Liturgy of the Word First Reading ~ Kings 4:42-44 Penitential Act All: I confess to almighty God, and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do, through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault; therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God. Kyrie Priest: Lor d, have mer cy. All: Lor d, have mer cy. Priest: Chr ist, have mer cy. All: Chr ist, have mer cy. Priest: Lor d, have mer cy. All: Lor d, have mer cy. A reading from the second Book of King A man came from Baal-shalishah bringing to Elisha, the man of God, twenty barley loaves made from the firstfruits, and fresh grain in the ear. Elisha said, "Give it to the people to eat." But his servant objected, "How can I set this before a hundred people?" Elisha insisted, "Give it to the people to eat." "For thus says the LORD, 'They shall eat and there shall be some left over.'" And when they had eaten, there was some left over, as the LORD had said. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God
RESPONSORIAL PSALM ~ 145:10-11,15-16,17-18 Let all your works give you thanks, O LORD, and let your faithful ones bless you. Let them discourse of the glory of your kingdom and speak of your might. The eyes of all look hopefully to you, and you give them their food in due season; you open your hand and satisfy the desire of every living thing. The LORD is just in all his ways and holy in all his works. The LORD is near to all who call upon him, to all who call upon him in truth. SECOND READING ~ Ephesians 4:1-6 A reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Ephesians Brothers and sisters: I, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to live in a manner worthy of the call you have received, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another through love, striving to preserve the unity of the spirit through the bond of peace: one body and one Spirit, as you were also called to the one hope of your call; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God GOSPEL ACLAMATION Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. A great prophet has risen in our midst. God has visited his people. R: Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. GOSPEL~ JOHN 6:1-15 PRIEST: The Lord be with you. A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John: Glory to you, O Lord Jesus went across the Sea of Galilee. A large crowd followed him, because they saw the signs he was performing on the sick. Jesus went up on the mountain, and there he sat down with his disciples. The Jewish feast of Passover was near. When Jesus raised his eyes and saw that a large crowd was coming to him, he said to Philip, "Where can we buy enough food for them to eat?" He said this to test him, because he himself knew what he was going to do. Philip answered him, "Two hundred days' wages worth of food would not be enough for each of them to have a little." One of his disciples, Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, said to him, "There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish; but what good are these for so many?" Jesus said, "Have the people recline." Now there was a great deal of grass in that place. So the men reclined, about five thousand in number. Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed them to those who were reclining, and also as much of the fish as they wanted. When they had had their fill, he said to his disciples, "Gather the fragments left over, so that nothing will be wasted." So they collected them, and filled twelve wicker baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves that had been more than they could eat. When the people saw the sign he had done, they said, "This is truly the Prophet, the one who is to come into the world." Since Jesus knew that they were going to come and carry him off to make him king, he withdrew again to the mountain alone. Priest: The Gospel of the Lord All: Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ. 2
Profession of Faith I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, (At the words that, up to and including and became man all bow.) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. Presentation of the Gifts Priest: Pray, brothers and sisters, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God, the almighty Father. All: May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands, for the praise and glory of his name, for our good, and the good of all his holy Church. Acclamations during the Eucharistic Prayer Preface Dialogue: Priest: The Lord be with you. Priest: Lift up your hearts. All: We lift them up to the Lord. Priest: Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God. All: It is right and just. Priest: Through him, with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours, almighty Father, for ever and ever. All: Amen. COMMUNION RITE Lord s Prayer All: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Priest: Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil, All: For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours, now and forever. Sign of Peace Priest: The Peace of the Lord be with you always. Breaking of the Bread All: Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world: have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world: have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world: grant us peace. Preparation for Communion (All Kneeling) Priest: Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb. All: Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed. CONCLUDING RITE Priest: The Lord be with you. Priest: May almighty God bless you, the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. All: Amen. Priest: Go in peace. All: Thanks be to God! Great Amen 3
Making THE Priority THE Priority: Beginning with the Sign of the Cross We begin every Mass with the priest saying, In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Our communal prayer commences with this simple act. We start the Mass with an invocation of the Triune God inviting him to bless and assist us in this holy prayer. The Early Church understood quite well the power in this act of marking oneself with the Sign of the Cross. Tertullian (c. AD ) describes how extensive this practice was in his day: In all our travels and movements, in all our coming in and going out, in putting on our shoes, at the bath, at the table in lighting our candles, in lying down, in sitting down, whatever employment occupies us, we mark our foreheads with the Sign of the Cross (De Corona 30). Still other Early Fathers of the Church saw the Sign of the Cross as a powerful weapon against evil. Read how St. John Chrysostom (AD ) exhorts the people of God: Never leave your house without making the Sign of the Cross. It will be to you a staff, a weapon, an impregnable fortress. Neither man nor demon will dare to attack you, seeing you covered with such powerful armor. Let this sign teach you that you are a soldier, ready to combat against the demons, and ready to fight for the crown of justice. Are you ignorant of what the cross has done? It has vanquished death, destroyed sin, emptied hell, dethroned Satan, and restored the universe. Would you then doubt its power? (Instruction to Catechumens, 2, 5). From time to time we need to be reminded of the powerful prayer we are entering into every time we come to Mass. It begins right at the very first words that are uttered. God has a storehouse of treasures for us to receive. Let us conscientiously prepare our hearts as we begin every Mass with the Sign of the Cross to be properly receptive of God s great gifts. Fr. P. Gregg Buena Nueva 4

Sacred Music & Liturgy Sacred Music & Liturgy Archdiocesan Liturgical Handbook The 25th Annual St. Vincent de Paul/Jim Altenhofen Memorial Golf Tournament Our Father During the Our Father, the Roman Missal instructs the priest to extend his hands assuming the Orans posture (GIRM 152). This posture is prescribed only for the priest and although it has been adopted by the faithful in some countries after the approval of the Holy See, in the United States it is still a posture assumed only by the priest The faithful holding hands during the Our Father is another posture not envisioned or prescribed by the Roman Missal. While this has been adopted within families with small children it should not be considered a normal posture of the Sacred Liturgy. Indeed some may feel uncomfortable if this posture is imposed upon them. L iturgical Singing in General The Christian faithful who gather together as one to await the Lord s coming are instructed by the Apostle Paul to sing together psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. Singing is the sign of the heart s joy. Thus St. Augustine says rightly, Singing is for one who loves. There is also the ancient proverb: Whoever sings well prays twice. (St. Augustine, Sermon 336, 1; Col 3: 16; Acts 2: 46; cf. GIRM 39.) Great importance should therefore be attached to the use of singing in the celebration of the Mass, with due consideration for the culture of the people and abilities of each liturgical assembly. Although it is not always necessary (e.g., in weekday Masses) to sing all the texts that are of themselves meant to be sung, every care should be taken that singing by the ministers and the people is not absent in celebrations that occur on Sundays and on holy days of obligation. In the choosing of the parts actually to be sung, however, preference should be given to those that are of greater importance and especially to those to be sung by the priest or the deacon or the lector, with the people responding, or by the priest and people together. (GIRM 40; MS 7, 16; cf. STTL ) will be held on Friday, August 17th, 2018 at Glendoveer Golf Course, NE Glisan St. Portland, OR. Pr oceeds will go toward the Portland Council s Emergency Services Program helping the needy with rent and/or utility assistance, and food boxes. Entry fee of $100 includes 18 holes of golf with cart, box lunch, BBQ dinner, prizes and more. Shotgun start at 12:30. Have fun and help others! Registration and sponsor forms are on our Website at For more information, contact Brian Ferschweiler at brian.f@svdpportland.org or th Sunday in Ordinary Time There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish; but what good are these for so many? (John 6:9) The miracle of the Loaves and Fishes is the only miracle which is recorded six times in the Gospel. It carries two important messages. First, no matter how little we have, we always have enough to share. Second, Christ can take our humble gifts and do great things with them if we are just willing to let Him. No gift is too small or insignificant!
