3 GOSPEL REFLECTION Do you rejoice in the good that others do? Those who show kindness and charity will be greatly rewarded. Jesus reprimands his disciples for their jealousy and suspicion. They were upset that someone who was not of their company was performing a good work in the name of Jesus. They even forbade the man because he was not following us. Jesus reply is filled with wisdom: No one who does a mighty work in my name will be able soon after to speak evil of me. Are we not like the disciples when we get upset at the good deeds of others who seem to shine more than us? Paul says that love is not jealous... but rejoices in the right (1 Corinthians 13:4,6). Love does not envy others. Envy and jealousy, its counterpart, are sinful because they lead us to sorrow over what should make us rejoice namely, our neighbor's good. The reason we may grieve over our another's good is that somehow we see that good as lessening our own value or excellence. Envy forms when we believe that the other person's advantage or possession diminishes or brings disgrace on us. Envy is contrary to love. Both the object of love and the object of envy is our neighbor's good; but they are contrary movements, since love rejoices in our neighbor's good, while envy grieves over it. The love of God frees us from envy and jealousy. How can we overcome envy? With the love that God has put into our hearts through the gift of the Holy Spirit (Romans 5:5). The Holy Spirit purifies our heart and frees us from our disordered passions, such as envy, jealously, greed, and bitterness. God's love is a generous and selfless love which is wholly oriented towards our good. The love that God places in our hearts seeks the highest good of our neighbor. God's love purifies and frees us from all envy and jealousy and it compels us to give generously, especially to those who lack what they need. Love gives freely and generously in kind deeds. Every one in need has a claim on us because they are dear to God who created them in his own image and likeness (Genesis 1:26-27). God created us in love for love. We are most free and happy when we love as he loves. The love and charitable help we show to our neighbor also expresses the gratitude we have for the abundant mercy and kindness of God towards us. Jesus declared that any kindness shown and any help given to those in need would not lose its reward. Jesus never refused to give to anyone in need who asked for his help. As his disciples, we are called to be kind and generous as he is. Are you grateful for God's mercy and kindness towards you and are you ready to show that same kindness and generosity towards your neighbor? Gregory of Nyssa, an early church father ( AD), comments on this passage: God never asks his servants to do what is impossible. The love and goodness of his Godhead is revealed as richly available. It is poured out like water upon all. God furnished to each person according to his will the ability to do something good. None of those seeking to be saved will be lacking in this ability, given by the one who said: 'whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because you bear the name of Christ, will by no means lose his reward (Mark 9:41). Ask the Lord Jesus to increase your generosity in doing good for others. Who in their right mind would want to lose their reward and then be deprived of joy in the end? We have been given the greatest of rewards God himself who is perfect love and source of abundant life and unending happiness. Paul the Apostle tells us that God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit (Romans 5:5). God's love purifies our hearts and compels us to express kindness and charity towards our neighbor who is created in the image and likeness of God. The charity we show to our neighbors in their need expresses the gratitude we have for the abundant goodness and kindness of God towards us. Jesus declared that any kindness shown and any help given to the people of Christ will not lose its reward. Jesus never refused to give to anyone in need who asked for his help. As his disciples we are called to be kind and generous as he is. Gregory of Nyssa ( AD), an early church father wrote: God never asks his servants to do what is impossible. The love and goodness of his Godhead is revealed as richly available. It is poured out like water upon all. God furnishes to each person according to his will the ability to do something good. None of those seeking to be saved will be lacking in this ability, given by the one who said: whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because you bear the name of Christ, will by no means lose his reward " (ON THE CHRISTIAN MODE OF LIFE 8.1) Avoiding evil and the near occasion of sin. Was Jesus exaggerating when he urged his followers to use drastic measures to avoid evil and its harmful consequences (Mark 9:42-47? Jesus set before his disciples the one supreme goal in life that is worth any sacrifice, and that goal is God himself and his will for our lives which leads to everlasting peace and happiness. Just as a doctor might remove a limb or some part of the body in order to preserve the life of the whole body, so we must be ready to part with anything that causes us to sin and which leads to spiritual death. Jesus warns his disciples of the terrible responsibility that they must set no stumbling block in the way of another, that is, not give offense or bad example that might lead another to sin. The Greek word for temptation (scandalon) is exactly the same as the English word scandal. The original meaning of scandal is a trap or a stumbling block which causes one to trip and fall. The Jews held that it was an unforgivable sin to teach another to sin. If we teach another to sin, he or she in turn may teach still another, until a train of sin is set in motion with no foreseeable end. The young in faith are especially vulnerable to the bad example of those who should be passing on the faith. Do you set a good example for others to follow, especially the young? "Lord Jesus, fill me with your Holy Spirit that I may radiate the joy of the Gospel to others. May your light and truth shine through me that others may find new life and joy in you, and freedom from sin and oppression."

It parks in front of abortion clinics and on college campuses, goes to community health fairs, and into underserved areas of the community, to provide pro-life healthcare services including free pregnancy testing, ultrasounds, STI testing and gynecological services. The goal is to help mothers and provide hope and support throughout Maricopa County. This mobile clinic and outreach team have saved hundreds of lives at the very last moment... Your support helps keep the Hope Mobile on the road and serving women, families, and the pre-born. Thank you! SVdP Quarterly Fifth Sunday Our SVDP Fifth Sunday collection is being taken up this weekend, September 29th & 30th. Our four SVdP Fifth Sunday collections are the primary source of funds for our conference. We appreciate your support and thank you for helping us be the face of Christ to others. Without your help, our hands would be empty. Your generosity makes a real difference. Just last month, we were able to help several families avoid eviction or keep the lights on. Because of your generosity, a family of nine has a place to live allowing the Dad to start a new job. You were the hands, feet and heart of Jesus to this and other families. Remember the Arizona Charitable Tax Credit allows you to contribute $400 for an individual or $800 for a couple and this contribution does not affect other credits. 7 OCTOBER IS RESPECT LIFE MONTH Each October is set aside by the bishops of the United States as Respect Life Month, a time to particularly reflect on life issues and to pray for and promote greater respect for all human life. Imagine yourself pausing in quiet wonder in front of a beautiful piece of art. Now think of the artist who created that masterpiece with painstaking care and precision, stepping back to admire his work. Each of us is a masterpiece, created by God with purpose and tenderness. We are each loved so intensely and are each of such great worth that we cannot even comprehend it. As Catholics, we want to be part of a society which has the affirmation and protection of human rights as its primary objective and boast. Yet many of those who are weak and vulnerable are pushed to the periphery by society. The Lord is inviting us to respond. We are called to act, not with anxiety or with doubt, but with confident trust in and dependence on God. We are called to care for ourselves and for others. We should each be prepared for those difficult situations when medical decisions must be made (2014 Respect Life Program, Advance Medical Directives: Planning for Your Future ). Are we aware of the various advance medical directives documents and the problematic issues that come with some of them? Do we know what the options are that are in keeping with Catholic teaching on the dignity of each person? We are each called to witness, in our own way, to the powerful and life-transforming love of Christ and to the respect and reverence that is due to each person as a masterpiece of God s creation. How is God calling us to witness to these truths in our daily lives? Rosary Sunday Prayer Intentions Prayer Intention boxes are located on tables in the narthex of both entrances for prayer intentions for Rosary Sunday. Stop by, write down your prayer intentions, and place them in the box. The intention boxes will be taken to the Diocesan Rosary Sunday celebration and will be a part of the prayer intentions for the day. Saint John XXIII The firstborn son of a farming family in Sotto il Monte, near Bergamo in northern Italy, Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli was always proud of his down-to-earth roots. In Bergamo s diocesan seminary, he joined the Secular Franciscan Order. After his ordination in 1904, Fr. Roncalli returned to Rome for canon law studies. He soon worked as his bishop s secretary, history teacher in the seminary, and as publisher of the diocesan paper. His service as a stretcher-bearer for the Italian army during World War I gave him a firsthand knowledge of war. In 1921, Fr. Roncalli was made national director in Italy of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith. He also found time to teach patristics at a seminary in the Eternal City. In 1925, he became a papal diplomat, serving first in Bulgaria, then in Turkey, and finally in France. During World War II, he became well acquainted with Orthodox leaders. With the help of Germany s ambassador to Turkey, Archbishop Roncalli helped save an estimated 24,000 Jewish people. Named a cardinal and appointed patriarch of Venice in 1953, he was finally a residential bishop. A month short of entering his 78th year, Cardinal Roncalli was elected pope, taking the name John after his father and the two patrons of Rome s cathedral, St. John Lateran. Pope John took his work very seriously but not himself. His wit soon became proverbial, and he began meeting with political and religious leaders from around the world. In 1962, he was deeply involved in efforts to resolve the Cuban missile crisis. His most famous encyclicals were Mother and Teacher (1961) and Peace on Earth (1963). Pope John XXIII enlarged the membership in the College of Cardinals and made it more international. At his address at the opening of the Second Vatican Council, he criticized the prophets of doom who in these modern times see nothing but prevarication and ruin. Pope John XXIII set a tone for the Council when he said, The has always opposed errors. Nowadays, however, the Spouse of Christ prefers to make use of the medicine of mercy rather than that of severity. On his deathbed, Pope John said: It is not that the gospel has changed; it is that we have begun to understand it better. Those who have lived as long as I have were enabled to compare different cultures and traditions, and know that the moment has come to discern the signs of the times, to seize the opportunity and to look far ahead. Good Pope John died on June 3, Saint John Paul II beatified him in 2000, and Pope Francis canonized him in excerpted from Franciscan Media

8 2018 Annual Report These are truly challenging times for our Parish, our school, and for our, as well as for our nation. Over the past year, St. Bernadette has experienced significant losses while at the same time, we have experienced growth and new beginnings. Through all of the ups and downs of the past year, our Parish has remained faithful to the Eucharist, united in prayer, generous to the elderly, needy, and vulnerable, welcoming to visitors or new members, and supportive of one another. We have stood together as a living sign of the love and faithfulness of God and the hope that His love gives us even in the face of tragedy and trials. Each June our Parish closes its fiscal year and begins working on an Annual Report that is then submitted to the Parish Finance Council, parishioners, and to the Diocese. I have no doubt that God has great things in store for St. Bernadette s. The prophet Jeremiah shares God s promise, For I know well the plans I have in mind for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare, not for woe! Plans to give you a future full of hope. (29:11) We can rest assured that those plans are perfectly designed to include our presence, our cooperation, our commitment, our faith, and our love. Below are a few of our highlights from last year, and as amazing as they are, the most amazing and important part of our Parish is you. The best gift we have is each of us, joined together to form a faith-filled community. Over the past year, we have: Welcomed more than180 new families Grown in holiness as our Parish school, religious education, and youth programs have flourished, particularly in Faith in Action activities and faith formation events, including XLTs, Deacon Harold, Fr. Leo, Vacation Bible School (VBS), Totus Tuus, the Diocesan Young Men s Conference and Leah Darrow Reached out to those in need through our Service Sundays and other Parish charitable projects Hosted record-breaking Lenten Evenings, with the support of all of our various Parish groups and organizations Reduced our overall operating expenses and worked to reduce our debt In May 2018, Notre Dame Federal Credit Union assisted us in refinancing the $3.4M debt on the new, allowing us to switch from a traditional 30 year mortgage to a 15-year line of credit, thus allowing us to pay off the debt in half the time. Because of our favorable cash flow, we were able to reduce the line of credit from $3.4M to $1.8M, as of today. LPi enabled us to offer on-line giving which includes over 200 families tithing an average amount of $111 per month, per family. Raised $26,000 at our Annual Parish Dinner Auction Fundraiser Continued to grow and to expand our volunteer base with new members and individuals who are supporting the liturgical life of the Parish and our many diverse programs and events The true test of our faith is not how we live and work in the best of times, but rather how we live out our faith in times of adversity. Over the past year, our community has been challenged but we have remained committed to one another, to God, and to His holy. We are truly a people of fidelity and hope. As we look to the future, we must remember those who have gone before us sacrificing so to pass the faith onto us. Now it is time for us to take what we have been given, to safeguard it, and to hand it on to future generations. Thank you for your ongoing support and fidelity. Please join me as we move into a new year filled with new challenges and possibilities, but most of all one filled with the hope we have in Our Lord and the plans He has for us. In Christ, Deacon Al Homiski
