And soon we will have our own Angel Tree to benefit the Women's Center in Melbourne. Don t miss the Christmas fun set for our next gathering on Thursday December 14. Please Come! Karen Neumann; WF President CHRISTMAS FOR DEVEREUX Patty Hurst, administrator for Devereux, has asked if our Women s Fellowship can help their young men. Mick Hanson, is a member here at our church and works with these young men. They are asking for $10 $20 gift cards from Target or Walmart for Christmas. There are 24 young men, ages there. We will be collecting in Sponsler Hall. Please help. Thank you! Devereux of Florida offers a professional therapeutic environment for children and adolescents facing significant emotional, behavioral and intellectual/ developmental challenges. ANGEL TREE AND STUFF A STOCKING You can make a difference in the life of a local child this holiday season. Every year we fill stockings for children in our community who are in need of some Christmas Cheer! Women's Fellowship is helping the Salvation Army in their "Stuff A Stocking" campaign. So far this year over 600 families have requested help. Many of these families have 2 or 3 children, so many stockings are needed. We need stockings for boys and girls ages infant to 12- years-old. The stockings come with a list of gift suggestions for each age group and gender, and you can add whatever you like. The stockings will be distributed by the Salvation Army to families throughout Brevard County. Pick up an empty stocking in Sponsler Hall during Fellowship Hour. Please return the stocking to the church by Sunday, December 10. We are also helping the Salvation Army with their Angel Tree at the Merritt Square Mall. We will staff a signup table at the mall from 10:00a.m. to 8:00 p.m. (Date TBA soon) If you can donate two hours of your time you can help to make sure that underprivileged families in Brevard County have a wonderful Christmas!

We all know that the answer to that question is to do justice, love kindness and walk humbly with God. It is important to note that answer follows the word but. In other words, all that God requires of us is to do justice. Doing justice, seeking peace and building community are central to the identity of the United Church of Christ. Understanding our call to do justice, love mercy and walk humbly with God requires continual work and self-reflection. Every local church can do something to end violence. Together we can be a strong voice for change, a powerful network of prayer for peace, a strong example of doing justice in our world today Bernice Powell Jackson Former UCC Executive Minister, Justice and Witness Ministries

6 ABOUT TODAY S SERVICE Some of the liturgy today uses elements found in the churches of seventeenth and eighteenthcentury Plymouth and Boston, Massachusetts. Some of the wording incorporates components of more contemporary liturgy; this background information is being given as an educational reference. In the earlier days the call to church echoed through the colony with the sound of the conch shell or drum. The body of worshipers commonly processed to the church because of the need for safety and protection. Since the meetinghouse had no heat, the congregation brought foot stoves to the services. Women carried hot stones in their muffs; ministers preached in overcoats and frequently wore mittens. Elders and deacons occupied pews beside the pulpit. The congregation stood in place when the minister entered the meetinghouse. The beadle, a parish official occasionally took care of numerous minor parish duties. For the worship service, the beadle lifted the Bible from its protective box and preceding the minister, placed it on the pulpit. The congregation sat down following the ministers seating. The congregation stood as the service opened with prayer, which lasted at least fifteen minutes. By the early eighteenth century, a form of invocation more familiar to our contemporary style had come into use. The early Congregationalist sang the metrical version of the Psalms. They used The Bay Psalm Book, a hymnbook that was, in face, the first book published in America in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in For congregational singing, a deacon or precentor gave the key using a pitch pipe or tuning fork and lined out the Psalm, singing a line to the congregation, the congregation then repeating the line as sung. Choirs came into use only at the time of the Revolution. They sat in a balcony in the rear of the meetinghouse to avoid all pretension to pride. However, the congregation frequently rose and faced the choir so that they might both hear or join in the singing. As for musical instruments, the early Congregationalists believed the instruments only furthered the work of the Devil. Around 1700 the church bass a cello-like stringed instrument and the bass viola came into use. In 1713 the first organ was installed in a Boston meetinghouse amid much vociferous and raucous resistant. The first public notice officially summoning the inhabitants of Massachusetts to an observance of Thanksgiving was issued in 1676 and in 1789 George Washington issued the first national Thanksgiving proclamation. As a mark of respect for scripture the congregation stood while the minister gave out the text for the day s sermon and in the Reformed tradition the reading was preceded by a brief Prayer of Illumination. The early clergy called the public reading of scripture without comment, dumb reading and the major portion of the service was devoted to the sermon. With their emphasis on education and learning, the early Congregationalists regarding the sermon as the high point of worship. Cont. next page top

7 The minister laid an hourglass on the pulpit and turned it over as each hour closed. Sermons frequently lasted two and three hours. A so-call tything man kept congregants awake by using a long pole tipped with a brass knocker at one end to rap the sleeping males and tipped the other end with a rabbit s foot or a feather for the more gentle persuasion of the sleeping females. After the sermon was the time for the prayer and offering. Here is where the minister prayed the long prayer, a term used until some seventy-five years ago. This is said to be the place in the service where the congregation possessed freest access to God. Congregationalist emphasized free prayer of the minister s own composition, rather than prayers made official in a liturgical prayer book. The offering also followed the sermon. A deacon rose from a place behind the communion table and said, Brothers and sisters of this congregation, now there is time left for contribution; wherefore as God hath prospered you, so freely offer. The head of the family then walked forward and placed the offering of goods or money on the communion table. In the colonial churches the minister was the first to leave and the last to enter. The men left first in order to guarantee protection for the women and children.
