33 APPENDIX I ARRANGER S NOTES The origins this setting date December 17, It was started as a possibe iturgy be used at Hoy Transfiguration Church in Livonia, Michigan. My origina idea was use Ukrainian chant Gaician tradition. However, I decided base it on Russian Obikhod, which was more famiiar those Orthodox Church in America (especiay those who come out origina Russian Orthodox Greek Cathoic Church America). I ok my basic format from iturgy books for congregationa singing simiar ones used by CarpathoRusin Churches both Orthodox EasternRite Cathoic jurisdictions. The first text used was an adaptation 1967 transation Divine Liturgy approved by Great Counci Bishops, Russian Orthodox Greek Cathoic Church America. This was used in first draft, which I competed August 1, Soon after, I received a text approved by Bishop Job Chicago. I incorporated that text in this setting. The foowing norms have been used in this setting: For each part iturgy that is proper congregation, re is ony one setting. A parts that 1967 transation formery abeed Choir are congregation s part. I ok most music from Obikhod Notnago Penia, Sputnik Psamschika, ordinary Russian chant. I used copies Obikhod Notnago Penia, Sputnik Psamschika referred aso a musica setting in Engish Divine Liturgy Ocechoes by rassaphormonk Laurence. I beieve this setting was set text used by Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia in The creed uses a variation on Kievan akathist meody. I aso referred 1907 Uzhorod Prospinije. Generay, I chose simper meodies avaiabe me. I have seected a combination Kievan, Znamenny common chant. Throughout Liturgy, I repeat same meodies for Lord, have mercy, To You, O Lord, Amen, To/With your Spirit as much as possibe. Music for ordinary Sunday weekday usage resurrectiona nes are found in Divine Liturgy Companion Book. I harmonized music according foowing method. The meody specified by Obikhod is a ine. I harmonized soprano a in thirds. The bass generay imitates a an octave ower. I arranged tenor according meaning Latin term. Tenor comes from verb tenire, which means hod. Thus tenor is a Latin noun meaning a hed course. As such, tenor has most constant notes, providing a kind cantus firmus. A harmonies are generay parae. This music is not poyphony; rar, it is parae harmonized chant. This setting is intended for congregationa usage. Therefore, I have put priest deacon parts in a smaer, itaic font. A music is in key G. One can sing it in any key. G is easy write in is in basic range most peope. The assumption in this stye is that G can be assigned any note. G is simpy root note. The root note shoud be what priest or deacon is singing. Many priests deacons generay sing a root note that is between C F beow midde C. This music wi work if sung starting reative se notes. I transcribed arranged music in Music Time Deuxe for Windows. I n converted text music in PDF format. I caim no particuar right this music. I have attempted not dupicate ors works or use or arranger s music without permission. I am not sure how successfuy I have done this. I did occasionay 33
