1 CHURCH BULLETIN ~ AUGUST 2014 Albanian Orthodox Archdiocese in America SS Peter and Paul Albanian Orthodox Church ~ Old Bustleton Avenue ~ Philadelphia, PA ~ Church Phone: Pastor: Father Stephen Siniari ~ Phone: ~ frsiniari@gmail.com Of Course We Don't Meet Enemies In Church FATHER STEPHEN S MESSAGE TO THE FAITHFUL Our enemies frighten us. We are incapable of hearing their cries, of responding to their needs. Their aggression or domination stifles us. We flee from them - or wish that they would disappear. But in community we are called to discover that the "enemy" is a person in pain and that through the "enemy" we are being asked to become aware of our own weakness, lack of maturity and inner poverty. The message of Jesus is clear: But I say to you that hear, Love your enemies, Do good to those who hate you, Bless those who curse you, Pray for those who abuse you. To him who strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. Luke 6: Of course you don't meet enemies in Church (Carmel)*...but when all is said and done you do have your sympathies. One sister attracts you - another sister - Well, you'd go a long way round to avoid meeting her. Without knowing it, she is your persecutress. Good: then: Jesus tells me: This is the sister I've got to love, the sister I've got to pray for. Her behavior to be sure suggests that she isn't too fond of me, yes, but, "What credit is it to you if you love those who love you? Even sinners love those who love them." And loving her isn't enough: You've got to prove it. The enemy in the community reveals to us the enemy inside us. * Autobiography - Therese de Lisiex - entered an enclosed Carmelite community at age 15 - Died aged 24 ***Jean Vanier, founder of the world-famous l'arche community for the mentally handicapped and their helpers, has written a unique book, Community and Growth. She was a source of consolation and edification both for the Apostles and for all the believers. Conversing with them, She told them about miraculous events: the Annunciation, the seedless and undefiled Conception of Christ born of Her, about His early childhood, and about His earthly life. Like the Apostles, She helped plant and strengthen the Christian Church by Her presence, Her discourse and Her prayers. The reverence of the Apostles for the Most Holy Virgin was extraordinary. After the receiving of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost, the Apostles remained at Jerusalem for about ten years attending to the salvation of the Jews, and wanting moreover to see the Mother of God and hear Her holy discourse. Many of the newly-enlightened in the Faith even came from faraway lands to Jerusalem, to see and to hear the All-Pure Mother of God. PAGE 5

6 During the persecution initiated by King Herod against the young Church of Christ (Acts 12:1-3), the Most Holy Virgin and the Apostle John the Theologian withdrew to Ephesus in the year 43. The preaching of the Gospel there had fallen by lot to the Apostle John the Theologian. The Mother of God was on Cyprus with St Lazarus the Four-Days-Dead, where he was bishop. She was also on Holy Mount Athos. St Stephen of the Holy Mountain says that the Mother of God prophetically spoke of it: Let this place be my lot, given to me by my Son and my God. I will be the Patroness of this place and intercede with God for it. During the persecution initiated by King Herod against the young Church of Christ (Acts 12:1-3), the Most Holy Virgin and the Apostle John the Theologian withdrew to Ephesus in the year 43. I will be the Patroness of this place and intercede with God for it. The respect of ancient Christians for the Mother of God was so great that they preserved what they could about Her life, what they could take note of concerning Her sayings and deeds, and they even passed down to us a description of Her outward appearance. According to Tradition, based on the words of the Hieromartyrs Dionysius the Areopagite (October 3), Ignatius the God-Bearer (December 20), St Ambrose of Milan (December 7) had occasion to write in his work On Virgins concerning the Mother of God: She was a Virgin not only in body, but also in soul, humble of heart, circumspect in word, wise in mind, not overly given to speaking, a lover of reading and of work, and prudent in speech. Her rule of life was to offend no one, to intend good for everyone, to respect the aged, not envy others, avoid bragging, be healthy of mind, and to love virtue. When did She ever hurl the least insult in the face of Her parents? When was She at discord with Her kin? When did She ever puff up with pride before a modest person, or laugh at the weak, or shun the destitute? With Her there was nothing of glaring eyes, nothing of unseemly words, nor of improper conduct. She was modest in the movement of Her body, Her step was quiet, and Her voice straightforward; so that Her face was an expression of soul. She was the personification of purity. All Her days She was concerned with fasting: She slept only when necessary, and even then, when Her body was at rest, She was still alert in spirit, repeating in Her dreams what She had read, or the implementation of proposed intentions, or those planned yet anew. She was out of Her house only for church, and then only in the company of relatives. Otherwise, She seldom appeared outside Her house in the company of others, and She was Her own best overseer. Others could protect Her only in body, but She Herself guarded Her character. ***Information taken from oca.org PAGE 6

LOWER SCHOOL CLASS (AGES 5-12 ) OF SUNDAY SCHOOL - LED BY ROSE SHALOKA This year in the Lower Sunday School class (ages 5 through 12) we are covering the New Testament. We try to follow a chronological order beginning with the birth of Jesus, His early years and some of His miracles. Our younger students are taking some time off at the end of June to enjoy the summer break. We will be resuming our classes on September 14th. All children are welcome to come to Sunday School and we hope to see you there UPPER SCHOOL CLASS (AGES 12 AND ABOVE) OF SUNDAY SCHOOL - LED BY GREG SHALOKA The Upper Sunday School class has been continuing with our study of the gospel of St. John. We would like to say Congratulations and Best Wishes to our two High School graduates Kayla Schaeffer and Paul Shaloka as they continue their educational pursuits at the next level. God grant them many years Husband and Wife Prayer by Archimandrite Nicodim O Lord Jesus Christ our God, our Sweet Savior, Who taught us to pray always for each other, so that by thus fulfilling the holy law we will be made worthy of Thy mercy: Look down with compassion on our married life and keep from all perilous falls, from enemies both visible and invisible, my husband/wife whom Thou hast granted me, that we may pass our time together until the end with oneness of mind. Grant him/her health, strength, and fullness of wisdom enlightened from above, so that he/she may be able to fulfill his/her duties all the days of this life according to Thy will and commandments. Protect and keep him/her from temptations, and may he/she be able to bear and conquer those temptations that come upon him/her. Strengthen him/her in right faith, strong hope, and perfect love, so that together we may do good deeds and that we may order all our life according to Thy divine ordinances and commandments. O Greatly-Merciful Lord, hear us who humbly pray to Thee, and send Thy divine blessing in truth on our married life and on all our good deeds, for it is Thine to hear and have mercy on us, O our God, and to Thee we ascribe glory: to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, both now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen. PAGE 11

12 UPDATE FROM BETHANY ORPHANAGE in ALBANIA: Hello Everyone We apologize for being so slow with a new update I'll try not to make this too long, but I'll also try to fill you on on the happenings in Albania. Gezuar Nje Qershor We just celebrated Children's Day (1st of June). We had a small celebration, and the children really enjoyed it. They enjoyed face painting, time to play with a parachute, balloon animals, some snacks, and a small gift. Thanks to the generosity of the American Embassy, we were able to give all of the older children a new soccer ball Work Party The following day, June 2nd, we were blessed again by some people from the US Embassy, and American and Albanian military personnel FIFTY people came and did an IN- CREDIBLE amount of yard work, cleaning, and painting A small group will come and complete the painting this next week. We are so grateful for people who come to serve They did an amazing job and the grounds look beautiful Adoptions: We've had three Bethany adoptions so far this year, and we're hoping for two more this summer: one in Gjirokaster and one in Elbasan. Please continue to pray for the children who are waiting for "forever families". We have some older children and some special needs children. Surely, the Lord wants every child to be in a family. It is the hope of the Bethany team to be able to grow the adoption program and collaborate more with the Albanian Adoption Committee, so we look forward to seeing what the Lord does in this area. Group Home: It has been a challenging year in this area, with government leadership that has been difficult to work with. We continue to pray that the Lord will help us to serve Him well as we live here on the campus, that our lives will bring the presence of Christ to this place, and that we will surrender the results to Him. It is for His glory not ours, and for the lives of these precious little ones who need to be out of here and in a family Music: We have been using music sessions to promote the development and enjoyment of the children here at the group homes for two years now. The children love it They are learning to love to sing about all kinds of things, to play instruments, and to sing in worship to God. In December we added one session/week at a local preschool and later in the spring, we increased to three. It is fun to see the children interact with instruments and music, and learn small truths through what they sing. We pray that the Lord will use these seeds to grow a heart for Him in each of these young lives. We have begun to partner with an organization called Early Childhood Music this spring. ECM will be supporting us with training, supplies, and instruments. They have been fabulous, and we look forward to working together more. I (Cathy) have been working with one young Albanian woman who is studying psychology, and also loves music. She is a Catholic believer, and loves the idea of using music to promote children's development as well as plant the truth and a desire to worship in their hearts Her name is Lorena, please keep her in your prayers. She has a dream, now, of going on to receive training and become the first music therapist in her country Big dreams, but we have a big God We have been getting other requests for 'Music therapy' or music sessions: from the hospital and an outreach to chronically ill children, from a mother who wants music therapy for her child, from another preschool in Tirana. We are not music therapists, and want to be careful not to take this title, but to use these opportunities to let people here see the possibilities of using music to impact children's lives in many ways, and to bring them the truth of the gospel. 13 Bethany Orphanage FAMILY UPDATES: (We're SO PROUD of each of our children He's a senior I can't believe it Daniel is finished with his junior year He takes the SAT this week and then is free from school for the summer =) We're very proud of him. This year was more challenging than previous ones, but he worked very hard, and did very well By the way, I didn't mention this previously, but GDQ, the high school team coached by Bob, won the basketball championship again Daniel and his friend Justin led the way. GDQ has never been defeated in basketball in this little four-team competition. Neither Daniel nor Bob has played or coached on a losing team while we've been in Albania. Micah calls Bob the "John Wooden of Albania" (Apologies to the Osajima's and Caroline - staunch UCLA fans) Alicia and Jordan were just here for a short, but wonderful, 10-day visit. They came after they both graduated Summa Cum Laude It was fun to see them as a married couple. As some of you know, Jordan's parents are missionaries here also, so we had to "share" them with Don and Krystal. I told Alicia that the next time they came, she should stay with us and Jordan could stay with his parents. Her short reply: "NO". They got their fill of Albanian food; saw old friends; we went hiking on Mt. Dajti; and went to the swimming pool. Mostly we just enjoyed being together, eating meals, playing some games, talking and catching up. They weren't here long enough, but what can we do? It was so hard to see them go... Aimee is coming for the summer. She'll fly into Albania on 16 June and be here until the latter part of August. We're excited to see her and she's excited to come back She did well in her first year at Pacific Lutheran University in the pre-nursing program and has gotten involved with Inter-Varsity at PLU. While she's here, we're going to a Frontiers conference in Turkey with our good friends, the Penn's. We're excited to be able to explore Turkey and looking forward to a break, some time of fellowship, and time together as a family. Micah won't be able to join us this summer. He's doing an internship, so he'll be in Philadelphia. He and Aimee were able to surprise Alicia and make it to her graduation, and he and Aimee will be able to have some time together when she stops over on the east coast coming and going. We are grateful he has the Zimmerman family nearby when he needs a break from school Summer: This will be the first summer that we'll be here since I don't think we really remember how HOT it gets. ( I'll probably be complaining in the next Update) But, we are tentatively planning on coming home for a short visit at the end of the year for Christmas and New Year's. We haven't celebrated those holidays with our families since 2005 It will be nice to spend a summer here as the pace tends to slow down (in direct correlation to how hot it gets) We will definitely miss seeing many of you and being together with all of our children...but we continue to be grateful for the opportunity to live and work and care about people here in Albania. As we are nearing the end of our eighth year here in Albania, we reflect and praise God for each and every one of you. Some of you are believers and some of you aren't. Some of you support us financially, pray for us, and encourage us. Some of you just read this as something interesting happening on the other side of the world. But, whatever your reasons for being on this journey with us, we hope that you see the love of Jesus Christ, reflected in the work that we are doing in His name. Zoti ju bekofte (God bless you) Love, in Christ, Bob, Cathy, and Daniel PAGE 13
