All that we do must be predicated upon the antecedent salvific needs of those whom we are blessed to serve. Each person we encounter will have needs unique to their particular situation. Within the community of the Orthodox Christians, it has been our practice in following the example of our Lord Jesus Christ in consecrating the Apostles, to set aside and enable men from within the community to know each of the community members and to serve their needs which are unto salvation. The community as a whole seeks to provide that ordained person with the material and spiritual resources and support to strengthen our brothers and sisters in attaining to salvation and for the building up of the Body of Christ. In a local parish that person, set aside, or, ordained by the bishop for the purpose of serving God's people and the building up of the Body of Christ, is the priest. The scripture says the priest is responsible and will give account for our souls as well as his own. So he must be diligent in knowing and praying for each member of the community. Not every member of the parish community can or will have the same opportunities as the priest to know each person and family and their unique circumstances. And so they may not know what is required in the community as a whole to serve the diverse needs of the individuals who comprise the community: spiritual needs, sacramental participation, theological questions, helping others in discerning a monastic or priestly calling, liturgical preparation and service, parish education of children and adults, coordinating with lay leadership and various parish auxiliary groups, interacting with other Orthodox, ecumenical relations, economic and racial concerns, changing demographics, diocesan and national church needs and concerns, health issues, financial, educational, legal, criminal, community service, CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

2 CHURCH GAZETTE ~ SEPTEMBER 2014 drug and alcohol abuse, rehabs, various insurance and malpractice issues, mental health concerns, various relationships, marriages, children, gender identification issues, vocational, immigration, sexual issues, promiscuity, infidelity, celibacy, those seeking to learn about and possibly embrace the Orthodox faith, language and ethnic issues, suicide and suicidal ideation, elderly and/or infirm parents, terminal children, facing death, being available to his own family and their needs, taking time to study and pray, and show himself approved, caring for his own spiritual, financial, and physical well-being, and it seems the list of pastoral concerns becomes more complex with each passing generation. The priest must be familiar with the entire continuum of care. Who else in the parish would wish to? After many arduous years of familiarizing himself with the community as a whole and each person and family and their individual spiritual needs, after prayer and fasting, and serving the needs of God's people, the priest may determine certain things are necessary in carrying out the work God is accomplishing among His people. A good priest desires to and will try to include the brothers and sisters and the lay-leadership of the community in charting a course when he can. In other instances, those who wish to influence community mission may lack proper ecclesial experience or education, have inadequate spiritual life, or not realize that since they lack the opportunities to know each one in the community and their individual needs, it is sometimes better not to lean to our own understanding but rather trust the judgment of the bishop in ordaining the priest to make certain decisions. Also, though well-intentioned, many do not realize that worldly disciplines such as academia, science, business acumen, or organizational and management skills cannot replace a pastoral vision informed by the ongoing life of the church and may not have congruency with the vision of life and relationships that are outlined in the Bible and the holy traditions of the Church which have as their ultimate goal the salvation of souls. Still, not everyone will trust the priest or agree with the decision of the bishop to ordain a particular man. Some believe they know better. Sometimes we find that not every member of the community will agree with the priest. Some may challenge him. Some may not understand why the priest is seeking to make certain provisions, spend money, alter physical arrangements, or change long-standing local practices. Even though they may lack the overview of community needs as a whole and an intimate knowledge of individual needs within the community, some may even actively seek to thwart the efforts of the priest to serve the community needs as he sees them, based solely on their opinions. And though their opinions may be informed by a theologically narrow, self-informed vision, they sometimes even succeed in doing so, in scuttling the course for the community set by the priest. The means of disobedience are many, worldly political maneuvers, monetary machinations, liturgical sabotage, to name a few. One fact however, remains, even though they are not ordained to lead the community and though they vitiate the pastoral prerogative of the priest, the priest nonetheless remains responsible before God. A new Government Director has cut funds for the orphanages in Albania. As a result, they are in dire need of money to meet the needs of the children for medicine, food, housing, and clothing. This past winter was very difficult for them since numerous new children arrived, and many children were ill and needed hospitalization. Please donate to help with this very worthy cause. The Emperor Hadrian ( ) gave orders to cover over the ground of Golgotha and the Sepulchre of the Lord, and to build a temple of the pagan goddess Venus and a statue of Jupiter. Pagans gathered at this place and offered sacrifice to idols there. Eventually after 300 years, by Divine Providence, the great Christian sacred remains, the Sepulchre of the Lord and the Life-Creating Cross were again discovered and opened for veneration. This took place under the Emperor Constantine the Great ( ) after his victory in the year 312 over Maxentius, ruler of the Western part of the Roman empire, and over Licinius, ruler of its Eastern part. In the year 323 Constantine became the sole ruler of the vast Roman Empire. Ardently desiring to find the Cross on which our Lord Jesus Christ was crucified, St Constantine sent his mother, the pious Empress Helen (May 21), to Jerusalem, providing her with a letter to St Macarius, Patriarch of Jerusalem. Although the holy empress Helen was already in her declining years, she set about completing the task with enthusiasm. The empress gave orders to destroy the pagan temple and the statues in Jerusalem. Searching for the Life-Creating Cross, she made inquiry of Christians and Jews, but for a long time her search remained unsuccessful. Finally, they directed her to a certain elderly Hebrew by the name of Jude who stated that the Cross was buried where the temple of Venus stood. They demolished the pagan temple and, after praying, they began to excavate the ground. Soon the Tomb of the Lord was uncovered. Not far from it were three crosses, a board with the inscription ordered by Pilate, and four nails which had pierced the Lord s Body (March 6).

7 In order to discern on which of the three crosses the Savior was crucified, Patriarch Macarius alternately touched the crosses to a corpse. When the Cross of the Lord touched the dead one, he came to life. Having beheld the raising of the dead man, everyone was convinced that the Life- Creating Cross was found. Christians came in a huge throng to venerate the Holy Cross, beseeching St Macarius to elevate the Cross, so that even those far off might reverently contemplate it. Then the Patriarch and other spiritual leaders raised up the Holy Cross, and the people, saying Lord have mercy, reverently prostrated before the Venerable Wood. This solemn event occurred in the year 326. During the discovery of the Life-Creating Cross another miracle took place: a grievously sick woman, beneath the shadow of the Holy Cross, was healed instantly. The elder Jude and other Jews there believed in Christ and accepted Holy Baptism. Jude received the name Cyriacus and afterwards was consecrated Bishop of Jerusalem. During the reign of Julian the Apostate ( ) he accepted a martyr s death for Christ (see October 28). The holy empress Helen journeyed to the holy places connected with the earthly life of the Savior, building more than 80 churches, at Bethlehem the birthplace of Christ, and on the Mount of Olives where the Lord ascended to Heaven, and at Gethsemane where the Savior prayed before His sufferings and where the Mother of God was buried after her death. St Helen took part of the Life-Creating Wood and nails with her to Constantinople. The holy emperor Constantine gave orders to build at Jerusalem a majestic and spacious church in honor of the Resurrection of Christ, also including under its roof the Life-Giving Tomb of the Lord and Golgotha. The temple was constructed in about ten years. St Helen did not survive until the dedication of the temple, she died in the year 327. The church was consecrated on September 13, 335. On the following day, September 14, the festal celebration of the Exaltation of the Venerable and Life-Creating Cross was established. Another event connected to the Cross of the Lord is remembered also on this day: its return to Jerusalem from Persia after a fourteen year captivity. During the reign of the Byzantine emperor Phocas ( ) the Persian emperor Khozroes II in a war against the Greeks defeated the Greek army, plundered Jerusalem and captured both the Life-Creating Cross of the Lord and the Holy Patriarch Zachariah ( ). The Cross remained in Persia for fourteen years and only under the emperor Heraclius ( ), who with the help of God defeated Khozroes and concluded peace with his successor and son Syroes, was the Cross of the Lord returned to the Christians. With great solemnity the Life-creating Cross was transferred to Jerusalem. Emperor Heraclius in imperial crown and royal purple carried the Cross of Christ into the temple of the Resurrection. With the emperor went Patriarch Zacharios. At the gates by which they ascended Golgotha, the emperor suddenly stopped and was not able to proceed farther. The holy Patriarch explained to the emperor that an angel of the Lord was blocking his way. The emperor was told to remove his royal trappings and to walk barefoot, since He Who bore the Cross for the salvation of the world from sin had made His way to Golgotha in all humility. Then Heraclius donned plain garb, and without further hindrance, carried the Cross of Christ into the church. In a sermon on the Exaltation of the Cross, St Andrew of Crete (July 4) says: The Cross is exalted, and everything true gathers together, the Cross is exalted, and the city makes solemn, and the people celebrate the feast. ***Information taken from oca.org PAGE 7

8 CHURCH GAZETTE - SEPTEMBER 2014 RAISING TOMORROW S SAINTS The purpose of Sunday School is to teach our children how to live their Orthodox faith. By teaching them about the life of Christ, we give them the foundation to live Christian lives, to go out into the world and share their faith and do good works. We encourage our children not only to learn about our faith in the classroom, but in their homes as well. The Sunday School also does a number of charitable works. The Sunday School welcomes children as young as 5 years old and offers classes from pre-school through high school. Greg and Rose Shaloka are our dedicated teachers. Please consider enrolling your child in our Sunday School program this year - we are starting on September 14th LOWER SCHOOL CLASS (AGES 5-12 ) OF SUNDAY SCHOOL - LED BY ROSE SHALOKA Thank you to Father Dudash and Matuska Linda for giving their time and talents at the St Stephen's Vacation Sunday School that was held on July 29,30 and 31. Six of our Sunday School children attended this year. Georgia and Charlotte Reeves, Isabella Thune, Elizabeth, Lydia and Sophia Shaloka. The children participated in lessons on St. Herman of Alaska, Biblical plants in nature, a nature walk, calligraphy, crafts, visiting and giving gifts to nearby nursing home residents as well as making 140 food bags to be handed out to the homeless UPPER SCHOOL CLASS (AGES 12 AND ABOVE) OF SUNDAY SCHOOL - LED BY GREG SHALOKA The Upper Sunday School class has been continuing with our study of the gospel of St. John. We would like to say Congratulations and Best Wishes to our two High School graduates Kayla Schaeffer and Paul Shaloka as they continue their educational pursuits at the next level. God grant them many years CHILD S PRAYERS BEFORE GOING TO SCHOOL O Lord my God, help me to pay attention in class today and learn what I need to learn. Amen. 9 WHAT: CLEAN-UP AND FIX-UP DAY WHEN: SATURDAY, September 13TH starting at 9:00 AM WHERE: SS Peter & Paul Albanian Orthodox Church at 9230 Old Bustleton Ave., Phila WHY: We have a huge honor of hosting the Annual Archdiocesan Assembly this year. As of right now our Church building is not ready. MAJOR HOUSECLEANING NEEDS TO GET DONE IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS: 1. Upstairs Church Hall - floors, windows, windowsills cleaned, tables prepared, toys organized, library organized, etc. 2. Kitchen - wiped down ceiling to floors, organized, and drawers labeled. 3. Refrigerator - cleaned out, wiped down with lukewarm water, water filter changed. 4. Bathrooms - floors, toilets, sinks, window, windowsill, etc. - disinfected and cleaned. 5. Stairs leading the the Church hall - wiped down and vacuumed, fountain needs to be repaired and needs a good disinfecting cleaning. 6. Lift - wiped down. 7. Church Store - cleaned, organized, possible addition of shelves. 8. Doors leading into the Church - wiped down. 9. Church - floors, windows, window curtains either laundered or washed, lights - light bulbs changed, crystals cleaned, brass shined, sand added, candle holders tended to. 10. Altar and Iconostasis - Please obtain Father s Blessing and specifics first. 11. Robes - best of robes selected, dry cleaned, tears fixed when possible and prepared to be used at the time of Hierarchal Divine Liturgy. 12. Church Choir to be moved to the back and Throne to be moved into the current place of the Church Choir. 13. Audio Speaker system checked and fixed throughout the Church. 14. Basement - we are in need of a good Dehumidifier system to start drying out our Basement. It will be in the best interest of every one of us to get our valuable basement space to be healthy and habitable. " 15. Upstairs Hall ceiling must be checked for safety purposes. 16. Various small repairs need to get completed throughout the Church building. We need those of you with various repair skills to come and help with these repairs. 17. Various outside projects - grass, paint, clean, pull weeds out, etc. There are just a few tasks that are coming to forefront. As you can see we need EVERYONE s help to get this done. We will provide pizza, tools and materials (unless yours are better) and we ask you to donate a little time and elbow grease. Helping your Church during this time is a great opportunity to get involved with your Church Family while accomplishing a needed task.
