2 What s Going on in the Parish... & Youth Group Camp Fire! The Adventure and Adoration Group had a really great time at Itch-ke-pe park. Great Food, Fun and Fellowship! We are really excited for our next adventure. I heard something about water being involved possibly? God our father, we give you thanks and praise for fathers young and old. We pray for young fathers, newly embracing their vocation; may they find courage and perseverance to balance work, family and faith in joy and sacrifice. We pray for our own fathers around the world whose children are lost or suffering; may they know that the god of compassion walks with them in their sorrow. We pray for men who are not fathers but still mentor and guide us with fatherly love and advice. We remember fathers, grandfather, and great grandfathers who are no longer with us but who live forever in our memory and nourish us with their love. Amen We have free wifi available at password is saintmary A big THANK YOU to all of those who helped with the yard sale this year and to 2 Gospel Reflection Earlier this year I was preaching a retreat in Italy and on the Sunday we stopped off at Orvieto the home of the Eucharistic miracle. In 1263 a German priest, Peter of Prague, stopped at Bolsena while on a pilgrimage to Rome. He is described as being a pious priest, but one who found it difficult to believe that Christ was actually present in the consecrated Host. Like the people in this Sunday s Gospel he found the teaching difficult to believe. While celebrating Holy Mass he had barely spoken the words of Consecration when blood started to seep from the consecrated Host and trickle over his hands onto the altar and the corporal. At first he attempted to hide the blood, but then he interrupted the Mass and asked to be taken to the neighboring city of Orvieto, where he knew Pope Urban IV was then residing. The Pope listened to the priest s account and absolved him. He then sent emissaries for an immediate investigation. When all the facts were ascertained, he ordered the Bishop of the diocese to bring to Orvieto the Host and the linen cloth bearing the stains of blood. The Pope accepted the miracle and one year later instituted the feast in the universal church and also asked St. Thomas Aquinas to compose the liturgy for the new feast. The linen corporal bearing the spots of blood is still reverently enshrined in the Cathedral of Orvieto and we celebrated Mass at the altar. all of you who generously donated items! Our Youth Group is so ful for all of the support we receive from our Parish! Belief in the true presence of Jesus is the Most Blessed Sacrament wasn t just a challenge to those who heard Jesus preaching in thank- the synagogue of Capernaum or for Peter of Prague in It can still be a challenge to us in the modern world. How can this be, something that looks like a piece of bread is actually the living presence of the glorified Christ in heaven here before our eyes. The Real Presence, God in our midst lies at the heart of our faith journey here on earth. We believe it because Jesus himself said it was what it is, This is my body This is my blood. The mysterious and the ordinary go hand in hand. God is with us on our own personal journeys through life. Those who don t believe want proofs that will force them to believe; but this not the plan of God, who desires our free love and not our forced submission. God respects our freedom as human beings made in his image and likeness and he offers us the truth awaiting our acceptance in faith. As we kneel before the glorified Lord in the Most Blessed Sacrament this weekend, let us pray for a deepening of our faith in Jesus Real Presence and a deeper acceptance of Him in our lives. Fr. John Harris O.P.

6 We celebrate the Eucharist every week. Why do we need Corpus Christi? By Fr.Terrance Klein Every Memorial Day weekend, my good friend Lynee takes her mother Vera to visit cemeteries. They cover three counties! It being May, her husband Jim, a farmer, gets a pass. Vera s son Brian, the local sheriff, also opts out, calling it The Death Tour. I was happy to go along this year. I am amazed at the number of cemeteries in my own county that I have never seen, and I find reading the family names and looking around at the vista from each cemetery rather fascinating. Vera has an intricate and intractable system. At each stop there were prayers. Still others, only a walk-by. We were near the grave tombstone near it: But from the beginning, with its processions out the doors had another sensibility. We concentrate upon the Eucharistic the very presence of Christ in our midst. There is a right rea- A Farmer s Prayer graves that received both flowers and prayers and others, only of a very distant connection when I noticed this poem on a Looking at the encircling, cultivated land, with a thrice- steepled church standing straight west of us, I thought that the poem had found the perfect setting. Here was a man who had loved the land, had lived on the land Lord, bless the land you ve given and was now given back to the land. And here was his acknowledgment that all of this had been done in the Lord. God had given the land into his care; God me, had blessed the work of his hands; and, now, with his mortal remains beneath the land, the farmer is And may I always know himself the seed that has been planted, rising into new life. As I tend each crop and creature You re the One who helps them grow. Corpus Christi is a medieval feast, coming at a time when little was known of the ancient church. Does it really make sense to celebrate a feast of the Eucharist, when the Eucharist itself is the cause and the core of Grant me strength and wisdom our celebration every week? And if one were to choose a single day to ponder the mystery, wouldn t that be Holy Thursday? Please protect me from harm, And thank you For your gracious gift The blessing of a farm. of the church and into the countryside, Corpus Christi has elements themselves: the bread and the wine, which become soning at work here. We believe that in the Incarnation God the Son took every element of human life into himself. As the fathers of the church put it, there was no part of our humanity, save the stain of sin, that had not been made into an expression of God. And so, while at Christmas we profess that God has lowered self to become a man, at the Ascension we rejoice that our humanity has been lifted up into the Godhead. In every Eucharist, we celebrate this marriage of heaven and of earth. We are divinized, body and soul, as we consume the Bread of Angels. Catholic and Orthodox forms of worship are quite deliberately sensual, physical. We employ colors, candles, flowers, vestments, incense, water, oil, wine and bread, postures and gestures, which, taken together, suggest the sanctification of the cosmos, the lifting up of earth into heaven. And all Christians receive Communion hearing that they are receiving the body of Christ, not merely his spirit. So there is something profoundly right about walking into nature, into the fields, on this Solemnity of Corpus Christi. In doing so, we say to the land, to the streams, to the woods and animals: You, too, have been taken up into Christ. You, too, have been lifted up, which is why we must never treat you as instruments at our disposal but must reverence you tenderly, as co-heirs to the glory of Christ. A Farmer s Wife s Prayer Lord, I thank you for my husband And this land that I love. Give me strength to give him help With your guidance from above. Make me a good partner: attentive Listener, my husband s best friend. When I chose him, I chose this land A way of life on which we depend. By love we three are one, Myself, my husband and this farm. Our labors have been successful, With me at his right arm. So Lord, please keep watch over us, We need your steady hand. We need your help and guidance As together we work our farmland. God came among us as a man of flesh and blood. God remains among us in the form of wheat bread and fruit of the wine. In the mystery of the Eucharist, God claims our humanity as his own. In the same mystery, God sinks deep into the sinews of the earth, making all of nature the very tabernacle of his presence. Just to the left of the farmer s tombstone was another, also with a poem. By love we three are one,/ myself, my husband and this farm. Sounds a bit new-age for a Kansas tombstone, but it expresses a truth as timeless as the Gospel. In Jesus the Christ, God has entered our humanity and has raised flesh and blood, our physical burdens and our sensual delights, into the heights of heaven. And, in his memory, the church celebrates the meal that he left us and reverences her Eucharistic Lord, seeded now in the form of bread and wine, word and community. We do this until he comes again, to reveal an environment, nay a cosmos, transformed into his glory. 4

Today is Friday, the memorial of Your bitter agony on the Cross; because Your mercy is inconceivable, the Angels will not be surprised at this. Jesus pressed me to His Heart and said, My beloved daughter, you have come to know well the depths of My mercy. I will do what you ask, but unite yourself continually with My agonizing Heart and make reparation to My justice. Know that you have asked Me for a great thing, but I see that this was dictated by your pure love for Me; that is why I am complying with your requests (Diary, 873). My Prayer Response: Lord Jesus, may I pray with boldness and trust in You as St. Faustina did. May I hear the beautiful words that she heard from You as I make reparation to Your justice!
