3 Exploring our Faith Today's Gospel narrative remembers Jesus' observation and reflection upon the generosity of the little people in His own day. Jesus pointed out the example of a poor widow who contributed to the Temple's charitable storehouse not from her excess, but from what she had to live on. Her generosity meant that she would have less to eat herself precisely in order that others would have at least something to live on. Jesus was subtly being critical of the wealthy, who, though they knew of the needs of so many around them, were not as willing to share their 'fortune'. The widow was an example of one who gave out of justice, thankful for what she already had and who demonstrated that her genuine gratitude led to true compassion for others The widow of the Gospel had a generous heart, as did the widow in the 1st Reading. They looked outward to the needs of others and gave what they could. Can we not do the same? We may not have much money to spare, but we can give in others ways - we can give our time, our care and concern for others. Sally Koch said, "Great opportunities to help others seldom come but small ones surround us every day." This is shown in our contacts with family, neighbours, fellow workers, service people, our community. They are manifested in simple acts such as taking the time to play a game/ read a book to our child; acknowledging and thanking a spouse for simple tasks done to keep a house running; taking a meal to a senior living by himself/herself; offering to babysit for a single mother so she can have some time to herself or a young couple so they can go to a movie without the expense of a babysitter; driving someone from a seniors' home to Mass each week; complimenting service given by the clerk at the grocery store. We should never get tired of doing little things for others. Sometimes these little things occupy the biggest part of their hearts. These may seem like small acts but they are important in that they bring joy and hope to others. They show that we are trying to live as followers of Jesus seen by how we speak, how we act and in how we treat others. Service to others is the rent one pays for one's room here on earth. Francis of Assisi once said, "Remember that when you leave this earth, you can take with you nothing that you have received - only what you have given - a full heart, enriched by honest service, love, sacrifice and courage." Let us be like the widows of the past as we generously share of our time and talents, quietly giving of ourselves in gratitude to a God who gave His all for us. Cathy Keirstead MEMORIAL SERVICE A memorial Mass will be held on Monday, November 19th at 6:30 p.m. for the families of persons who died at the Dr. Georges Dumont Hospital during the months of August, September and October This service will take place in the amphitheatre of the hospital. On Sunday, November 18th at 3:30 p.m. Immaculate Heart of Mary Church will host the screening of the faith- based film, Outcasts. Seven years in the making, this award- winning movie documents the hard struggle of the poor, living in five different countries across the globe. It is a powerful, disturbing, beautiful and inspiring account of the work of the ministry of the Franciscan Friars, whose apostolic mission it is to serve the poor. This is a film about Social Justice; a movie that unlocks the door of human suffering and offers hope for the greatest needs of mankind. The tickets are $15 each or 4 for $50. We ve had our new bulletin format for almost one year now and we do hope that parishioners like the new look. Advertisers on the bulletin sign on for one year at a time and so right now, there is a small window of time (deadline is Nov 20th) where new advertisers will be able to sign on. The advertising on the back of the bulletin really is an effective local way to advertise in a highly credible venue. We print 500+ bulletins every single week and so our bulletins go out to that many households 52 weeks a year and provide a good advertising location. Also, as we have all year long, we encourage our parishioners to support these advertisers, as they are supporting our parish grouping! Camino de Santiago For anyone who may have missed Al Daly s Camino presentation last June, he will do another on Sunday, December 2nd at 7:00 p.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, if there is enough interest. Using words and pictures, Al will describe his amazing pilgrimage walk the Camino de Santiago, that is, the Way of Saint James. If you ve not heard of this pilgrimage before, it takes place in northwestern Spain and has been a Catholic pilgrimage route since the 9th century!! Al s walk ended in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela where tradition has it, that the remains of Saint James are buried. Please call Al at to let him know if you are interested.

5 United Codiac Refugee Committee (UCRC) - A New Family Arriving on November 20th! Yes, you read that correctly! Our new family from Iraq is arriving on November 20th! The members of this family of seven (Mom, Dad and five children) have been refugees in Jordan for the past five years. The good news is that our UCRC volunteers have secured a duplex for them and are now collecting furnishings! Once the family arrives, we know that we will need volunteers to provide a variety of support. Also, we are very pleased to report that we have received a strong letter of support from the Honourable Ginette Petitpas- Taylor in our appeal around Haya Samaan (Manar Dawod s fiancée) and her parents application as refugees. Please continue to pray that Manar and Haya may soon be reunited and that her parents, too will be allowed to come to Canada. Calling all card players!! A coat was taken by mistake (and another left behind) at the IHM Card Party on Tuesday, November 6th! There is a lovely lady who had to leave the card party without her new coat (taupe in colour, with a hood and cuffed sleeves) and is anxious to get it back. Please everyone, look in your closets and ask fellow card players. Help us get the right coats back to the right people. Thank you. Immaculate Heart of Mary Church Card Party and Luncheon! Thank you so much to everyone who came out for a wonderful time together on Tuesday! We are blessed to have such a terrific group of volunteers who help put on this important IHM fundraiser and Kurt Cobb, once again, thank you for donating the delicious ham! Supporters, volunteers and card sharks together you helped raise over $1300 for IHMC! You guys are ACES! The IHMC Ladies Society would like to acknowledge all who helped make our Snowflake Bazaar such a great success! From those contributing their baking, crafts, books, etc to the Ladies and Gentlemen who worked on Friday and Saturday to prepare and of course, to all who came and made purchases. All was much appreciated! Thank you very much. The Knights will be hosting their annual Luncheon and Soup Sale after Mass on Sunday, Nov 18th. There will be a table setup as well, selling gift tags, cards and framed cards! This is all in support of Albert County Christmas Aid! Dinner Theatre Church Fundraiser - The Parson s Predicament A retired Parson, living in a senior s home, receives a letter by mistake informing him that he has been hired to be the Pastor of a church. The only stipulation is that he must be married! Now he is on the hunt for a wife and that is when the fun begins! Two shows! Saturday and Sunday, November 24th and 25th, both 6 p.m. Delicious chicken dinner, including dessert, tea/coffee/juice. Tickets are now on sale (Helen Vaughan, ) and are $25.00 each. Holy Family Church Fundraiser Alert! Holy Family will be selling 50/50 tickets before and after Saturday Masses from November 17th to December 2nd and then the draw for the winner will take place on December 9th at the Jonathan Ryu Christmas Concert!
