Vicente Dominican Hall); 1313 A Street, Antioch. Doors open at 5:30 pm with a light dinner at 6:00 pm and Bunco at 7:00 pm. The cost is $20 per person and No experience is required! Save the date. 40th Anniversary Mass of Celebration and festive dinner dance - Saturday June 1, Safe Parking Program Opens On January 1, Winter Nights opened their Parking Lot Program in Pittsburg. Persons living in cars can safely sleep overnight at a site monitored by Winter Nights staff. Participants will have access to restrooms, breakfast snacks and will be able to utilize the daytime Oasis in Pittsburg for showers where Winter Nights staff will assist them with obtaining additional services. If you know of a family living in their car, please refer them to Bill Shaw, Winter Nights Program Manager, at This program is in addition to the ongoing Emergency Rotating Family Shelter Program hosted by Contra Costa faith communities. Contra Costa Interfaith Housing (CCIH) Homework Club Support: Several volunteers recently retired from their dedicated service to this program. The need is especially great at our Pittsburg site. We also have other Homework Club sites in Bay Point, Concord and Pleasant Hill. We are looking for compassionate individuals to help in our ongoing after school Homework Club that runs through June. Other sites we serve are in Concord, Pleasant Hill and Bay Point. Volunteers provide academic and mentoring support to children from extremely low-income homes in grades K-12. Commitment is one afternoon per week (Monday- Thursday) for the school year. Adults and high school sophomores through seniors are encouraged to apply at Ruby Slippers 2019: CCIH s annual auction gala Ruby Slippers - There s No Place Like Home is February 9, This is the major fundraising event for CCIH each year. 5 St. Ignatius of Antioch Church Page 5 Justice Corner By Carolyn Krantz...Pastoral Associate A recent article by Sr. Joan Chittester in the National Catholic Reporter got me thinking about what we can do to make the world a better place. She speaks to the growing sense of uncertainty in the American soul Every day we find ourselves in a new political quandary that threatens us, unsettles us, divides us rather than unifies us. I found myself checking out what threatens, unsettles and divides in my own life. How does one maintain stability and hope in this current age? Step One is to not be driven by fear. There are plenty of causes for fear: fear we cannot pay the bills, fear for our children s safety in a violent world, fear of being cheated by the takers in this world, fear of the destruction of nature, fear of people who don t look like me, etc. The question is do we want to be driven by paranoia or by the grace of trusting in God s inevitable partnership with us. My peace I give to you, Jesus said. The only way to this peace is through prayer and Christian Community. We need to spend time sorting out our emotions in the light of the Gospel ( Step Two) and we need to have friends or community groups where we can share our struggles. (Step Three) Bravado and bullying are not the answer to fear. Critical thinking and spiritual guidance about our choices would be a better way to go. Have lunch with a faithful friend with whom you can share your worries and think about options for action. There is nothing like a trust-worthy friend to help one through life s hard choices. Find an organization in line with the change that you want to bring about in the world. There are plenty of them and volunteers are always welcome. The hard part is to discern what tugs on your heart strings. That is the place you are being called to help. None of us can take on all the problems of the world. They are too big for us. But, we care called to make a difference. Choose one area of change and put your energies there. Ask others to partner with you in the work. We are the strongest when we work together. Gandhi said, You must be the change you wish to see in the world. As a parish we are working to set an example with good liturgies that prayerfully nurture our souls and charitable works that make a difference in East County. We strive to touch the hearts of the needy, the sick and the discouraged. We watch our words that they may not be driven by anger or vengeance. That is what it means to be a Christian. My peace I give to you. Do you feel it? Can you be peaceful in the midst of stress and turmoil? Can you give your fears and worries to the Lord and not take them back? Can you bring peace to others who are struggling? This is the spiritual work of our time. It sets us apart from the current milieu. It doesn t come in Texts or Tweets. Our words and actions are the product of an internal life in which God works with us, listens to us and directs us to be His hands and feet. His Word is always a surprise. It comes in unexpected ways. We find Him in the foreigner, in the homeless, in those struggling in our families. We look for Him by being present to each moment of the day and rejoicing that we know Him by the love we give and receive. In this Love there is peace that surpasses all understanding. Parish Perspective By Peter Degl Innocenti...Pastoral Associate Feasting on Crab The day of our annual Knights of Columbus Crab Feed rolled around, and I found myself with an extra ticket for that night s feast. I made several calls to people I thought would greatly appreciate the ticket. Some had other commitments, one had an allergy to crab, and the rest were voic accounts. I decided to give my neighbor across the street, Greg, a try. Greg has attended many of our parish functions and especially delights in Don Pearson s organ concerts. Greg accepted the offer and began to thank me profusely. Later that day Greg offered to drive to the church as a small but humble recompense for the valued ticket. The dinner was set in the mold of success established many years ago and ran the gamut of clam chowder and shrimp cocktail appetizers, salmon mousse served with a variety of savory crackers, strong garlic bread, crisp green salad, penne pasta in a thick tangy tomato sauce and linguine with clams served in a richly infused garlic olive oil dressing, delicately chilled cracked crab, and refreshing ice-cream for dessert. The crab, as always, was moist with clean clear flavors of the highest order coming through with every bite. It was delicious and bountiful! The crab kept coming until there was no more time left in the evening to eat it. The door prizes and raffle prizes were swiftly called and claimed by their respective ticket holders. It was soon time to leave. Greg and I began our waddle out to the car while nursing our aching over-stuffed bellies along the way. A thought flashed through my mind and I let out a half chuckle. Greg inquired as to what was so funny. I told him, You were thanking me so much for the invite and ticket, now with our stomachs in pain, you re probably cursing me. We both started to laugh but quickly silenced ourselves lest the pain be amplified to the point of vocalization. It is good to feast every now and again, just as it is good to fast also. The cool night air cleared our heads and a warmth of heart was felt as the knowledge that we contributed to the needed fund-raising of the parish dawned upon us. Getting home and sleep were the two main priorities that occupied my mind then. Sleep was most likely on most of the minds of the people filing out to their cars. It was a good time to reflect on the bounty the Lord has bestowed on us, in food, in friendship, in communion with fellow Catholics, and in his providence for the future. Thank you, God. Thank you, Knights of Columbus for bringing God s bounty to us in such a special way.

As part of our year-long celebration of the Anniversary of St. Ignatius of Antioch Church, we want to celebrate and remember all who received the Sacrament of Matrimony in our parish over the past 40 years. This celebration will take place on the weekend of February 9 & 10 and culminate with receptions for the entire parish in the parish hall after the Sunday 8:00 & 10:00 am Liturgies. The Anniversary Committee is collecting wedding pictures for our Celebration of Marriages. If you have pictures of your marriage at St. Ignatius of Antioch that you would like to share, place them in the 40th Anniversary Memory Box located in the Narthex. Please include the names of the newlyweds and the date of marriage. If you would like your pictures returned, place them in an envelope with your name and phone number.
