1 Tuesday of Proper 23 in Year 2 Morning Prayer Opening Sentence I was glad when they said to me, "Let us go to the house of the Lord." Psalm 122:1 Versicle and Response Lord, open our lips. And our mouth shall proclaim your praise. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Allelulia. Invitatory Come let us sing to the Lord;* let us shout for joy to the Rock of our salvation. Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving* and raise a loud shout to him with psalms. For the Lord is a great God,* and a great King above all gods. In his hand are the caverns of the earth,* and the heights of the hills are his also. The sea is his, for he made it,* and his hands have molded the dry land. Come, let us bow down, and bend the knee,* and kneel before the Lord our Maker. For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand.* Oh, that today you would hearken to his voice! 2 5 Braggarts cannot stand in your sight; * you hate all those who work wickedness. 6 You destroy those who speak lies; * the bloodthirsty and deceitful, O Lord, you abhor. 7 But as for me, through the greatness of your mercy I will go into your house; * I will bow down toward your holy temple in awe of you. 8 Lead me, O Lord, in your righteousness, because of those who lie in wait for me; * make your way straight before me. 9 For there is no truth in their mouth; * there is destruction in their heart; 10 Their throat is an open grave; * they flatter with their tongue. 11 Declare them guilty, O God; * let them fall, because of their schemes. 12 Because of their many transgressions cast them out, * for they have rebelled against you. 13 But all who take refuge in you will be glad; * they will sing out their joy for ever. 14 You will shelter them, * so that those who love your Name may exult in you. 15 For you, O Lord, will bless the righteous; * you will defend them with your favor as with a shield. 6 Domine, ne in furore 1 Lord, do not rebuke me in your anger; * do not punish me in your wrath. 2 Have pity on me, Lord, for I am weak; * heal me, Lord, for my bones are racked. 3 My spirit shakes with terror; * how long, O Lord, how long? 4 Turn, O Lord, and deliver me; * save me for your mercy's sake.

3 5 For in death no one remembers you; * and who will give you thanks in the grave? 6 I grow weary because of my groaning; * every night I drench my bed and flood my couch with tears. 7 My eyes are wasted with grief * and worn away because of all my enemies. 8 Depart from me, all evildoers, * for the Lord has heard the sound of my weeping. 9 The Lord has heard my supplication; * the Lord accepts my prayer. 10 All my enemies shall be confounded and quake with fear; * they shall turn back and suddenly be put to shame. Reading Jonah 1:1-17 1Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah son of Amittai, saying, 2 Go at once to Nineveh, that great city, and cry out against it; for their wickedness has come up before me. 3But Jonah set out to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. He went down to Joppa and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid his fare and went on board, to go with them to Tarshish, away from the presence of the Lord. 4 But the Lord hurled a great wind upon the sea, and such a mighty storm came upon the sea that the ship threatened to break up. 5Then the mariners were afraid, and each cried to his god. They threw the cargo that was in the ship into the sea, to lighten it for them. Jonah, meanwhile, had gone down into the hold of the ship and had lain down, and was fast asleep. 6The captain came and said to him, What are you doing sound asleep? Get up, call on your god! Perhaps the god will spare us a thought so that we do not perish. 7 The sailors* said to one another, Come, let us cast lots, so that we may know on whose account this calamity has come upon us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah. 8Then they said to him, Tell us why this calamity has come upon us. What is your occupation? Where do you come from? What is your country? And of what people are you? 9 I am a Hebrew, he replied. I worship the Lord, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land. 10Then the men were even more afraid, and said to him, What is this that you have done! For the men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of the Lord, because he had told them so. 11 Then they said to him, What shall we do to you, that the sea may quieten down for us? For the sea was growing more and more tempestuous. 12He said to them, Pick me up and throw me into the sea; then the sea will quieten down for you; for I know it is because of me that this great storm has come upon you. 13Nevertheless, the men rowed hard to bring the ship back to land, but they could not, for the sea grew more and more stormy against them. 14Then they cried out to the Lord, Please, O Lord, we pray, do not let us perish on account of this man s life. Do not make us guilty of innocent blood; for

4 you, O Lord, have done as it pleased you. 15So they picked Jonah up and threw him into the sea; and the sea ceased from its raging. 16Then the men feared the Lord even more, and they offered a sacrifice to the Lord and made vows. 17 *But the Lord provided a large fish to swallow up Jonah; and Jonah was in the belly of the fish for three days and three nights. Reading Luke 8: Now when Jesus returned, the crowd welcomed him, for they were all waiting for him. 41Just then there came a man named Jairus, a leader of the synagogue. He fell at Jesus feet and begged him to come to his house, 42for he had an only daughter, about twelve years old, who was dying. As he went, the crowds pressed in on him. 43Now there was a woman who had been suffering from haemorrhages for twelve years; and though she had spent all she had on physicians,* no one could cure her. 44She came up behind him and touched the fringe of his clothes, and immediately her haemorrhage stopped. 45Then Jesus asked, Who touched me? When all denied it, Peter* said, Master, the crowds surround you and press in on you. 46But Jesus said, Someone touched me; for I noticed that power had gone out from me. 47When the woman saw that she could not remain hidden, she came trembling; and falling down before him, she declared in the presence of all the people why she had touched him, and how she had been immediately healed. 48He said to her, Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace. 49 While he was still speaking, someone came from the leader s house to say, Your daughter is dead; do not trouble the teacher any longer. 50When Jesus heard this, he replied, Do not fear. Only believe, and she will be saved. 51When he came to the house, he did not allow anyone to enter with him, except Peter, John, and James, and the child s father and mother. 52They were all weeping and wailing for her; but he said, Do not weep; for she is not dead but sleeping. 53And they laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. 54But he took her by the hand and called out, Child, get up! 55Her spirit returned, and she got up at once. Then he directed them to give her something to eat. 56Her parents were astounded; but he ordered them to tell no one what had happened.

Canticle 18 Splendor and honor and kingly power * are yours by right, O Lord our God, For you created everything that is, * and by your will they were created and have their being; And yours by right, O Lamb that was slain, * for with your blood you have redeemed for God, From every family, language, people, and nation, * a kingdom of priests to serve our God. The Apostle's Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. The Lord be with you. Suffrages Show us your mercy, O Lord; And grant us your salvation. Clothe your ministers with righteousness; Let your people sing with joy. Give peace, O Lord, in all the world; For only in you can we live in safety. Lord, keep this nation under your care; And guide us in the way of justice and truth. 7 General Thanksgiving Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we your unworthy servants give you humble thanks for all your goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all whom you have made. We bless you for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for your immeasurable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And, we pray, give us such an awareness of your mercies, that with truly thankful hearts we may show forth your praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up our selves to your service, and by walking before you in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory throughout all ages.
