Crucifixion was one of the most awful forms of punishment, designed not only to cause the death of a criminal, but also to terrorize those who saw what happened to law-breakers. Crucifixions were carried out in public places, where passersby could see the price paid by those found guilty and take to heart the message: This will be YOUR fate if you transgress. We were there when our Lord was put to death on a tree, because it was our sins, our transgressions that He took upon himself. The crucifixion completed Jesus selfsacrifice; his willingness to die for us has freed us from bondage to sin. Were you there when they crucified my Lord? Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother s sister, Mary, the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala. (John 19:25) The pain his mother and his dearest friends had to endure is unimaginable. To lose a child or a dear friend to death is painful to see him die in such an unjust and brutal manner boggles the mind. Something some glimmer of hope sustained these brave women. They were raised with the knowledge that throughout the history of the Jewish people, God had intervened to save them. Maybe that is what allowed them to go on in the face of such loss, such agony. Oh, oh, oh, oh! Sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble! Our Lenten season invites us to stand at the foot of the cross, understanding the reality of our own sins, but also understanding that by His life, death, and resurrection, Jesus has taken our guilt on Himself and set us free. This is why the season of Lent, a season of penitence, is also a season of hope. As the Hebrew people were freed from bondage in Egypt by the intervention of God, we are freed by His sacrifice. As we undertake our Lenten disciplines, we do so with the knowledge that It is finished, that Jesus has already freed us from sin, and that we are called to live the new life of the children of God. 720 Telfair Street PO Box 2446 Augusta, Georgia Were you there when they crucified my Lord? Ashes begin our Lenten season, and the Easter Triduum brings it to a glorious close. Throughout this season we ask God to help us acknowledge the sin that still separates us from Him and from others, and that he reveal to us more deeply the mercy He has shown that remakes our hearts. This mercy is given so that we can live lives that reflect the hope of the children of God. Here and now we build up God s kingdom on earth so that, trusting in God s mercy, we will be granted a place at the heavenly banquet table in the life to come.

3 Volume II, Issue III Maura Jabaley, Parish Council President SCHOOL NEWS Page 3 Q AND U GET MARRIED By: Stephanie Hill On Friday, February 11, 2011, the letters Q and U were united in marriage. The ceremony was officiated by the Principal Mr. Jonathan Pike. The two letters were married in front of grades Pre-K through 2 nd along with several teachers and the administrative team at the school. Following the ceremony, all those in attendance were treated to a nice reception. The wedding was planned primarily by the Pre-K 4 teachers, Mrs. Lyn Carter and Mrs. Carmen Rentas, with the assistance of Mrs. Tackney, a parent of a four year old student. Mrs. Tackney made most of the food for the reception. A good time was held by all. MARDI GRAS PARTY! Tickets available at the Church Office. Inviting children who are in Pre K through 8th grade to join the Youth Easter Choir. Practice will be on Wednesday evening from 5:30 p.m. - 6:15 p.m. in the St. Francis Choir Suite on the second floor just before our Potluck Supper Program which begins at 6:15 p.m. For your convenience and everyone's enjoyment, please join us for dinner and bring your favorite dish. Our first rehearsal will be on Wednesday, March 2. If you are interested, call the church office, or Rebecca Quinn Shelt, rqshelt@gmail.com or just meet us at St. Francis Hall on March 2. Don't forget to carpool! FAITH FORMATION ANNUAL LENTEN FAIR This year our fair will include a reenactment of The Last Supper! Other items will be available to give you weekly activities to do with your family during Lent to help prepare all to remember the death and glorious resurrection of our Lord. There will be an attendance sheet for the Faith Formation families on the 2 nd floor of St. Patrick on Sunday, March 6 from 9:15 to 10:15. All are welcome! jdyc 2011 Open to all 6th-8th Graders Yes! 5 Volume II, Issue III Page 5 STEWARDSHIP REPORT APPRECIATION/INSPIRATION/PARTICIPATION On January 30 after the 12:30pm Mass we came together as a parish in appreciation for all you do to make Holy Trinity a viable parish. We had nearly 200 parishioners come together and share a fabulous buffet by Charles Duchscher and Jon Posey. The weekend of January 29/30 Deacon Glenn Harmon preached at all the Masses to kick off our parish mission. Deacon Harmon and his wife Linda spoke on Monday, January 30 through Thursday, February 3. Their talk of true life experiences regarding God s love and forgiveness truly inspired all that attended. Many people came over after each Mass and met with ministry/committee members and signed up to be active participants in the parish. It is not too late to turn in your commitment cards.
