3 My Dear People, Today s theme on the Readings: GOD FORGIVES The Lord said to Joshua, Today I have removed the reproach of Egypt from you. After forty years of wandering in the desert, this hard-headed people have finally reached the Promised Land. No more do they eat the manna in the desert, but they partake of the fruits of their new homeland. God has kept the promise to their parents in Egypt. Even though they were a sinful people, many times questioning God and even worshiping false gods, God has forgiven them and fulfilled the promise. The take-away for us is that there is no sin that is unforgivable. We may have offended our neighbors, given a bad example to someone, even worshiped the false gods of money and power. But God is a merciful God, true to the words spoken to us. God forgives all and calls us back to love. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. A form of bodily prayer, fasting and abstinence in union with other Christians reminds us of our utter dependence on and love for God. A gesture of repentance, fasting is symbolic of a change of heart as we turn away from sin to live in fidelity to the Gospel. Lenten Regulations: Fasting: Ages fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, limiting themselves to one full meal and two smaller meals each day, with no snacking between meals. Abstinence: Catholics age 14 and older abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all the Fridays of Lent. 5 Congratulations Deacon Tony Patronite & Bernie Ocampo! Last Sunday, March 24th, both Deacon Tony and Bernie were recognized at the Catholic Man of the Year dinner at the Anaheim Marriott Hotel, sponsored by St. Joseph Evangelization Network. Deacon Tony was the 2019 nominee from STM based on his countless hours he devotes to Christ Renews His Parish, Baptism, Vigils, Graveside Services, Bible Studies, St. Vincent de Paul, Knights of Columbus, Adoration and assisting at weekday Mass. Bernie was the 2019 nominee from Cursillo. He has been a very involved Parishioner here at STM, including St. Vincent de Paul. Both of these men contribute outstanding service to the Church and community in the humble, quiet spirit of Saint Joseph. When you see them around, please be sure to offer your congratulations and appreciation! TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Today, Laetare Sunday, breaks the somberness of Lent for a little rejoicing, and the readings all summon us to an awareness of reconciliation. One of the best-loved stories of our tradition is today s Gospel story of the runaway son and the prodigal father. Prodigal, of course, is an adjective meaning spendthrift or extravagant to a degree bordering on recklessness, and although the boy maxes out the credit cards, it is really the father who is prodigal with forgiveness. Part of the excitement of this Laetare Sunday is rooted in the ancient catechumenate. Long ago, midway through Lent, the elect were focusing more and more on the gift of reconciliation accomplished for them by Christ and about to be realized in the Easter sacraments they were preparing to celebrate. In some places, the elect were even bedecked with roses on this day. A person bedecked with roses sticks out in a crowd; a person formed by the Eucharist and committed to living a life of reconciliation does, too. That s you! James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Anonymous Divine Mercy Novena Join us for 20 minutes of prayer to prepare for the celebration of Divine Mercy Sunday! Good Friday and Holy Saturday, April 19th & 20th 8:20am: We will meet in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel, following morning prayers. Easter Sunday, April 21st 1:00pm in the Church, following the last morning Mass Monday, April 22nd through Saturday, April 27th 9:00am in the Church, following morning Mass Divine Mercy Sunday, April 28th Join us to pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet following every Mass. We will meet inside the church to recite the Chaplet. At the end of the 11:15am Mass, the Chaplet will be sung. All are welcome!

If you are sick, please stay home. Please remember that it is not a sin to miss Mass because you are sick. If you are attending Mass, please be understanding if your neighbor is choosing not to shake hands. A simple gesture like a smile or bow of the head would be appropriate to demonstrate the mutual charity celebrated at that time during Mass. During this season, please strongly consider receiving the Eucharist in the hand only. Receiving the Eucharist under both species is up to the individual. It is important to remember, however, that Christ is truly and completely present under each of the sacramental signs of either bread or wine. Therefore, if you are ill, please consider refraining from the cup during this flu season.
