2 Welcome to Saint John s Episcopal Church in Gloucester, Massachusetts To participate fully with us, you need this worship book, and the blue Hymnal 1982 in the racks or Wonder, Love and Praise at the pew ends. Be you a regular worshiper, first-timer, or occasional visitor, we hope you will enjoy our fellowship! St John s worship, Sunday Adult Forums, and other programs are always open to everyone. Come and check us out! Children are always welcome at worship in St. John s Church! First time in our Church? We are delighted that you are here! For some visitors our customs are very familiar, for others they are completely new. If you are among the latter group, RELAX, there is nothing that you can do by accident that will cause offense! Ask an usher, watch your neighbors, go with the flow. Introduce yourself to our Rector and sign our guest book after the service. Restrooms: There are three: one on each level at the far end of the building from our worship space. Exit the door opposite the organ and follow the signs. Children in Church: Children of all ages are welcome in church. We want children and parents to enjoy church and we support you in doing what you need to do toward that goal. It's OK for children to sound like children; we won't be offended. Please use the play area at the front of the pews on the right, or the Thompson Room, at any time, no matter what part of the service is going on, if they will help you or your child(ren). The Thompson Room has a table, chairs, couches, carpeted space, and a PA system that will let you hear what is going on in church. Nursing mothers may breastfeed there or in church. Your child s comfort, safety, and well-being are your proper concern, and we support you in fulfilling that obligation. Access Needs: If you need help at the step leading up to the altar or would find it easier to receive Holy Communion in your pew, please speak to an usher. Hearing Assistance devices are also available. If you would like to try one out, please speak to an usher. MUSIC TODAY: Palm Sunday has many opportunities for music and we open with the Triumphant Entrance of Jesus from the musical Jesus Christ Superstar. Please join in singing lustily with the choir in the crowd parts. The choir is offering a new anthem by Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo ( Yay-lo ) Ubi caritas. Gjeilo studied at Julliard in New York and makes his home in Los Angeles. The Ubi caritas is a hymn to the love that Jesus commands us in his final hours. It is a moving work using fresh harmonic language to point this familiar text. During Communion we ll sing a hymn that is in the Christmas section of the Hymnal with a tune by Ana Hernández that we sang with her several years ago. The moving text by poet Richard Wilbur recounts the birth narrative and then segues into the events of Palm Sunday and his passion and death. A sort of refrain in the middle of the poem and every stone shall cry quotes Jesus reply to the Pharisees who ask him to stop the disciples I tell you, if these were silent, the stones would shout out. Luke 19:40 2
3 Sung Eucharist Please silence pagers and cell phones Weather permitting we will begin outside. As the actors engage us in the Palm Sunday re-enactment we encourage the congregation to join in with the waving of palm branches, and shouting when invited: Hosanna Hosanna to the Son of David Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord Please join in the singing of the Hosanna (adapted from Andrew Lloyd Weber s Jesus Christ Superstar) as Jesus (played by Tristan) enters on our crafted colt. The processional leaders and followers (played by our younger members) will join with the chorus and congregation in singing the Hosanna and dancing with the palms. It is a celebration of Jesus humble entry with a few words of expositional narrative and a hint of the dangers that ensue in Jerusalem. Crowd: Caiaphas: Crowd: Jesus: Crowd: Jesus: Crowd: Celebrant People Celebrant People Hosanna, Hey-sanna, Sanna, Sanna, Hosanna, Hey-sanna, Hosanna. Hey Jeshua won t you smile at me? Sanna Hosanna, Hey Son of Man. Tell the rabble to be quiet we anticipate a riot. This common rowd is much too loud. Tell the mob who sing your song that they are fools and they are wrong. They are a curse, they should disperse. Hosanna, Hey-sanna, Sanna, Sanna, Hosanna, Hey-sanna, Hosanna. Hey Jeshua you re alright by me, Sanna Hosanna, Hey Son of Man. Why waste your breath moaning at the crowd? Nothing can be done to stop the shouting. If every tongue was still the noise would still continue. The rocks and stones themselves would start to sing! Hosanna, Hey-sanna, Sanna, Sanna, Hosanna, Hey-sanna, Hosanna. Hey Jeshua won t you fight for me? Sanna Hosanna, Hey Son of Man. Sing me your song but not from me alone. Sing out for yourselves for you are blessed. There is not one of you who cannot win the kingdom; the slow, the suffering, the quick, the dead! Hosanna, Hey-sanna, Sanna, Sanna, Hosanna, Hey-sanna, Hosanna. Hey Jeshua won t you die for me? Sanna Hosanna, Hey Son of Man. Bless the Lord who forgives all our sins. His mercy endures for ever. All are welcome and encouraged to come forward during the distribution of Holy Communion. To receive communion, stand or kneel at the rail, stand against the plaster wall inside the rail, or notify an usher that you need to have communion brought to you at your seat. After you receive communion at (or inside) the rail, please remain in place until the chalicist says Go in peace. The response after receiving each kind (bread and wine) is Amen, or you may remain silent. If you wish to receive a blessing instead of communion, please cross your arms over your chest before the Bread comes by. Gluten-free wafers are available; simply ask the person distributing the Bread. We drink the wine from the Common Cup. We do not practice intinction, that is, dipping bread in wine. If you do not wish to drink from the chalice, please cross your arms over your chest so the chalicist knows this. Receiving the Sacrament in either kind alone constitutes a full and valid Communion. Saint John's Church is committed to achieving the full inclusion of all people in Christ's Body, the Church. Please feel free to ask the rector if you have any questions. Please join in singing the communion hymns overleaf: 6

CELEBRATING GRACE CENTER During this past Sunday's Adult Forum, led by Bret, participants shared a focus on the word celebrate, as in celebrating our spiritual gifts as individuals and as the community of St. John's Church. Grace Center has recently been added to our prayer list with an invitation to celebrate what has been happening there as well as to pray for its future. Over 765 guests have been served since our doors opened in December 2011, and daily visits number over 50 at the three sites, where loving hospitality is offered along with breakfast and lunch. Candy Connelly, as St. John's Mission Hub representative to that diocesan initiative, will soon be sharing facts about work being done at Grace Center and visions for its future. Mission Hub supports Grace Center, using monies from TogetherNow to which St. John's donated so generously two or three years ago. Some of these facts can be found in Grace Center Inc.'s 2015 annual report, copies of which are currently being distributed in the church. A few things to celebrate, besides the importance of our support of the TogetherNow campaign, happened recently at Grace Center: The welcoming arms of staff and volunteers as they rejoiced with a guest who announced with a big smile on his face that he'd been sober for four months. The joy on the face and in the voice of a guest who is out of the Action Shelter and into her own apartment. The grace-filled perseverance of Christine Bobek patiently dealing with bureaucracy on behalf of a disabled guest, who needs to move from the Shelter to more appropriate housing. St. John's is truly blessed to be a part of the diocese, Mission Hub, and the Grace Center program. Let us raise our hearts in prayers of celebration. respectfully submitted, Cecily Merrell April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. There will be a candlelight vigil walk on April 29 at 7:45 PM leaving from the steps of City Hall and processing to the front of the Legion Hall. For additional information, please contact Carol Secrest. CRAFTERS: If you are interested in crafting items for next year s fair, learning a new craft, or just enjoying companionable fellowship, please join us every other Tuesday from 9-11 in the Parish Hall.
