2 My Dear People, Today s theme on the readings: PEOPLE OF THE COVENANT If there is one word that stands out in today s readings, it is covenant. God s faithfulness and goodness serve as examples to us of how to live. Genesis tells the story of Noah and of God s covenant not only with all people, but with all of nature. Never will the cleansing waters of the flood bring their destructive power to all the earth again. The sign, the reminder to both God and nature, is the rainbow in the heavens. The psalm reminds us of this compassion of God, and begs God to remember us, not because of our goodness, but because of God s goodness and fidelity to the promise. A form of bodily prayer, fasting and abstinence in union with other Christians reminds us of our utter dependence on and love for God. A gesture of repentance, fasting is symbolic of a change of heart as we turn away from sin to live in fidelity to the Gospel. Lenten Regulations: Fasting: Ages fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, limiting themselves to one full meal and two smaller meals each day, with no snacking between meals. Abstinence: Catholics age 14 and older abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all the Fridays of Lent. THOMAS MORE MEN A retreat for St. Thomas More men will be held at the Passionist Retreat Center in Sierra Madre on the weekend of February 23 th - February 25 th. Well, Lent has begun and as I promised last week I have here today a few books that I think you may enjoy and find helpful as you journey with the Lord toward His Passion and Resurrection. Lent is definitely a time of special grace given by God to help us prepare for the glory of Easter morning. So, take a couple of minutes to consider the titles below or stop by the library to browse through our collection of nearly 3000 titles. The Lord may have something waiting there just for you. Aunt Edith: The Jewish Heritage of a Catholic Saint, written by her niece, Susanne Batzdorff. An intimate look into the life of Edith Stein. The Journey Toward God, by Fr. Benedict J. Groeschel, CFR. Offers selections from Catholic, Protestant, and Orthodox writers who have mastered the spiritual life. Saint Maker: The Remarkable Life of Francis de Sales, Shepherd of Kings, Commoners, Sinners and Saints, by Michael De La Bedoyere. The story of the courageous life of this great Catholic Saint. February 14 March 25 This Lent you are invited to participate in the 40 Days for Life campaign. In addition to 40 days of peaceful prayer and fasting for an end to abortion, you may pray outside the local Planned Parenthood location: 700 S. Tustin, Orange :00 am to 6:00 pm. 6 FLU SEASON ETIQUETTE With the arrival of the cold and flu season, we thought we would provide some helpful guidelines for your participation in the Liturgy. If you are sick, consider staying home. Please remember that it is not a sin to miss Mass because you are sick. If you are attending Mass, please be understanding if your neighbor is choosing not to shake hands. A simple gesture like a smile or bow of the head would be appropriate to demonstrate the mutual charity celebrated at that time during Mass. During this season, please strongly consider receiving the Eucharist in the hand only. Receiving the Eucharist under both species is up to the individual. It is important to remember, however, that Christ is truly and completely present under each of the sacramental signs of either bread or wine. Therefore, if you are ill, please consider refraining from the cup during this flu season.

8 Your IRA Can Make an Impact at St. Thomas More Are you 70 ½ or older and receiving IRA distributions? You can make a gift to the Believe and Grow Together capital campaign and reduce your Taxable Income. Taking Required Minimum Distributions: The deadline for taking RMDs is December 31 each year. If you have an IRA, you may delay taking your first RMD (and only your first) until April 1 of the year after you turn 70½. If you choose to delay your first RMD, you'll have to take your first and second RMD in the same tax year. To understand how delaying your first RMD impacts your taxes, please consult your tax advisor. How RMDs are taxed: The IRS taxes RMDs as ordinary income. Withdrawals will count toward your total taxable income for the year. They will be taxed at your applicable individual federal income tax rate and may also be subject to state and local taxes. If you'd like to reduce the effect of RMDs on your taxes, consider making a qualified charitable distribution (QCD) to Saint Thomas More as your designated eligible charitable organization. A QCD excludes the amount you donate from taxable income and can be counted toward satisfying your RMD for the year, as long as certain rules are met. Roth IRA holders are not subject to RMD. A tax advisor can help you determine when to take RMDs and if a QCD is appropriate for your situation. 9 LENTEN SPIRITUALITY SERIES OC Catholic Brunch 30s and 40s Sunday, March 4th Our group brings together single and married Catholics in their 30s and 40s for fellowship. After the 9:30am Mass, we will meet near the altar. We ll then drive to Stacks Pancake House (14421 Culver Dr., Irvine) for brunch at 11am. For questions or future events, find us on Facebook, Meetup or contact St. Cecilia Church in Tustin will be having Rabbi Michael Mayersohn to share his gifted insight on Jewish and Christian teachings. During the month of February and March, he will share the concept of sin looking at its beginning in Jewish history and how it also influenced Christianity. Rabbi Michael is a known teacher within the Jewish community, as well as renowned speaker and author. He was ordained at Hebrew Union College and is a Reform Rabbi. After 30 years, he has developed a vast knowledge and understanding of Judaism and enjoys sharing it whenever possible. He has spoken at our Religious Education Congress many times and has been well received. Monday, February 26, with Mondays, March 5, 12, and. 19 to follow. Each session will be from 7pm8pm with a question and answer session following. St. Cecilia's is located at 1301 Sycamore Ave. in Tustin.
