5 St. Ignatius of Antioch Church Page 5 Justice Corner By Carolyn Krantz...Pastoral Associate The next several columns will be devoted to The Ten Essentials of Parish Life, a document that was issued under Bishop Cummins in The review of these principals is an effort to examine our life as a parish at the beginning of a new year, a year that will bring changes to our deanery and to our sister church, Holy Rosary. A study of these ideas will bring us to a better understanding of who we are and what our place is in the Diocese of Oakland. The first principal is Spirituality. A living spirituality signifies a living faith, even as it witnesses to the presence of Jesus Christ in our midst. Such a spirituality is nourished by the Scriptures and the Sacraments and in turn manifests itself in prayer and service. A parish must assist the spiritual growth of its members. This happens by good, thoughtful preaching and prayerful ritual, encouragement of an active prayer life, adult education opportunities/workshops, moving people toward active service to the poor and being sensitive to distinct religious devotions and practices of various cultural and religious organizations. Our parish demonstrates a commitment to these strategies to help people grow in faith. Some examples of this commitment are: Well prepared liturgies with appropriate moments of silence Prayerfully prepared homilies Appropriate and creative musical offerings Well trained and reverent liturgical ministers Clear direction and assistance with significant moments in life such as Baptisms, First Communions, funerals and weddings Opportunities for repentance and forgiveness (Confession) Workshops such as GIFT and other adult education offerings, and yearly retreats Promotion of various ways to help the poor through St. Vincent de Paul, Mobile Mall, Gubbio Sock Drive, Stand Down on the Delta, preparing meals in the shelters, the refugee project, etc. Sensitivity to various cultural groups in the parish through support of Our Lady of Fatima Group, Simbang Gabi, Divine Mercy, Guadalupe celebrations, etc. This is not meant to be an exhaustive list. There are many ways that the staff organizes events to call individuals and families to develop closer relationships with the Lord. But, it is up to the individual members to set aside time to be in silence with the Lord. Commitment to spiritual growth is not just something the staff does, but something each individual member and family group must be responsible for. Some ways to be a person of prayer are: Set aside a specific time for silence and reflection every day Come to Mass regularly Spend time before meals to say grace and give thanks for the gifts of the day. Commit to prayerful and less material practices when there are big celebrations Be a person of service. Commit to some of the many activities sponsored by the parish There is no prayer life without a commitment to serving others. The scriptural basis for this is in the Gospel of the Last Supper. Every Holy Thursday we wash each other s feet to symbolize the connection between prayer, Eucharist and service. Many of us practice service in our own homes in doing what needs to be done to make the lives of those around us easier and filled with love as well as doing outreach to the poor through the many ways of service that we offer. I would say that we are a parish where spiritual growth is very important, but spiritual growth is never finished. Examine your own life this week to see how you are committed to growing spiritually. Parish Perspective By Peter Degl Innocenti...Pastoral Associate We Are All Called to Be Saints Welcome to the first Sunday of the new calendar year. This is the time where everyone is supposed to relax from the fast pace of the holidays. It is also the time when the very same people plan to do the things they said they d get to, after the holidays. So, guess what? It s still busier than usual! At least for those of us who celebrated the Filipino tradition of Simbang Gabi can be busy at a decent hour of the day. We were very fortunate to hold our own nine-day novena here at St. Ignatius of Antioch church. Fr. Ricky Pacoma was here from the Philippines to celebrate his parent s 50 th wedding anniversary and celebrated all of the 5:00 am Masses. He even had certificates of completion for all who attended without missing a day. It was heartwarming to see a large number of Simbang Gabi attendees staying to attend the regular 8:00 am services. I introduced a communion service with Welcome all you who are continuing from Simbang Gabi, and to those who just arrived; welcome to Simbang Communion! After nine days of getting up at 3:15 am to open and set things up, I was getting a little Punchy. As I glanced at the new Catholic calendar, I noticed that this Saturday the 6 th was the first day for honoring St. Andre Bessette. That brought a smile to my face. Most people know little about the recently canonized saint. He was a sincere and devote man living in Canada whose sole desire was to become a priest. He didn t have the education they were looking for and his poor health was a liability. He was accepted into the College of Norte Dame in Montreal as a brother and was installed as the doorkeeper, message boy, and laundryman. When people came to have a priest pray for curing their ills and none were available, Bro. Andre would pray to his patron saint, Saint Joseph. For those who had Bro. Andre pray for them, miraculous healings were taking place. Before long thousands were coming to the humble doorkeeper. After his passing in 1935 it wasn t long till the miracles continued for those who prayed for Andre s help and intersession. He was beatified and became known as Blessed Brother Andre. Finally, the inevitable day came when he was canonized as a saint. It was a vindication of spirit and faith over rules and regulations. It was the canonization of not only Bro. Andre, but for all of those who seek to serve the Church and have found opposition from the Church itself. Those who said No to Bro. Andre are forgotten. The humble old man who kept the door for 40 years will be remembered as a saint. Celebrate your own involvement in the Church with a prayer of thanks to St. Joseph for listening to the humble servant we now call Saint Andre Bessette.

6 St. Ignatius of Antioch Church Page 6 Now that 2017 has drawn to a close, St. Ignatius of Antioch parish is taking time to reflect upon what we ve accomplished last year and all that we have to look forward to in Undoubtedly, we are a parish blessed with the love, prayers, and support of so many generous individuals. Without the kindness and generosity of our parishioners, so much of what we accomplish in ministry and outreach would not be possible. As you count your blessings this new year, we ask that you prayerfully consider a special year-end gift to St. Ignatius of Antioch. Please know that every gift, no matter the amount, is both celebrated and appreciated!
