2 Page 2 Gospel Sharing John 20:19-23 On the evening of that first day of the week, when the doors were locked, where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, Peace be with you. When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you. And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained. Reflection When was the last time you experienced the Holy Spirit? Were you called to action or did you just feel his spirit? In this busy world do we listen to his call? Garage Sale Thank you to those who helped with the Garage Sale cleanup on Saturday May 4th. Many hands makes the work lighter. As always, we were fed a great lunch prior to helping others for a few hours. Many thanks to Mike for all of his hard work and efforts to make this happen both spring and fall. St Anthony of Padua Fraternity Bulletin Thank You Notes have been received from the FRANCISCAN FRIARS for our donation to their retirement fund and from MARY JO COPELAND whose card read: You Are A Blessing Thank you for your most generous donation to help God s poorest of the poor. Truly you add a bright shining star of love and hope to this this hurting world. Your Goodness will not be Forgotten Thank You May the peace of God always be with you and His light shine upon you forever, Sincerely, Mary Jo Copeland Doris and Mike pictured in March during our interview process. Report still forthcoming News From Browns Valley: Greetings! Our St. Anthony of Padua Fraternity met Sunday, May 5 after our 10:30 Mass. (There was a cold rain, but NO snow!) We were short a few members with Gloria, our Formation Director, in a Fargo hospital with her husband Jack who had a heart attack, Edith was attending a family celebration in Omaha, and Richard was home with the flu. We completed our Inquiry lessons in The Franciscan Journey and made plans for the Rite of Admission for Nancy and Richard which will be Sunday, June 9 after our 10:30 Mass. Anyone who would like to join us is certainly welcome! God's blessings and please keep Jack in prayer. 3 Volume 18 No 5 Page 3 May Column Diana Some of My Journey In the spring National Fraternity publication, Tau-USA, there was an article called Little Weeds/Didja Know? It was very interesting about many events and people through history that the way of Francis had a strong influence on. Each paragraph started with didja know and the article ended with didja know the story of our order isn t over yet? It would be interesting to be in the future and see what is written of how our new Pope Francis affects history with his Franciscan way of life even though he is a Jesuit. Yet, really, the Franciscans and the Jesuits are both Catholic. I have heard that Pope Francis has been named a pope for all Christians, which is really what we as Franciscan Catholics are also. We are Christians and we each will have a story to add to the story of the order. It will be a story of how we were a better Christian or follower of Jesus Christ, because of our involvement with being a third order secular Franciscan of St. Anthony of Padua fraternity. Our little personal story will be added to the wider view of Franciscan influence on Christian history. An important chapter of my personal life story that was influential on my Franciscan call just ended on Easter Sunday. My husband passed away after a long illness of five years and I received the call just as I came in from singing the last liturgy of the Easter Triduum. Most of you did not know about my marriage because it happened many years after my leave of absence from the order and just before my return. I did not talk about it because we both had been separated just before my return to the order by an avalanche of trauma in both our lives. We had both become unemployed, had family emergencies that required full time involvement (mine was two sick parents), numerous family responsibilities since we were also both grandparents, and we had begun to have marital difficulties from our lack of time to chat about how to fix problems that came up. It was too confusing to discuss because I didn t know how our story was going to turn out and if we were going to come back together or not. We had to sell all our belongings and give up a beautiful place we had renovated together. Unfortunately he became very ill after only a few months of our separation and came under his two daughters care. I continued to visit him and call daily as I tended to my parents care and finished school. Roy never was able to be well enough to communicate through the complexities of a relationship since some of his issues were brain damage from multiple brain surgeries. He had numerous medical issues and they were painful. After serious trauma in my life many years ago, I had left the Catholic church and the order of Francis to become Hmm not sure what. I did not believe in God anymore. Near the end of that long journey and when I had become a Christian again through a non-denominational church, I met Roy. He was not a Christian but he lived his life more Christian than anyone I had ever met. His Christian way of being changed my life and I decided to marry him after a six year chase. Roy didn t even know it but he was so Franciscan. We had a wonderful life together, before and after marriage, and before our tsunami of disasters hit us. He went to his church (fishing on a beautiful lake!) and I went to mine, though I joined him often on the beaches and in walks in woods as we are both nature freaks. We discussed everything honestly always. If we would have had a chance to talk, I think we would have worked it out because we both had a very simple agenda for our life together. He was a very good husband and beloved by many people he helped during his life. Roy s and my relationship had a major effect on my return to the Catholic Faith and eventually to the 3rd order of Francis again. Our relationship caused me to assimilate all the virtues Francis tried to teach us and to live out for us to model. Our relationship was reflective of Franciscan Christianity. About a half a year ago Roy gave his life to Christ but still did not go to a church, though he kept trying to get well enough to go fishing. He said Jesus is the greatest fisherman. Certainly our Lord has a place for Roy. I just wanted you all to know a little bit of one important chapter of my Franciscan story. Let us all be open to how God reveals himself in the story of our lives. Diana
4 Secular Franciscan Order St. Anthony of Padua Fraternity c/o Diana Arrell, OFS 4210 Colfax Avenue N. Minneapolis, MN Prayers for Pentcost We beseech you, O Lord, let the power of the Holy Spirit be always with us; let it mercifully purify our hearts, and safeguard us from all harm. Grant this through Christ our Lord, Amen. May the Comforter, Who proceeds from You, enlighten our minds, we beseech you, O Lord, and guide us, as Your Son has promised, into all truth. We ask this through Christ, our Lord, Amen. Pentecost prayers can help each of us listen to Christ s guidance through His Spirit! Holy Spirit, Sweet guest of My Soul, Abide In Me and Grant That I May Ever abide in Thee. Lord, by the light of the Holy Spirit You have taught the hearts of your faithful. In the same Spirit help us to relish what is right and always rejoice in His consolation. Through Christ, our Lord. Amen

I entrusted to them the message you entrusted to me and they received it. They have known that in truth I came from you, they have believed that it was you who sent me. For these I pray, not for the world. Bless and consecrate them, and I consecrate myself for their sakes. I do not pray for them alone; I pray also for those who will believe in me through their word that they may be holy by being one as we are. And I desire, Father, to have them in my company where I am to see this glory of mine in your kingdom. (Jesus as quoted in the Prologue to the Rule of the Secular Franciscan Order.)
