5 St. Ignatius of Antioch Church Page 5 Justice Corner By Carolyn Krantz...Pastoral Associate The sixth Essential for Parish Life is existence of Small Christian Communities within the parish. SCC s are gatherings of Christians who come together regularly to pray, sing, share human stories, read scripture and seek ways to respond to God s presence in their lives and in the world. These are members who know one another personally and support one another through the trials of life. In 1999, Pope John Paul II said, In such a human context, it will be easier to gather to hear the word of God, reflect on the range of human problems in the light of this Word, and gradually to make responsible decisions inspired by the all-embracing love of Christ. (Ecclesia in America) A small Christian Community is a sample of the parish as a whole. As a parish, we continue to offer the opportunity for such gatherings in Family Faith Formation, R.C.I.A, G.I.F.T, Grains of Wheat, the Fatima Group, and other opportunities, but this does not meet the need for the 615 registered families in the parish. Many different kinds of groups may function as an SCC. Each group is focused on bringing the Gospel values to life in our modern world. They may be connected to a project, but the focus is on learning and growing together through scripture, prayer and sharing. Members must have a commitment to sharing with one another and seeing where the Spirit is at work in our local area and activities. Many religious groups such as the Franciscans, the Jesuits, and various orders of religious women have started Companion and third order groups with the same purpose. These groups are based on the belief that Christians are not meant to tackle the problems of this world alone, but need each other for discernment and reflection to find what God is saying to us and to read the signs of the times. It is hard for the people of this parish to make time for such regular monthly meetings because of work and family responsibilities, driving distances, etc. Night meetings are often not possible because of the commute and day meetings exclude those who work. Often some short term solutions help such as workshops, short retreats, etc. But still the need remains. So, I will end this segment with a question. What will work for you? If you can begin a neighborhood group in your home, staff can come to help you with the beginning of a Small Christian Community. If you can gather 5-6 people that are interested in an SCC, we can provide materials and leadership. It has to be something that works for you. Leave a message in my box if you would like to get started or talk to one of the staff if you have questions. The more groups we have, the more the Sunday experience comes alive. An unreflective life is a tragedy. SCC s are a way to grow closer together as a parish, understand what God is asking of us, and appreciate the gifts God has given us. Parish Perspective By Peter Degl Innocenti...Pastoral Associate Sensibility and Ability When it was announced at a Parish Staff meeting that the Bishop s Feb. 1 st Spring Formation Day would focus on mental health, I had a flood of mixed feelings about it. Was it to be an examination of our own mental health status, the clergy in general, the community at large, or something entirely different? Curiosity, trepidation, excitement, and a boldness of heart lead me and the staff to plunge into the meeting held at St. Stephen s Church in Walnut Creek. As we entered the hall most of the tables were fully occupied except for one, way up in the front, where a single folder of hand-out materials lay. Maryann, Estrella, and I seized our chance to sit together while Fr. Robert decided to hang-out in back with his fellow priests. We found out why our table was treated like a leper colony when it was too late to move. The lone folder belonged to the bishop and that is where he would be sitting. Before the meeting started, I took the opportunity to write the first draft about our recently held crab feed for this column. The bishop sat down as I had two minutes of writing left to finish the article. I closed the book and wished him a good morning. The meeting focused on the works of Catholic Charities of the East Bay and NAMI, the National Alliance of Mental Illness. Testimonials were given by people recovering from severe mental illness (SMI). A wealth of resources, referrals, and basic courses of action were addressed. The single most important thing to remember is to treat people with mental illness as People! Now, on Feb. 2 nd the very next day, those who attended the 8 am Liturgy sponsored by the Fatima Prayer Group were treated to the loveable yet somewhat zany witticism of Fr. Ricardo Chavez. I refrain from the use of the word crazy, yet I ve always said, (like ESP) We re all crazy to some degree, just some of us have it to a greater ability then others! I have a lot of ability. That Saturday was the feast day of St. Blaze, Bishop and Martyr. Fr. Ricardo recalled how St. Blaze had one day saved a man s life from choking to death by dislodging a fish bone from his throat. Since then St. Blaze has been the patron saint of every condition of the throat and mouth. Fr. Chavez assured us of receiving the special blessing invoking the name of St. Blaze at the end of Mass. And if I start to walk out without giving you the blessing, do something that will remind me of it. He paused then added I don t know throw a fish at me, I guess. The Mass went smoothly and, sharp-as-a-tack Fr. Ricardo hit on all three points of the day; the scriptures, St. Blaze, and St. Fatima. At the conclusion of the Mass Fr. took one step toward the door, stopped, and in sotto voce said, I don t want a fish across the face, do I. Reverently, he gave the blessing to everyone and proclaimed for all to hear, Now you can say your one thousand or two thousand Hail Mary s with the help of St. Blaze to save your throats from getting sore! I like that man s ability.

Our Experience Hope Training Institute teaches basic restorative and traumaresponsive philosophies and practices. Many people with mental health struggles find solace in their faith. But church members or staff may not know how to respond to their struggles or help in a crisis. This training offers tools and answers to questions like, What do I do? or Where can someone find help? The course is appropriate for anyone who wants to learn how to help someone who may be experiencing a mental health-related crisis or problem. Participants can use the skills learned in their daily lives, including within their own families, churches, or neighborhoods. For more information, contact Cat Willett at cwillett@cceb.org or call Grains of Wheat This women s group, held on the first Wednesday of the month, is inviting all women of the parish who desire to grow spiritually and mature in the Lord to attend. The meetings will be March 7 and April 4th from 9:15-11:00 in the Parish Hall. Prayer and scripture according to the liturgical season as well as shared meditations will be offered. Regular prayer life and commitment to attend all three meetings is required. This is a special opportunity to grow together as women of faith of St. Ignatius of Antioch Parish. Father McGivney Wants YOU! Knights of Columbus Membership Drive In 1882 Father Michael McGivney established the Knights of Columbus, a Catholic fraternal organization.
