was there for us every step of the way, offering plenty of goodness and peace. We come before God s altar during December to celebrate the birth of the little Christ Child. God sent Jesus as His ultimate gift to mankind quietly, humbly and without fanfare. But Jesus life on Earth was anything but quiet and insignificant. His teachings and ultimate xx death and resurrection turned hopeless, sinful lives into lives of promise and blessed assurance of eternal life with God. What can we give God in return for His wonderful gift? Nothing that we do would ever compare to God s gift but God doesn t expect that from us, anyway. All He expects is that we turn our hearts over to Him filled with faith, love and gratitude, while proclaiming the birth of Jesus to others who need God s gift, too. As we reflect on the past year and anticipate another Christmas, we pray that God would lead us to return thanks to Him through acts of joyous service for Him and others, and thank-offerings to help further His kingdom on Earth. Your hearts lay down before Him, when at His feet you fall. And with your lives adore Him, who gave His life for all.

DECEMBER 2017 Page 9 Education and Youth R_fl_]tions on th_ Jr Youth G[th_ring On October St. Paul had 3 youth and 2 adults attend Nailed It, the IDW Jr. Youth Gathering in Des Moines. They wanted to share a little about their experiences: I had a lot of fun. The songs and singing were meaningful and I learned a lot about God and was able to praise him. The activities were really fun like getting a Bible to give to someone after the gathering and there was a fun trivia game that taught us a lot. The free time with laser tag, inflatables, games, and painting pumpkins was really fun. They were really funny, made you want to pay attention to learning, and the meaningful things about God and the Bible. I was really grateful that I got to go because of the great experiences. -Tate This was a great experience to get to watch our youth take in such meaningful messages. The whole gathering was very well planned out and there were so many youth enjoying every minute. At the end of the day it was incredible to hear all that our youth soaked up and learned! -Angi I had a great time at the Junior Youth Gathering. It was very fun. I highly recommend going. I am looking forward to going next year! -Kylie Nailed It was probably the best weekend I ve ever had! It was so much fun, and there were so many nice people in one place. Everyone there was amazing and I met a lot of new people. I could ve stayed there forever... it is for sure something I would do again and that I will never forget! I met so many new friends and grew a lot closer to God and in my faith!! -Maddie I had a wonderful time and a great experience at the Junior High Youth Gathering as a chaperone for our youth here at St. Paul. I believe all 3 youth had a great time and I would say the only thing I would have liked to have changed was to have had more youth from our church attend with us. So next year that will be my goal! -Stephanie xx The youth that will be attending the National Youth Gathering in the summer of 2019 are selling candy bars to raise funds. The kids are working hard to raise the money to go and this is a tasty way you can help them get there. The candy bars are $1 each and come in the following varieties: dark chocolate, milk chocolate, crispy, almond, cookies and cream, and caramel toffee. The youth will be selling them until they run out. If you are interested in purchasing, please contact Amy B or Michelle V. Thank you for your support of our youth!!

Book to Know to Help You Grow Our next Book club meeting is in February. We will discuss Her Daughter s Dream by Francine Rivers. Barnes and Noble says: In the dramatic conclusion to the New York Times best seller Her Mother s Hope, Francine Rivers delivers a rich and deeply moving story about the silent sorrows that can tear a family apart and the grace and forgiveness that can heal even the deepest wounds. Growing up isn t easy for little Carolyn Arundel. With her mother, Hildemara, quarantined to her room with tuberculosis, Carolyn forms a special bond with her oma Marta, who moves in to care for the household. But as tensions between Hildie and Marta escalate, Carolyn believes she is to blame. When Hildie returns to work and Marta leaves, Carolyn and her brother grow up as latchkey kids in a world gripped by the fear of the Cold War. Everyone is invited to read this book and join us for the discussion. *Our church library has a copy of this book. The Ames Public Library has 2 printed copies and 4 ebook copies.
