2 7th Sunday in Ordinary Time February 19, 2017 Fr. Mark s Remarks Several people have commented recently that they see people before Mass, during Mass, and after Mass reading from pocket-sized booklets or even reading something on their iphones. What are they reading before, during, and after Mass? My guess is they are using one of two relatively new personal prayer periodicals. One is called Magnificat and the other is called Give Us This Day. Both are a practical approach to daily prayer by providing prayers and readings for daily Mass, daily Morning Prayer, Evening Prayer, and Night Prayer as well as Sundays and Holy Days. They include a reflection on the Scriptures for each day as well as meditations on the lives of the saints of today and yesterday. There are also contemporary spiritual insights from writers on daily living of the Catholic faith. You can use them at home, in church, or wherever you find yourself. The Magnificat booklet has an edition called Magnifikid for children and has a special offer for young adults under 25 years old. Both are offered in print and have digital editions. So people are not reading their s on their iphone at Mass, they are praying!!! They also come in large print editions. Both are published monthly and you can subscribe for different amounts of time. Just put the titles in your search engine and the information on subscribing will come up online. We also have the St. Joseph Sunday Missal 2017 available in each church office. This popular and economical annual missal has the complete Mass prayers and readings for all Sundays and Holydays from the beginning of Advent to the Feast of Christ the King (the full annual liturgical year). It also contains devotional prayers and commentary of the readings and liturgical seasons that will enhance your pray time at Mass. You can read the Sunday readings at home before coming to Mass and hear them in a new way as they are being proclaimed. These have been particularly helpful for our international students at MSU and those who are not Catholic or becoming Catholic. They are a fraction of the price of the monthly periodicals. Put your name on the inside cover and we will call you if you accidently leave it in church or you can come and pick it up in the office at either church. 2 I recommend these three spiritual guides that help develop your prayer life for liturgical and personal prayer. They make nice gift subscriptions too. On Wednesday, February 22, we will have a special guest from Sacred Heart Seminary, Dr. Victor Salas, PhD. He will be at St. John at 7:00pm to speak about Science and the Soul: Exploring Faith and Reason. Have a blessed week! Join us this Sunday for Coffee & Donuts after the 9 & 11am Masses at St. Thomas Aquinas. Lenten Book Sale Our annual Lenten Book Sale takes place next weekend, February 25-26, after all Masses at both sites. Ash Wednesday is March 1!... and so we invite you to take some time to look for a possible book or two for spiritual reading and reflection during the upcoming season of Lent. The traditional little black Lenten books from the Diocese of Saginaw will also be available, as well as other free Lenten resources... so please stop by! Preparing for Lent Centering Prayer and Lectio Divina Explore the prayer traditions of the early desert fathers and how they can lead us to a closer relationship with God, both in our individual prayer life and through shared practice. These past seven years have been the most significant of my life and I have been blessed to have this Parish by my side throughout. While my work will frequently take me far outside of the Lansing region, I do not plan to move and this will continue to be my Parish. I look forward to transitioning from "podium to pew" and joining your ranks for worship on Sundays under new music leadership. Thank you for your friendship and fellowship. This Parish is a truly special place. Sincerely, Matt Eldred St. Vincent de Paul In today s Gospel, Jesus challenges us by saying: You must be perfected as your heavenly Father is perfect. When we give to the poor, God indeed pours his love, peace and joy into our hearts and into our lives. COUPLE PRAYER SERIES DURING LENT Did you know the divorce rate for married couples who pray together daily is 1 in 1,105 married couples. Couple Prayer does amazing things for strengthening marriage relationships. Join Dcn. Jim and Karen Kasprzak and Dcn. Dave and Ann Zygmontowicz for the Couple Prayer Series on six consecutive Thursdays from March 2 through April 6. The sessions will begin at 6:30pm and end promptly at 8:30pm in Fr. Mac Hall at STA. 6 SMALL THINGS East Lansing Catholic Families There are no RE Classes February 19, 20 due to President s Day holiday. Next classes are February 26, 27. PARENT MEETINGS for parents who wish their children to make their first Communion were held last week. If you would like for your child to make their first Communion this May, and were unable to attend the meeting, please go to the parish website, click on Sacraments/Childrens Reconciliation and Eucharist, and at the bottom of the page there will be a blue lozenge which you can click to schedule a meeting with Annie. She's looking forward to talking to you! Have you heard of "Holy Heroes"? At you can find some great resources for Lent for your young ones. Their free resources includes a little video about each week's Gospel Reading, as well as a coloring sheet based on the week's readings and even a quiz! They also offer some nice free seasonal resources. At their companion store you can also find some great things - my favorite is a Lego Mass Kit (great first Communion gift!). CALLED. NO YOUTH GROUP (morning or evening) this week due to the Presidents Day holiday. We will be back next week! MARDI GRAS festivities will lead into the final session of our "Christian Manhood and Womanhood" studies when the evening session returns on February 26. We'll pull out the stops with great food and fun for this last session before Lent. DEADLINE for registering for the MISSION Retreat is this Monday, February 20! Please don't miss this amazing weekend. Much like Steubenville, the MISSION is a powerful faith-building experience... but it is a lot closer than Steubenville, and a lot less expensive! Held at St. Catherine's High School in Wixom, the retreat lasts from the evening of March 3 through noon on March 5. PIZZA, POP AND A PRIEST - Father Ryan will be joining us for a fun evening of "stump the priest" questions on Sunday evening, March 5. This meeting is open to ANY high school student! LCHS students are welcome to join us, as are those in the morning 6 session or those doing home study. Bring your questions - and feel free to bring a non-catholic friend! SUNDAY MORNING - On Sunday morning we spend our time taking a look at the Sunday readings - but we take nothing for granted. What do those words mean? What is the book of Sirach and why isn't it in all Bibles? Who wrote the epistles? What is an epistle anyway? Where in the Bible do we find the Commandments? How can we find out? We have great fun every Sunday morning learning new things and preparing ourselves to get more out of the Mass. LAMBING SEASON IS NEARLY UPON US! It is that time of year! Would you like to help with our annual Butter Lamb Sale? We need volunteers to make the lambs! We also create lovely chocolate lambs, crosses and more. If you volunteer we can provide the molds, directions and the butter and/or chocolate. 7 Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults This past Sunday the catechumens and candidates and their sponsors gathered to consider the topic, "Human Sexuality". Sex is more than a physical reality. One's sexuality, expressed in either masculinity or femininity, is one of God's greatest and most beautiful gifts to us. "Sexuality is a fundamental component of personality, in and through which we, as male or female, experience our relatedness to self, others, the world and even God." (The United States Catholic Bishops, Human Sexuality) The Church teaches that human sexual intercourse is an action inscribed by the Creator with a twofold meaning, that is, with both a unitive and procreative dimension. The unitive dimension expresses humankind's desire not to be alone, to love, and to be loved. The procreative dimension is built into the very biology of genital sex. Taken together, this twofold meaning of sexual intercourse finds its only valid expression in a marital union marked by commitment and fidelity while being open to new life. Chastity is a positive force for good and the essential virtue needed to live one's sexuality responsibly and appropriately, according to each person's unique state in life. "Every person, single or married, is called to be chaste, to be healthy and honest, and to respect the sexuality of self and others." (The Catholic Faith Handbook for Youth) This past Tuesday and this Sunday the inquirers and their sponsors explored the Catholic approach to the bible. They received an overview of the bible, how it was formulated over a span of 1,500 years, and the key part it plays in the life of the church. They learned the difference between a literal interpretation of the bible and an approach which takes into account the circumstances of the people to whom a particular book was first addressed and the purpose of the author. Each inquirer received a Catholic study bible which they will now take with them on their journey of faith in the RCIA process. If you have any questions about the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, or would like to discuss the possibility of joining the next group of inquirers, call Pete Ries at , ext or pries@elcatholics.org. St. Gerard EUCHRE TOURNAMENT will take place Saturday, February 25 in Fr. Weber Hall. Doors open at 5:30pm and games begin at 6:00pm. Pre-registration is $25 per person and is encouraged. Call Jeanne or Dan Beachnau for info, or jbeachnau@frontier.com. Proceeds benefit 8th grade Washington DC fund. 7 TRAINING AT ST. JOHN Lector Training in McDevitt Hall Thursday, February 23 at 6:00pm Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion in the Sanctuary Sunday, February 26 at 1:30pm Contact Denise Waytes to learn more at denise@elcatholics.org. Faith Sharing Questions on Next Sunday s Gospel We invite you to prepare for next Sunday s liturgy (February 26) by reflecting on the Gospel reading for that Sunday: Matthew 6:24 34 Jesus said to his disciples: No one can serve two masters... You cannot serve God and mammon. What about your life would cause God to rejoice in you as God s child? What about your life would God lovingly ask you to correct? Do you think you worry about earthly things more than you should? For Further Reflection... Bringing Home the Word is a monthly newsletter subscribed to by our parish offering reflections on the Sunday readings. You can either download it from elcatholics.org on the Adult Faith Formation page or we are happy to it to you monthly upon request. (Contact Al at al@elcatholics.org.)
